Booze you leave behind.

Maybe like you I've kind of wondered what the hell happened to the beer or three or the bottle that I've had to leave behind in Vegas, well today I asked the question of our housekeeper and she answered it frankly.

** This is CET policy as per our housekeeper.**

I ask "what happens to the left over booze?"

She told me it is CET policy that housekeeping staff turn in all unopened alcohol to the house. It is then distributed back to wherever they can use it. Bottles back to room service or well drinks, Beer, if it's the same as room service then it goes back to room service. Same with wine etc.

I asked if they got to hold some back for a X-Mas party or something and she said no.

I was just a little surprised. I thought that maybe if they couldn't keep it it would go down the drain but WTF it get's resold?

1st of all I don't have any desire to consume any alcohol that's been "recycled"

2nd is that IMHO it's a pretty crooked thing to do.

All this being said I am consuming as much as I can tonight and when we wake up in the AM.........the rest is going down the sink

When I told the housekeeper that I would pour it out I got a double thumbs up.

This is what I was told and It's believable to me.

Now go and ask YOUR housekeeper in Vegas and let's find out if this is a reality.

In all seriousness though, we have a friend who live in Vegas (and a board member) who stores it for us until the next get together or anyone who may have driven there (looking at you Sonya!) gets to take a shit load home with them.

I think one time, the experiment was made of putting some in a cheap roll around bag and left at the hotel bell desk until the next trip. Not surprisingly, it wasn't there 6 months later.

Alcohol is a terrible thing to waste

 

I allmost cant believe that. Here in the netherlands thats pretty much against the law. There was a beer manufacturer trading cold beers for brought ones on a festival, but they were not allowed to just cool them and resell/trade.

 

You'd think they'd be worried that the bottles might have been tampered with or fakes as they've not idea where you've bought it from.

 

Thats all just a load of crap.

They either:
a) Throw it out.
b) Throw it out, but give staff the option to take sealed bottles home if they want.


The reason its all just BS:

A multi billion dollar company likes CET isn't going to worry about saving a few bucks a year by pouring alcohol found left in a room in to bottles in the bar.

And the important part is there: "found left in a room"
Some random bottle found left in a room isn't necessarily going to have whats on the label in it... and what would keep somebody from putting something like a poison in it? Even if the bottle appeared sealed it could still have been tampered with.

The risk would just be too great for the return that the casino would do that... and thats the same reason why they don't get saved for Christmas parties or doled out to the staff as presents: a big company like CET would just host a Christmas party for their staff and buy them the alcohol because they can write it off as a business expense.


People say this is what happens or thats what they would do (recycle the alcohol or give it to staff) because some people are inherently cheap and thats what they would do so they assume everybody else does it.

I re read what I posted and I guess I wasn't very clear, aw hell am I clear? I dunno but I am sitting here in Vegas trying to down the "leftovers" before I have to fly home tomorrow.

Anyway when I talked to the housekeeper it was in reference to unopened alcohol. Now I don't know what the hell comes with room service alcohol but I would imagine it would be easier for a property to ummmmmm "recycle" a unopened bottle of Grey Goose than a can of Budweiser.

I don't know if the housekeeper was full of it or not but in a small way it kind of makes sense or not.

Like you say and my GF and I discussed, leftovers could be tampered with and it's very nonsensical (is that even a word?)

To do something like that as a corporation there would be a huge liability but maybe just maybe there might just a manager or other that would promote this kind of thing to promote his or her bottom line.

Like I said, just reporting what I was told but there does seem to be some sort of truth in it.

 

Agreed, as cheap as CET is, there is almost zero chance they actually resell "found" bottles in the rooms. Housekeeping may be required to turn in the bottles by policy, but that does not mean they are being resold as new.

 

While I agree open bottles would never be reused, I can see an unopened (seal not broken) bottle of liquor put back into their inventory.

When it comes to CET and their looming debt, nothing their bean counters come up with would surprise me. After all, weren't they recently promoting a bake sale for Pete's sake?

 

Depends on the alcohol beverage laws also.

Here,bars have to buy stock from licensed vendors,they cant just run down to Costco Liquors or somewhere thats having a sale. I cant picture a hotel risking penalties over a few bottles if it's against the Alcohol Bev. Laws.

 

I had 5 bottles of beer left last year at the Mirage. I was just going to leave it in the room but my husband put a sign on it for free beer and chest and stuck it in the hallway. It was gone before we checked out that morning.

 

Sarah...that is the way to do it. If I have left over water, booze, soda unopened I give it to someone in the hall.

 

no i think they throw them away. a maid let me take beers of her cart a couple weeks ago. she had a few miller light cans on her cart when she was cleaning out a room and i saw them and asked her if she was tossing them away. she asked me if they were mine i said no but im happy to drink them

then she said i can take them.

 

company policies and company realities can be two different things.

My company has lots of policies that i dont follow. Some I go out of my way not to follow just to be a jerk.

 

Not in Vegas, but I left my hotel room and realized I forgot a few beers in the frige, I returned only to find them gone. The maid saw me come back and came running down the hall and gave them back to me. Rule #1 is there should be no wasted alcohol, but sometimes "enough is sufficient" as Mom would say. I believe that the maids stash unopened booze for themselves, a minor perk for a thankless job.

 

This would be in violation of so many NV state laws related to public health, state liquor taxes, licensed sellers, etc.

No idea what really happens.

But, as to those laws - most of them talk about where they can "purchase" it. That left over is no longer being "purchased".

Just a thought, and I surely do not encourage any long thread about what the law says.

 

I can't imagine a hotel recycling anything found in a room, but I can imagine Hooters recycling uneaten wings.

 

The problem here is:
- Sealed bottles can still be tampered with.
- Some bottles you can open without breaking the seal and then put the top back on and it'll still appear sealed.
- Some bottles you would only need to crack the airtight seal, not even open the bottle, and can than just hold under a liquid to contaminate.

If these were all small mom and pop operations then its possible some might do something like stocking their bar with leftover alcohol, but with big corporations doing something like this wouldn't have a positive impact on the bottom line, only chance after chance of a negative impact.

 

Yesterday, I took 2 remaining beers from my mini-fridge and gave them to a couple of homeless bums on Fremont Street.
