Upcoming Trip-Weather

I am getting into town Sunday around 9AM, unfortunately it looks like it is going to rain for at least the first two days of my trip and there is a possibility of flash flooding. I have never been to Vegas when it is raining, does anybody have any good tips or secret routes to avoid getting drenched? Thanks everybody!

 

a big rain in Vegas is pretty cool if you have a room with a nice view. it's pretty neat to see it coming down everywhere and the lightning as well. to stay dry, just stay inside. the town isn't built to handle rain with the miniscule amount they get each year, so you don't want to mess around outside when it's a big rain.

 

Thanks Shifter. I usually bounce around the strip via bus, but may become a monorail patron this time, lest I be washed down the strip.

 

I recall a report a few years back about all the people living in the vegas sewers, they showed a guy in a suit walking out of the sewer(more of a big drainage tunnel) on his way to work. I guess that's called "making the best of it".

 

Damn-flash floods???

I am worried about my flight into Vegas , arrival Sunday, 12:52pm from Vancouver. I found this information.

Flash Flood Watch in effect from late Saturday night through Monday evening.

I don't like this for two reasons. I don't like being in a flight that may/may not go thru this and secondly could delay time in Vegas

 

Where are you staying and are you renting a car? If so, valet and you shouldn't get wet

 

Damn, I am scheduled to arrive Sunday as well.
Hopefully these types of rain storms dissipate quickly.

 

LOL thats not what im concerned about, i love the rain....just not flying nor landing in a pool.

 

Desert thunderstorms tend to blow in, dump huge quantities of rain in a short period of time, have tons of lightning and blow back out. They are fun to experience and won't ruin your trip.

We are in Vegas right now and spent the afternoon at the pool, while under a flash flood warning. It was cloudy, but only a few rain drops. Now, the storm driving in Thursday night from SoCal was amazing. Tons of rain and lightning.

 

I am at Mandalay Bay Sun-Wed. No rental car or taxis for me just shuttles , monorail and RTC buses.

 

LoL call me crazy but i changed my flight. I probably shouldn't mention it as it may back fire! Only info i found was a flood flash warning beginning sat night until monday morning. I should and hope i make it there around 1pm tomorrow instead of sunday. Wish me luck

 

Check weather.com and viewed it hourly for Sunday.
It appears it remains 40% and under for the rain up until 11:00am
Around noon it jumps to 50% and above thereafter.

We should be landed by then. Hopefully it breaks enough for those arriving afterward.

 

Any issues today? lol I am going to check as I am just headed out to the airport. Hope luck is with me to begin.

 

For any weather guru, how come the temp says 85 degrees but feels like 82 degrees? Not sure I have noticed that in any traveling I have done.

Usually it feels MORE than the actual temperature.

 

The heat index ("feels like") temperature is the air temperature with the effects of humidity factored in. I have seen the "feels like" temp be less than the actual air temp on days when there is very low humidity and a breeze.

 

When it is raining in Vegas stay away from mid-strip. The area around Flamingo, Harrah's and (IP) Quad floods quickly.

It's always like that in the desert because of the dry air. That's why 100+ in Vegas can be more comfortable than 85 in the south or Midwest with the humidity.

 

I was in Vegas last October when it rained and it was the first time I had seen rain Vegas, I was Downtown and I stood at the door of Four Queens watching most people diving in to casino's for cover.

 

Luck hasnt started so well lol. I made it but 2.5-3hrs late. Plane had to stop in Ontario, CA to fuel up. Took forever. The story goes he was circling vegas too much and due to weather was short on fuel. *shrug*. Weather was the culprate apparently.

But i am here and the car rental bus driver made things a lot better. Good sense of humor.

 

Another Sunday arrival by plane (10:00 pm). Unfortunately, the major part of my trip was going to be hiking at Zion NP on Monday and Tuesday. Then I would return to Vegas for a couple days and fly back.
With the forecast what it is, decided to scratch the whole affair and stay home instead. Had to accept the Allegiant cancellation fees ($120 total).
Tough call for a frugal traveler like myself, but what are the odds that remants of a hurricane would happen to hit right at the same time and same place as my travel days.
Back in the old days of 6-7 trips a year to Vegas, I wouldn't let this deter me. I'd just hang out in Vegas instead of worrying about Zion. And, have loads of fun.
Anymore, I don't have that same zest for Vegas. Thus, it was somewhat of a relief to not be tied down to a trip just just the flight was pre-paid.
However, I promise a return in October to do it all again.
