Though neither incident appears to be tourist related, it's yet another reminder of why jaywalking in Las Vegas is a bad idea!!!

    http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2013/sep/17/two-men-believed-be-jaywalking-seriously-hurt-sepa/

Please, don't do it... Metro loves ticketing for this and at worst, your attempt to save 5 minutes could cost you your life.

I've read many posts on this board about cutting across Flamingo to get from The Palms to the Gold Coast and the like... traffic moves very fast on most of Las Vegas' wide arterial streets.

Coming from somewhere that has no laws preventing you crossing the road whenever you want (other than motorways/freeways) can someone explain what counts as Jaywalking?

I assume you can cross a small suburban street at any point but where do the "you must wait for the green man" rules kick in?

and then people will complain that they have to use the pedestrian overpasses on the strip that were built just for this purpose, lol.

Besides the pornslappers, one of my biggest pet peeves in LV is jaywalkers. Those who do it assume that traffic should yield to them; yet, in all the times we've been to LV, we've never seen anyone ticketed or even warned.

when i was taking my driving test years ago i slowed because someone ran across the street in front of me and i actually got in trouble and marks docked because they were not at a controlled crossing. I said "what was i supposed to do, run them over"? I don't remember his response but slowing down was not it.

It really is quite foolish to Jaywalk in any major city, but especially Las Vegas. Either foolish or they have a death wish.

Besides, my wheels aren't what they used to be, and I know damn well my 180 lb frame can't go up against a ton (or more) of metal.

One of the most dangerous crossing in LV is from Mirage to Harrah's and vice versa. People just defy the signal. A cab out of the Mirage has the right of way on green and people are not counting on this or just don't know about it. I once saw a man dressed in jockey shorts, a robe and flip flops attempt that crossing against the signal. A huge truck was bearing down on him and the driver was leaning on his air horn. The truck missed the guy by less than 6 inches.

Now that is a fact. Amazing how many times I've seen the countdown clock down to 5-7 seconds and people think they can run 6 lanes (or is it 8?) of traffic to the other side. Good thing there's that median there. Probably saved a lot of lives.

Crossing outside a crosswalk or designated crossing area. I have read online on another message board and confirmed with a friend of mine on Metro that even residential streets you can be ticketed for jaywalking.

If you watch Vegas Strip in TruTV the cops on there mention quite often that is why those concrete barriers are there as well. But they don't stop people from jaywalking

I heard fine for jay walking in Las Vegas is $190.00
Yes Breeze147 that crosswalk from Mirage to Harrah's is wild seen some really stupid stuff there. besides the fact that you get about half way across the street and it starts the count down.
Was it last year or the year before that they had over 100 pedestrian deaths.

You're saying that 2 people per week were killed in the same crosswalk over the course of a year? Do you have a link for this?

I think he means in Las Vegas as a whole? This year so far it is at 35, and last year for the whole, 42. 100 is not out of the question, especially when a car hits a bus stop and kills 5 or 6 people, or plows up a sidewalk.

Yep - being that I am always up that end of the strip I see clowns always defying that crossing area.

What pisses me off the most (in Vegas or anywhere) is when I see a mom with kids in tow jaywalk instead of walking a few yards to an intersection. It's not bad enough they are doing it themselves but they are literally training the next generation of jaywalkers. There is an stretch near my work that is real bad about this because the grocery store is across the street from an apartment complex.

I personally think you should get bonus points if you just bump or brush them with your car a little

Pedestrian entitlement is out of hand.

Here is the most aggressive enforcement I heard of on my last trip. If you step off the curb and look to see if the bus is coming, you might be ticketed for intentional jaywalking. I rode the bus with a local who had received such a ticket.

    That's not enforcement. That's fundraising!
