I have earned enough MyVegas points for two midweek nights (1/1 and 1/2) at the Excalibur hotel. What sort of room should I expect at the Excalibur from MyVegas? Are they comfortable? I am not expecting much on Free, but just want a place to sleep for two nights and decent places to eat for about four or five meals.

Excalibur seems to get a bad time on this board (and others) but I'm not sure why. We stayed there once and thought it was great. The rooms were a good size, clean and comfortable.

The whole castle theme may be a little dated but other than that, it's just fine.

I've stayed at the Excalibur for free a couple times thanks to MyVegas-- I'm the sort of guy that just uses my room as a place to store my stuff and maybe sleep a bit, so I didn't have any expectations. That said, it was fine. Once I got a renovated room, and it was actually pretty nice. (Not "Aria" nice, but, you know, "Harrah's" nice.) The unrenovated rooms look pretty dated and ratty, but they were acceptable. No mold in the shower or dead hookers in the closet or anything like that.

Food offerings are fine (Buca Di Beppo at the top end and a food court at the bottom), although a lot of places close around 11 because it's considered the 'family hotel' in the MGM lineup. Keep that in mind, because otherwise you may end up on a 2AM drunken trek to the Luxor for something to eat.

If your room is in Tower 1 when you check in they should offer to upgrade you to Tower 2 for a small nightly charge ($10 I think it still is) and thats worth taking.

Tower 2 is the upgraded rooms with the widescreen TVs, look nicer and have pillowtop mattresses.

Because of where they are, adjoined to Luxor with Tropicana, NYNY and MGM Grand all just across the street, Excalibur doesn't have that many dining choices within their property (though they have a large food court), but lots of choices are very close.

The rooms comped via MyVegas are usually the cheapest rooms. The details for the comp on their site should tell you what type. For the Ex, it just says tower room but I'm sure you can ask when you call up to redeem it. It also says upgrades are available at additional cost.

I've never stayed at the Ex., but free is free and they waive the resort fees. At least they waived them when I redeemed for The Mirage and Aria. Plus, like someone else said, all you need is a bed and a shower. Have fun!

Because the place stinks, as in, it smells.

Spend a few hours in the casino, put your clothes in a bag, then take a whiff a day later after your olfactory senses have returned to normal. It is a combination of smoke and carpet cleaning solution, but might not be recognizable to a smoker, though. Beds are hard as rocks.

+1 on Buca diBeppo, but skip the carafe of Sangria, its mostly ice in the carafe.

Just got back from a "free" EX 2 night stay. It's not a place I'd ever want to pay for, but it's cleanish. They never dust the rooms from what we've seen. I hate the beds and decor for both towers. Definitely try for Tower 2 though it's not much better than 1. I gotta admit, the whole time I was at the EX I was wishing I was at the Aria again.

If you travel with a kid it's ok as the fun dungeon is just downstairs and upstairs is the food court for cheap fast food.

Oh yes the SMELL is not nice. When we got home I opened our suitcase and got a face full of the smell again. Blah!

Well you guys have got me really curious now. I sure never noticed any smell. I'm staying at MGM for a night next month and will have to wander over for a whiff!

Yea it's not THAT bad. I'd certainly stay there for free. The property itself is good, and they've been making improvements, but the rooms are severely outdated.

Just make sure it's worth it... I mean rooms there area so cheap. I'd just pay the $21 a night ahah. Use the points for buffets or something, those are $30 each lol

I stayed at Excalibur for 2 nights last week. I usually stay at Caesar's properties but I decided to try something different. I found a rate of $33 a night but I was weary because of the negative reviews i had read. I was pleasantly surprised. Check in was fast at 1pm, the room did not have a view but it had comfortable beds and it was very clean.
I did not notice any "funky" smell in the casino and I spent about 8 hours there each day. Cocktail service was excellent as I never waited for a drink and they always asked if I wanted a bottle of water with my drink.
I did not eat at any of the restaurants so I can't comment on the food. I would stay there again as long it was a time of the year when kids are back in school

Yea, I went to see Thunder a few months ago, and the place was looking a lot better, the casino looked a little nicer (they've redone almost the whole second floor), and yea no weird smell. They've done some updates, they have a new huge food court, and several newer restaurants. Also every time I've stayed there it's been really clean. Even though the rooms are old and ugly it didn't feel gross to me. For me, Excalibur is the "oh crap it's expensive when I need to go, this is an emergency" stay.

But with that being said, if you can spring for Luxor, I'd do that. Luxor is my go-to bargain property. It's usually not much more than Excalibur.

I like the contemporary rooms at Excalibur. Although myvegas rooms used to be these upgraded rooms, now they are the basic rooms. while the basic rooms are clean and comfortable, it is worth it to upgrade for 20 bucks a check in. Excalibur is one of myfavs sinply because its a chuck e cheeses for adults. However its not my lucky casi no. I am charmed every time I walk into Excalibur. never noticed a weird scent. Excalibur is a slight step up from other low end properties on the strip. its also connected to more upscale properties like Mandalay Bay. also it is near the lovely Four Corners. Excalibur is a good place.

I spent three days at the Ex then moved to Vdara with my dirty clothes in a laundry bag, put the bag in the closet. The next morning, I opened up the closet and the odor was unmistakable: Excalibur! Smoke with carpet extractor cleaning solution.

With that said, I would stay here for free, I really liked the pool, throwing back a few Bud Lime-a-Rita's was a blast.

I walk through Excalibur quite often to get from Luxor to NYNY (Usually when I'm trying to get from MB to NYNY and the tram is closed) and the food court used to have a very nauseating smell (you pass right by it when coming from the Luxor bridge and through the casino to the strip). I couldn't place what it was, maybe something like greasy food mixed with cleaning solution. I always walked through as quickly as I could because it was really close to making me sick. That said, the last time I walked through I didn't notice that smell.

To me it is just that horrendous buttery vanilla smell. Not sure if that is the same smell you are all talking about. It just isn't pleasant.
