What is "IT" that keeps us (most at least) hooked on Vegas

In May 2010 I made my first pilgrimage to LV from the moment my feet hit LV Blvd I was hooked.

My dear bf could careless if he ever goes back, I on the other hand, all but fantasize about the place. I am making my 6th trip in a few weeks and am just obsessed with planning, reading, reading others TR's and thinking about being there.

I know I am not the only one to feel this way. I am wondering what opinions are about what it is that draws us in and holds us tight?

It is not just gambling, there are plenty of places to do that, my daughter goes to school at NYU, so I am in NY often so it's not about the food and activities.

Just wondering what people are thinking.

Its gotta be the Hookers and Blow...... errrr I mean......
For me its an escape. My yearly boys trip is one of the few things I look forward to every year.... although with all the weddings and possible pregnancies this might be phasing out:cry:. To me its an escape from reality. I can drink day and night and not think twice about it. I can care less about going to a tropical resort, hanging at the beach all day or going on a cruise. Like you said, you can gamble anywhere, you can have the finest dining in select location and you can go see great shows even in your own hometown... but you can't have it all at once like you do in Vegas. I can get away from home, work, and all my worries.... and there's always that possibility (it might be a slim chance) that my trip can pay for itself and I can plan another trip back sooner than expected.

Drinking/gambling, fine dining, and the occasional show. In that order.

We were there in December and just 3 weeks ago we were talking about vegas and both of us said we have lost the urge to go back.

2 1/2 weeks ago my brother in law called and said he wanted to take his wife to vegas for her birthday and asked if we could go along as they have never been before.

We are now booked for November and just as excited as ever.:drunk:

I would say gpenguins67 is right. It is a chance to let your hair down and just have some fun and forget about reality for a few days and recharge.

It's the whole package all in one spot.

    -The food
    -The pools
    -The gambling
    -The shows
    -The weather
    -The comped drinks
-Being able to walk from place to place
    -24/7 nature of the town
-Being able to carry a drink around

There are places with some of these things but no place with ALL of them. I can gamble in Michigan but you can forget about getting a comped drink, hitting up a nice pool, or walking across the street to a competitor in search of better rules or lower limits. It simply doesn't exist.

Many people talk of all the new casinos opening up elsewhere, that cuts back their trips to Vegas. Not the case with me in Roanoke. Charleston, WV casinos (closest) are a joke. Greenbrier, WV is too snooty, requiring you stay there and table mins are green chip. Cherokee, NC is also a joke.

So my love affair with Las Vegas continues as it has for over 35 years. As always, I love the idea of gambling/dining 24/7. Plus I've always loved the southwest scenery....combination of desert/mountains.

Going to Vegas and doing things that I would be thrown in jail for back here in Tennessee is a big deal for me!

    Hey Now!!!!

I agree. I go to AC every 2 months or so. I pass right on by Dover and the ridiculous MD joints and head for the Cape May ferry. But even AC is no substitute for Vegas. 8 hours each way to AC.

This is a case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. Sure all of the restaurants, shows, and clubs are here and to an even greater extent than in Vegas. Gambling can be done in several places within a couple hours drive. But besides the better vibe, I think a big part of Vegas is all of this is out in the middle of nowhere and far far away from your everyday life. If I go to dinner and a lounge here, at the end of the night I'm back in my normal bed and waking up to my normal day. Even If I'm in AC or something, the vibe is weaker since its not a vacation destination, and I still feel like I'm just a "short" drive away from home. Its too local.

Vegas somehow gives me the feeling of detachment from the real world in a way I never get here in NY or even by visiting any other city.

I could not agree more the AC vibe is weak at best. Luckily it's just over 2 hours drive from my place.

I think the freedom Vegas allows is priceless. Detachment from the "real world" could sum it up rather well. No matter how much I love it there by the 4 th day I feel like I am ready to go only to start planning my next trip before I know it.

IMO there really is no place quite like it!

The vibe of Vegas! Being able to get away from it all (im a mom of 3 young boys and have a full time job...oh and a husband ;) ) and having 24/7 fun at my disposal. The stories and experiences that I have in Vegas just makes me want more:drunk:. I go 1-2 times a year and am always thinking about those bright lights and saving my money for my bankroll to Vegas.

My husband isn't a big Vegas fan and the crowds and late nights but being the extrovert that I am I thrive on it. Besides home, Vegas is my happy place

    It's a playground.

I am super frugal but I love luxury, glitz and glamour. I get to mix all of these things in Vegas!

I feel transported. I get to be who I want, do what I want and do it all the time.

Vegas is a world, a bubble all it's own. Vegas is purely magical and you are surrounded by people who are high...on life!

Price. Not many places in the world where I can get a RT flight and 3 nights hotel for $200.

    1) The Wynncore
    2) Lax rules in Baccarat and tons of tables where you can play by yourself.

If Steve Wynn gets his wish and opens both in Pennsylvania and in Everett with the same lax rules of Bac there as in Vegas, then I wouldn't be drooling over Vegas anymore. I still love Vegas but all that traveling is a pain in the ass and not to mention expensive. Lived in NV for about 8 months or so and enjoyed it but after a while Vegas loses its luster. So now I understand why some folks stressed that your vacation destination may not be a good place for full time long term stay.

The other thing I used to like is, that I was always treated like something I wasn't. A fair size gambler and got comps I didn't deserve. Comped rooms (3 nights) at Encore shortly after they opened and Wynn was trolling for new customers. Same thing at Venetian and Palazzo. Nice comped rooms at both, but I've been found out and that doesn't happen anymore.:evillaugh

The vibe - escape from work, drinking, gambling, eating... and it's cheaper than a DUI!

Vegas has a pulse - a special vibe if you will - that keeps me coming back (again and again)!
