Okay, it's about that time that I have to start planning for my january trip. I will probably attend the 2014 CES convention but since the AVN expo is the week after the CES I am wondering if it is worth staying the extra few days (or a week?) to attend the AVN expo.

For the people who attended this year's 2013 AVN expo, was it worth it or was it just like the 2012 AVN expo (not many freebies and exhibitors and a total nuthouse in the hall during the fan days)? A number of my friends were disappointed with the AVN expo and won't be attending unless they change their venue (Hard Rock really not made to handle the expo IMHO).

I may just arrive at the CES on the 2nd or third day and then stay the rest of the week and attend the first and second day of the AVN expo (I can get in on the trade show day so I don't have to fight the fans) so I stay in vegas for 8 or 9 nights. The only thing is that flights are still expensive from Hawaii ($600+ r/t whereas it used to be in the $400's last year) and hotel rooms and rental cars are more expensive with the improving economy.

anyone else planning on attending the CES and AVN in 2014?

Hotel prices have gone up during those dates over the past month or two. I go during the same two weeks, but I go to CES and then SHOT. I have never been to AVN, but I think they should have kept it at the same time frame as CES. Funny how the same year AVN changes dates, all those sexy girls handing out swag at CES disappear. Freebies at all the exhibits at last years CES dropped more than half conpared to the previous year. I was expecting to see a lot of AVN girls at SHOT last year, but hardly saw any...guess girls and guns don't always go together...lol.

Two years ago, I was at the ANE (the toy expo adjoining the AVN halls) at AVN working for a client and last year I went with a couple friends just as tourists (much better than working!). I would say last year was the same as two years ago in terms of the crowds and difficulty getting around

The reason AVN moved from the same time as the CES is because the CES exhibitors (that pay an extraordinary amount for floor space) complained that potential customers/clients were spending way too much time in the AVN halls instead of the CES halls.

AVN isn't what it used to be years ago and frankly not worth the time. Most of the "actresses" look way better on DVD than they do in person. That lifestyle has not been kind to most of them.

Well, maybe. Probably true. But AVN moved their dates, not the CES. And I recall reading a couple years back that AVN moved because it was cheaper for them not to be there during CES when so many rooms are already filled up

I might give you "many", but I dunno about "most"... I was at the Hard Rock last year during the first couple days of the AVN's. I didn't attend the conference, but in walking around during that time and there were some stunners!!! I'm not sayin' 10's in the face, but OUTRAGEOUS bodies on attractive women ALL over.

I've seen my share of porn over the years and acknowledge your point though... it's certainly not a career conducive to longevity that's for sure.

Really interessed in the AVN been wanting to go there for years ,

I dont mind big crowds/no freebies all i wanna do is meet my favorites

Are many "stars" taking pictures with fans/signing stuff ( i dont mind if they charge extra for pics)

Is it only current stars or can we expect some "legends" like Ron jeremy, Christy canyon, nina hartley....

I go to the AEE/AVN show every year and will go again in January.

The HRH is a terrible venue (particularly the Joint) for the show, as the lighting is very dark, the girls are often seated a level above you behind railings which makes taking photos with them difficult, and it is packed and claustraphobic on the fan days.

But the HRH is apparently reasonably priced for exhibitors and they are very happy to have the adult industry onsite - unlike the uptight Venetian management.

Even though the show during fan hours was not the best, they do seem to get more and more performers in attendance at the HRH (even just walking around) than in past years. I think this is because the model agencies have stepped into the place of the major studios and now run their own stands. Many of the major adult studios do not bother to operate stands these days as they don't do much business during AVN any more and so financially it is not worthwhile for them. However, the AVN show is still the best way to market new girls, and hence the agents have stepped in. Because many of the girls that now appear to sign no longer have big studios paying their way, it seemed that most girls signing in the Joint this past January were charging for autographed pictures ($5), dvds ($20) and magazines ($25) and for photos with them ($5).

You will see current girls as well as long retired porn legends walking around the HRH.

They seem to have more parties around the HRH at the various nightclubs on every night of the AVN than ever before - but these are predictably sausage fests where you will generally get nowhere near the performers.

As always, I think your best bet to really enjoy AVN week is just to hang out at the HRH bars each night and just wander the casino floor as you are likely to bump into adult performers everywhere you turn.

If you can get into the trade only days it is probably best to do that and give the fan days a miss - although the Joint is not open on the trade days and so you will miss seeing the 100 or so girls that rotate through the Joint on a 1-2 hourly basis over the course of the fan days. If you do go on fan days - be prepared for a massive crush of humanity in the Joint and to have to pay for autographs and photos.

Good post... my observation was the same. Again, I didn't attend the conference, was just there for a couple days, but saw what seemed to me an AWFUL lot of people in lines and just generally the HRH seemed too small for what was going on. I too overheard a lot of complaints about the size of the conference vs. size of the venue.

You can generally rely on Wicked, Digital Playground, Jules Jordan and Evil Angel to have stands. I doubt if Elegant Angel will be around in January.

To be honest and fair, you would see the same thing on every college campus in the country. You see an attractive coed throughout the term and suddenly she comes in during finals week without makeup. She is virtually unrecognizable. Women who wear a lot of make up tend to look a LOT different without it. I am told that is because they intentionally reduce natural features in their face for the make up look.

actually I find many female stars much different without their makeup. almost like night and day, some are unrecognizable without their make up.

I saw a promo on an upcoming "cleveland" show with betty white last night. they will have the MTM female stars on as a reunion type of show (I think they are in a bowling league or something). While I recognized most of the ladies I barely recognized MTM herself. Didn't realize it was her until I saw the rest of the gang.

I think in real life you also find that many females look much different without their makeup. In my college days my dorm used to have fire alarms (we probably set the record for most alarms in a semester, 30+ in a 4 1/2 month period). the alarms went off mostly at night and by law we had to evacuate so fire dept people could check on the alarm. we got to see the girls without their make up. some girls looked gorgeous even without their makeup but others looked so different (wish we had cel phone cameras in those days just to get shots of them) that they were unrecognizable.

what happens at the expo during the fan days is that there are bottlenecks at the various booths that have the popular starlets. you have dozens (if not hundreds) of guys waiting in line to get a pic or an autograph with the star (esp. the popular stars). sometimes the girl is there for only an hour or two every day so the fans wait in the line (sometimes an hour or more) for the star. usually the area around the girl is packed and they won't let you get closer than 10 feet if you aren't in line so it's sometimes hard to get a closeup pic of her unless you wait in line like the rest of the fans (good thing for cameras and phones with good megapixels). But then other times the booths are empty because the girls aren't there. The better companies will have a continuous stream of starlets at the booths during the expo, big companies like wicked have so many girls that they can have 2 or 3 or more girls at any time (except during lunch breaks) at the booth.

As others have mentioned, because of the high price of the booths many companies don't have a booth, instead showcasing the girls by having them walk around. The expo is also a good place to get noticed by producers so a number of unknowns walk the floor in skimpy outfits hoping to be the next star.

This is so different than a few years ago, when they were at the sands expo each production company would have a booth and showcase their girls, they would give away t shirts and other items and the stars would have promo pictures that they would sign for free. Nowadays many girls would have promo pictures for sale at between $5 and $15 and may also charge for their autograph, especially if you have your own picture of the girl.

but then the expo was more raunchy 10 years (or more) ago before the morals people put a stop to the nudity and debauchery. :evillaugh I think the current Hard Rock set up has turned off many (also higher prices) and so many don't attend anymore.

thanks for your input mrsandsman, I am still trying to decide whether to attend the AVN expo. Yeah, I really hate the set up, you have to go to one area to get to the main booths, then go to the auditorium during the fan days to see the other stars but also go to the area outside the auditorium for another group of stars and go to the back meeting rooms to see the products.

btw, there is usually an area where they feature "former" porn stars. Always great to see christy canyon and ginger lynn who were some of my favorites over 20 years ago. time has changes some but others still look great. during the week they also have some parties or get togethers with the stars at other venues (like strip clubs and regular clubs) but usually for a fee to get in. there is also a place on lvb (paradise video) which has a presentation where they have like a walk of fame thing with porn starlets. If you visit the place they have imprints (usually hand but sometimes of other body parts) of the starlets hanging on the wall of fame.

You have to be a real nut job to wait in line to get some porn star's picture. Just what the hell would you do with it? Hang it in your office?

What about beiber (and other "stars") supporters who will wait for hours to see the kid? Why thousands of japanese people waited for their favorite american star (like m jackson). Why people will wait to see William and Katherine. Why some will wait for an autograph from a sports star. I think it's more of an infaturation thing, meeting their favorite star (in this case porn star). To each his/her own, you may not want to or think it's nuts but others don't see it that way.

Previously when the AVN expo was at the sands expo, during the trade days it wasn't that busy and you could get signed autograph pictures and posters and take a picture with the starlet and if not very busy you can also chat with her for awhile. It was more of a Fantasy thing, like seeing your favorite tv or movie star and meeting her in person. some of my photographer friends even set up a photo shoot with a starlet, they probably paid $500 each but got some good shots of the girl.

with the expo at the hard rock not as many starlets attended during the trade day and during the fan days the lines and crowds are so large and long (and you have to pay for photos) and it was so noisy that it is hard to spend some time other than to say a quick hi, snap photo or sign autograph and move on to the next fan.
