I'm planning a solo trip the last week (M-F) of January 2014. Looking at two hotels through United vacations. Mirage and Aria. Wanting to relax after 6 weeks of Christmas retail. I am coming from an area that will be -20 to -30 below with 50+/- mph winds, so the "cooler" weather is fine. I have been there 12-13 times in 25 years always in January or February.

    1) Outdoor pool to lay around, drink, and relax. Because of the cooler weather, the pool needs to be in the sun.

    2) Nice hotel

    3) If either hotel would be more apt to have free upgrades

MGM is OK, but the pool is in the shade
Monte Carlo better price, but the bar is closed.
Caesars and Bellagio are great, but out of my current price range
Paris has a nice leisure pool, but I did not like the hotel/casino

    Any input would be appreciated.

I love Mirage's pool and it is heated but Aria's is too and they have several hot tubs surrounding. I would go with Aria.

Mirage vs. Aria... head to head? I've always liked the Mirage, but it's not what it was 20 years ago, so Aria would be the pick here. Even though the Mirage/TI combo is my pick for favorite strip property, it's mostly for sentimental reasons.

We've stayed at both but we prefer Mirage to stay. It just seems like home and the location is great. Aria is very nice and very upscale.

I've had much better luck at Aria's casino tho. I've never hit anything of worth from the Mirage.

Base don your priorities, you really cannot go wrong with either Aria or Mirage. I would probably go with Aria. Nicer pool, plus it sounds like relaxation is one of your priorities and Aria has the much nicer rooms and beds

If the pool is important to you, I would call and confirm what's going to be open before you book anything. Sometimes hotels take the winter to do maintenance and/or renovations on their pool areas, so even though it's "supposed" to be open, I definitely remember staying at Mirage during January and finding out that their pool area was completely closed for construction. I'd just make sure there's nothing major scheduled.

Never been to Aria until last week and came away impressed. Will make every effort to stay there on my next visit.

Great restaurants (the $19/pp Julian Serrano 3 course lunch is not to be missed!), the Sports Bar with decent VP paytables with top shelf comped booze and the extremely hot and busty CWs seals it for me!

I can't comment on pools but Aria >>>>>> Mirage. The only reason I would put Mirage > Aria is if I wanted to be closer to Wynn and Venetian. Aria is a great location but some don't like the distance of the walk to the strip.

A little off topic, but the Aria seems to have much better drink service than the Mirage. I'll be staying at the Aria for the first time next month so if you want me to check anything out while I'm there I will. :)

I will be going that week also. Maybe I will run into you out there. I haven't decided yet, but generally stay at the mirage. It's got a great sports book too.

Aria's pools should have some place in the sun most of the day. They have plenty of trees, but by noon, there should be sun in some part of the pool all day. There is a nice hot tub near the entrance.

As for the rooms, Aria's basic rooms are far better than Mirage's basic rooms. Aria's basic rooms would be more like Tower Deluxe rooms at Mirage. They have a nice big bathroom at the expense of space in the bedroom area.

If you can, upgrade to a Corner Suite at Aria. It is an amazing, suite with top notch service, much better than the service in Aria's basic rooms. Corner Suites are real two-room suites and the maid service is really amazing. They even untangled my phone charging cable, leaving it neatly coiled. :) ...and the turndown chocolates are really wonderful Belgian chocolates with flavors to die for.

If you can't tell, I'm becoming a bit of an Aria fan.

For simplicity and easy access of the Strip, Mirage would be it. If you want a great overall experience yet don't mind the minor inconvenience of things being out of the way then Aria would be good. Preference wise, Aria is a better casino plus it is near the Bellagio. If you want to be near the great shopping then Mirage would be it. Either one you choose you will have a great time.

Definitely call the hotels first regarding the pools.

Personally Aria hands down. Stayed there MDW 2011 and the pools are great and it is very relaxing.

    Enjoy.

Just got back from Vegas and stayed at Aria for first time. Always used to stay at Caesar's but got a great deal at Aria so decided to try it. No regrets. The room (Deluxe King) was great. Clean, new, and the bathrooms spacious. But more than the room, the staff at Aria from the cooks behind the line at the buffet to the security guard, concierge, valet, etc... all were SUPER nice and went out of your way to make you feel welcome. Not like Caesar's at all. Best hotel experience. The pool, compared to Caesar's, was a little bland for my taste. Might want to check if it's open when you plan to go. I know they close a lot of pools in winter months. Also noticed, casino floor at Aria didn't smell smoky at all compared to Mirage. They must have a great ventilation system.
