    New to Video Poker here.

I've been doing research and watching YouTubes on playing JOB Video Poker. I typically just play slots, a little blackjack and craps when in Vegas.

However, this time I decided I was going to attempt to play Video Poker more and am trying to educate myself as to how to play the game.

We'll be staying downtown and wondered if anyone knew where I could buy a strategy card for JOB to use while I learn how to play? About how much do they cost?

    Any pointers would be appreciated.

    Thanks. :nworthy:

ValerieJo- hope you don't freak out when receiving the cards. It takes a bit of time/study to familiarize yourself with the notations. I would recommend starting with the Beginners Strategy and progressing through Recreational, Basic, Advanced Strategies as you become comfortable.

Download Video Poker! app for iPhone for endless hours of practice. It also gives you free perfect strategy for the first 100 hands and after that you go to the hand analyzer to show the perfect play. It has JOB and the Double Bonus games.

If the ones you ordered don't arrive in time from Downtown you can buy the JoB strategy card for around $1.50 to $2 at the Walgreens, ABC or any of the souvenir shops on Fremont Street as well as probably the gift shop in each of the casinos. They are usually right up at the cash register.

Download the WinPoker program online. You can use the program free for JoB or pay to upgrade to all games. (I just bought the program last week but there are too many variations to keep them straight so it is best to stick to 1 and 2 that are similar.)

It has a "warn" mode where it tells you are making the wrong play, it has an "autohold" mode if you want to go through all the correct plays, it has a "test" mode to tell you your mistakes only after you make them, etc.

Then at the end, you can check your session stats and see how good you really are at correct strategy.

I am also going to look into those strategy cards, though. Sometimes I get too :drunk: and start to not pay as much attention...... :)

    Good luck!

While I agree that non-professionals don't need to know proper strategy for EVERY single VP variation, I would suggest that it's a good idea to know more than one or two. Reason being is that it's always a good idea to play the best pay table available, and that can vary by property. This is probably more important on the strip than downtown. At the very least, I would suggest using vpfree2 to scout ahead and find out the best pay tables for the property that you plan on staying at, then practice up on those games.

I guess I do it backwards then. LOL I check vpfree and then plan my VP play at properties that have full pay tables for the variations I know well.

I don't want to reward an establishment for having less than full pay, so I just won't play VP there. (But I might play other games/slots/tables)

    VP Strategy Master

This is a program that will generate the correct strategy for just about any game and any pay table. You can copy and paste the results into a Word document and print them out.

Related to by not the same as WinPoker. This one just generates the strategies; you don't play against it.

For all the talk about phone apps for video poker has me thinking that the OP could probably just find some images on the internet using images.google.com and searching for "video poker strategy card" and then just copy them to their phone and then when in Vegas jut put a shortcut on the phone to quickly link to the strategy card.

The name of the author of the app is Robert Suh. It has a red background with yellow lettering. If I remember correctly, type in "Video Poker" under Search and it is about the 3rd or 4th one.

Nothing can replace practice. Get the software and practice a game you know is available, set to the paytable you will be playing, until you hit 98% accuracy or higher. You should have a strategy sheet in Vegas, but you don't want to be consulting it every fifth hand. You would come to hate video poker and would probably end up feeding slots.

Strategy sheets are available several places and can be found free on the web. The important thing is to use one you understand and have practiced with. I make my own sheets because my wife learns stuff a certain way and evaluates hands a certain way. If you'd like, and if I have one made, I could pm you a sheet for the game(s) you want.

And I hope you plan to play at a casino that offers fair games. That comes first in my planning, just as da1chifan said.

Quick question. I've been practicing up on Double Bonus Poker, using the Wizard of Vegas' site, and using an App on my iPhone by Robert Suh.

Just for fun, I compared the 2 programs on a particular hand to see the correct strategy. I have dealt to me:

    9 of Spades
    5 of Diamonds
    4 of Clubs
    6 of Clubs
    8 of Clubs

The Wizard program calls for me to hold the 4, 6, and 8 of Clubs to try for the straight flush. The iPhone App calls for me to hold all but the 4 of Clubs to try for the straight.

    Which one is correct?

I don't have a hand calculator here right now but I would suspect that they are both correct, that the difference is so close and negligible (akin to a thousandth or ten thousandth of a percent) that its just a case of one program is rounding up and the other is truncating.

If you are looking to play 10/7/5 DB or 9/7/5 DB, the Wizard's program is correct because 7 for 1 on a flush pushes the straight flush draw ahead. If you are looking to play 9/6/5 DB then the iPhone App is correct in holding 4 to a straight since the flush now only pays 6 for 1. Choose a different game to play for any paytables lower than 9/6/5. :evillaugh

Double check the two programs are using the same paytable to analyze the game. The Wizard's site will use 10/7/5 DB by default (but you can change the paytable). I don't have an iphone, so I dunno about the other program.

Nah, the difference in returns are both greater than 1% depending on what flush payout you use.
