I usually go to Vegas for a week at Christmas but this year I'm thinking of going for rodeo week. I hear the atmosphere is great. Has anyone here been to Vegas at that time of year and would you recommend it?

I've been there and it is a riot. Tons and tons of huge hats and boots, lol

We went and saw Garth during this time, and there is an Asian club over in that area that the people going to had to pass our waiting line. Oh, if I could only describe some of the looks and under-the-breath comments I heard from those cowboys....

You will have a great time

OMG. There wasn't a racist comment made. The only comments were about how short the dresses were, how high the heels were and how most of the girls couldn't walk in them sober, and what the heck were they going to do later?

    Wrong wrong assumption casinoboy

No worries. I don't even know why I mentioned it. My bad. I was just trying to paint a picture. I can only imagine that "scene" isnt one a cowboy is likely to encounter often.

I made a fairly long post about the actual rodeo week, and not this other bullshit, in another current thread called "Christmastime in Vegas...."

It's not all wannabees- not by a long shot. Lots of dirty trucks and more than a few small, beat-up RV's can be found in certain parking lots during rodeo week. You meet a lot of genuinely nice people from way out in the sticks. Some of them are unsophisticated and unused to mixing with others who are different from the people they see every day, and a few are likely to be racist and perhaps not very subtle about it. I doubt many of them vote for the political candidates that I like. Take 'em or leave 'em, they are what they are.

Rodeo weeks I've been to Vegas I enjoyed sitting and people watching a bit more than normal (cowboys, what can I say?). We never found it overly busy and the atmosphere was still great.

I love rodeo week. It's a great time to play advantage blackjack. Just wear a cowboy hat and the pit critters will assume you're just another stupid cowboy playing blackjack.

You can get away with insane spreads and play much longer sessions.

Slotchick - that's exactly how I felt. Fun people watching and nice guys to talk with. Some of them are obviously out of their element and that made it even more fun to talk with them. :)

Really a fun time--been going now for several years---never set foot in Thomas Mack yet, but thinking about it this year. Sportsbook at Mirage is taken over by Jack Daniels promos---I'm sure more hotels do the same----South Point and Orleans are major NFR headquarters---

Dealers and CW are dressed in cowboy gear---closed circuit TVs are on the NFR---piped music is all country---many good country music artist are in town

The weekend of Dec 7 you also have all the college conference championship games----fun time to be in Vegas----

This is my favorite trip of the year to LAS----

I was there in 2010 for Rodeo week. Loved it. Funniest thing (for me) was seeing everyone leave with their cowboy hat carriers. All really nice people though from my perspective.

About Vegas Rodeo week. A couple of years back, we were in Vegas for the NASCAR awards which happen to overlap the rodeo week(s). We could not figure out why seemly everyone was dressed in cowboy hats and boots, jeans and large belt buckles, we had no clue about the rodeo being in town. We had been to Vegas several times before but seeing this was a first for us. Had Western wear alien taken over? Not so. After finding out what had brought all the CW folks to town, we joined in the fun and while enjoying some “cowboy bands, all u can eat b-b-q buffets and “two step” lessons we were hooked.

After arriving home, we began to watch the televised rodeo on CMT and have been to the Saturday night rodeo at Cowtown NJ. Last weekend we went to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Rodeo, plus a few nights at Harrahs AC. It was a nice get-away. You gotta be nuts to climb on the back of those animals! But its fun to watch. Thanks Vegas for giving us another fun escape and a little more color to our life!

So this year we’re off to Vegas for a few days of NFR. We have our hats and boots ready to go…looking forward to a great time and maybe pick-up the large belt buckle or two at the Cowboy Christmas. Speaking of which. Does anyone have any information about the Cowboy Christmas and the Cowboy Experience at the convention center? We plan to spend time at the Expo center checking out these two events. Any suggestion or tips on how to get the most out of our time there would be helpful. JW

Yes, some of the very worst (and very best) Blackjack play takes place that week. It's fun to watch and take advantage if you can.
