I did a search and didn't come up with anything so I'll ask here:

What is the policy on drinking on Freemont street. I went for the first time to the downtown area and saw a few people drinking, so I went to the store and bought drinks for myself and my girlfriend's sister. We enjoyed the drinks, took them with us down the street and from casino to casino.

I just read somewhere that you cannot drink alcohol bought from a store on freemont street on the street, is this the case? Did I dodge a bullet by not getting a ticket? Would be good to know for my upcoming trip in October.

Under the canopy is fine. I do it all the time. I buy from the abc store and stsnd right out front of it drinking. I like to lean on the big cement trash can that's right there just takimg in the sights and smells.

Its the east fremont st area that they frwn on it but you will know if you are there. Just look up.

from another article posted on here today

the law is you can drink in public any drink that is purchased or obtained from one of the casinos or casino bars......those establishments have a license that allows off property consumption.......you can drink those drinks anywhere

if your drink is from one of the bars on east Fremont (outside from under the canopy) they most likely do not have an off property license so you cannot take the drink and leave or drink it in public

if you buy from a liquor store you cannot drink it anywhere within 1,000 feet of a school, church, liquor store or some other places.....and as the article stated is is pretty much impossible to be 1,000 feet away from any of those places anywhere around Fremont street since there are liquor stores in the casinos

there is no rule about bringing it from home

so basically if you are drinking a drink that clearly came from a casino or casino bar you are OK even outside the canopy.......if you are drinking a drink that is not clearly from a casino bar like a beer in a can or bottle you should be OK especially under the canopy unless you are acting like an idiot......if you are outside the canopy you should be OK unless you are acting like an idiot

if you are toting around a 12 pack and have one you are drinking under the canopy or not under the canopy and you are acting like an idiot you will get a ticket most likely and even if you are not acting like an idiot you will probably have a chat with the police

if you do get a ticket from the police it will not have the location where the alcohol was purchased unless you further your stupid behavior and specifically tell the cop to put that on the ticket (unless it was from a casino or casino bar of course).....without the location of where the alcohol was purchased because of the lack of clarity of the laws the ticket will end up invalid

so as long as you have a cup, a single beer or other bottled or canned beverage, a beverage that clearly came from a casino, you have not clearly just walked out of a liquor store or east Fremont Street bar or if you have clearly walked out of a casino or casino bar you should be OK anywhere downtown especially if not acting like an idiot

if you manage to get a ticket unless you are really stupid it will be invalid when you go to court

Problem is, most people there are on vacation so fighting a ticket won't be much of an option (though it would give a GREAT reason for another trip back to Sin City, any excuse is a good excuse)

I did a post a year or so ago that spelled out the legalities. Under the canopy is perfectly legal, outside the canopy is not. However... enforcement is doubtful on East Fremont unless you are causing problems or if they (the police) are dealing with some other problem and you happen to get caught up in it.

The bouncer at one of these told me that as long as I have one foot in the door, I was fine with a drink in my hand. (I needed to step out to take a phone call.)

Last year the helpfull bartender at the pizza place on East Fremont gave me a plastic "traveller" for me to pour my beer into when I got up to leave. Mind you this was before all the first friday crap in the last few months. I would bet that on all but the first friday of the month it would be relatively easy to wander between the El Cortez (and soon the Downtown Grand) and the FSE. I don't believe anyone has been hassled between the MSS and Plaza either for open beverage either.

About 4 or 5 years ago my female friend and I drank a 12 pack on the corner of Fremont and I believe it's 7th street just before the el cortez. We had police cars passing us by as we sat with our 12 pack next to us and not one of them stopped to say a word to us.

Wether or not that would still happen today is a matter of wether or not they choose to enforce it. We weren't acting like idiots. Just sitting there on the curb drinking our beer and people watching the folks heading to the western.

    theShaah......

I certainly believe that happened just like you said, a few years ago.

However, it would be "asking for trouble" now. They are trying to prevent locals with no cash &
questionable behavior from scaring off the gambling tourists.

I lived in Galveston for seven years during the 1970's. We used to say that the Houston "tourists"
would come down on the weekends " on a motorcycle with a $5 bill & a dirty shirt, and they wouldn't change either one!" That's what they are trying to remove from Fremont East, in particular .

I just got back from Vegas this morning. Can tell you I spent all of this week walking with drinks on many Vegas streets. No problems anywhere.
Purchased tall boys from ABC store under the canopy, and walked over to El Cortez with no issue. Same thing from Sam's Town to Eastside Cannery on Boulder.
Stayed at Rio, carried two drinks with me on a walk from there to the strip.
As long as you aren't acting like an idiot, pretty safe to drink a beer most anywhere on foot in Vegas.

So what if I'm in the Flamingo (or some other random casino with a store that sells cans of beer). Am I allowed to buy one and then wander through that same casino with it? I do it all the time, but wondering if it is officially ok.

Yes, you can wander in the same casino. However, your chance of being asked to finish the drink prior to entering a bars or restaurant within that same property are pretty good. Even if you purchased the drink at that location. Example, you buy a beer at Gilley's (TI) and walk out with the beer to play blackjack. If they have someone working the door, the door person will most likely deny you entry if you still have that drink in your hand.
