Although the attorney made a credible argument, I feel that common sense should prevail.

The other man did not order the buffet. The man who ordered the buffet should know that it's all HE can eat.

And the manager shouldn't have stepped in on the first offense. If the practice was done repeatedly then the manager should step in. And rightfully so.

Yeah... I hear ya... when I hooked up with a pizza-chain right outta college, we had a very popular lunch buffet on weekdays (dinner on Tuesday). Pizza, soup, salad-bar and garlic toast for like $5 ayce. On a daily basis, nice people in business suits, etc. would come in and order at the counter (when you pay, you get the plates/bowl) and 3-4 times a day 1 or 2 in the party would say, "Oh I'm just gonna have a soda or an iced-tea"... "I'm not hungry"... "I just ate"... whatever... Then we'd very politely remind them there's no sharing on the buffet. "Oh yeah, yeah... we'd never do that"

Look over there 5 minutes later and the people who didn't pay had napkins spread out on the table with food on them. We'd go over (just like this dude did) and the answer was always the same, "well I'm not gonna eat a whole buffet price worth of food, but it looked so good, I just wanted to try a piece or two!!!

Or the other frequent scam was to eat all the food you could and then when you're full, go up and put several more slices on your plate and come over and ask for a box. When they're told you can't take home food from the "all you can eat", they'd go sit down at the table, wrap the slices in napkins, shove them their purse and leave. Women frankly were the worst offenders of the "all you can eat" policies. Even watched one lady build a salad from the salad-bar in a coffee-filter she brought from home or the office!

I feel sorry for the managers of buffets... you don't wanna look like an ass, but you also don't wanna get taken to the cleaners, cause when the word gets out it's easy to share... more and more people won't pay. I used to love the people who'd get all indignant and say, "well... I don't think we're going to come here anymore!!!" Really??? That's like a shoplifter getting busted and telling the manager he's gonna shop elsewhere! Please... by all means... do so!!!

It can go the other way too. I took care of a neighbor for the last 6 years of her life, who died last year at the age of 86. She enjoyed being at buffets up to the very end, but all she wanted to eat was mashed potatoes. I think she just enjoyed being around the variety. At any rate, I would pay $10 to get her into a buffet and she probably didn't eat 50 cents worth of food.

You won't find me feeling guilty for using a 2for1 buffet coupon.

that is highly commendable of you taking care of a neighbor

there is no reason to feel guilty or bad about using a legitimate coupon offer that a restaurant has circulated

the people in that clip were idiots and pretty much thieves and they should have been charged for a buffet and the lawyer should have been told to sit down and shut up

as for your neighbor I would have tried to talk to management and see if there was a way she could just order side dishes and would have done the calculations on what 3-4 portions of mashed potatoes would be VS a full buffet......of course with a BOGO coupon the two buffets may well have been the better deal

too many people think that restaurants are huge money makers especially those that say things like "I could make this at home for X" forgetting all the kitchen appliances, energy, TIME, ect that goes into them making it for X because they just look at the cost of two potatoes and some butter

they also forget that the 3 people in the group that are "just having water" are still taking up a table someone else could be at, when they get a plate and sneak a piece of pizza that plate has to be cleaned, the person bringing drinks still has to bring them refills and will probably get a dollar for a table of 9 (I do not tip full rate on buffets either since the people that bring drinks make min wage and do not perform full waitstaff service but still stealing from the buffet and leaving a dollar :rolleyes2: )....the table still has to be wiped down after they leave and most likely swept under as well because they probably threw the crust they did not eat on the floor so it would be less obvious they were sneaking food

the restaurant still has overhead, the TVs might be on (at some places) and on and on.......but the people stealing the food just think of it as a slice of pizza or two that "cost them" $.50 cents to make at home

these are the reasons that places do crazy things like saying everyone orders the buffet at a table or off the menu, but you can't do both or we charge extra for water or drinks for those not having any food sitting with buffet eaters or they just jack the price of the buffet up on everyone then of course comes the chorus of "but WE don't do that" (which comes loudest from those that DO just that)

The truth is that you are correct, that's their attitude about it. But that illustrates how far we've gotten away from the original Las Vegas business model of offering cheap or free food, rooms, drinks & entertainment to draw customers into the casino. It's all about the bottom line today, and they figure that if you don't like paying $200/night for a room and $30/person at the buffet you can just go someplace else for all they care.

I saw two ladies trying to pay for 1 buffet and then sharing. Manager made them pay or he was calling the cops. They paid.
