Staying DT.... I can't think of any reason to go to the strip!!!

We go once a year and usually make one trip to the strip.
Last year we went to see the Cosmo.

Honestly.... give me a destination there that will make it worthwhile for me to hop on the SDX.

We could go to a CET property and put points on the card, but seems kind of useless.

Ideas? Something we haven't seen after 8 trips in recent years.

Well, the Rio is supposedly having a zip-line running between VooDoo lounge and the Ipanema tower starting in late September...that's something, anyway!

Honestly I can't fathom how anyone could forget about Volcano Nachos. :)

    Ok, Margaritaville.
Husband has not been there, but I have on a girl's trip.

You are right, volcano nachos.... I'll put them on the list.

What is the Margaritaville casino like? I read it's kind of a MESS of construction near Flamingo.

We stay DT and/or in neighborhood casinos--go to the Strip only to see new casinos. If we have been in all of the new ones, we find no reason to go there.

Construction wasn't heard, seen or smelled inside Margaritaville when I was there last month.

If you are into shopping, a trip to the Fashion Show Mall or The Forum Shops, then that might be a reason.

There might be a reason to visit certain gourmet restaurants or new buffets.

Virtually all of the shows are on the strip.

The strip dominates the swimming pool scene & the club scene.

Having noted the above, I have been coming to Las Vegas for 33 years. I no longer swim, club, shop, do shows or dine at $100 restaurants.

Therefore, I leave my comfort zone downtown & take the SDX in order to meet friends & relatives at the strip resorts. Then I catch the SDX back to my "happy place" -- downtown.

I'm not really making a value judgment. It just depends on what you are seeking.

Honestly.... It sounds like you hate the strip, why are you trying to make excuses to visit it?

If you're a DT kinda person why not just stay there the whole time and enjoy your vacation?

I would say stay DT and enjoy your vacation. I don't think there's anything new worthwhile to see if you took 8 trips in recent years.

Wife and I will be there in 3 weeks and are having the same dilemma. Over the years we have slowly migrated downtown. The only reason we may go the strip is if we decide to see a show and walk around the newer resorts. This time if we go to a show on the strip that will probably be all we do. The strip just doesn't do it for me anymore. I am on vacation and don't want to spend my time walking long distances just to play games with bad pay schedules. Have fun!!!

Same here. We usually stay at the Orleans(wife likes the pool) and spend all of our time DT and offstrip.

Other than a trip to the Mirage buffet(2 for 1 LVA coupon) I stay away from the strip.(Down Spring Mountain to the Mirage garage and back out).

Bad gaming rules and crowds is not something I seek out on our annual trip to Las Vegas.

I still like to play live poker on the strip (Limit and Tournament) and blackjack on the strip (MGM, Bellagio, Aria) which offer the best odds (unless you are playing $5 single deck at El Cortez (they sweat $10+ action) or in the case of poker, action.

Strip also has 9/6 JOB from quarters up, but 10/7 DB and other good games are only found downtown/off strip.

I also like several Strip dining options (restaurants and buffets) and I like the atmosphere in the Wynn and will play BJ there every so often despite the slightly worse odds.

We stay downtown. Every couple of years I'll double book on the Strip, I don't know why I keep getting CET offers, but I do. Anyway, the last trip in April we double booked at Harrah's. We lasted 4 hours before we were on the WAX back to downtown.

It is just stuff like this that pisses me off. We got to Harrah's at 11 AM and tried to check in. No rooms unless we wanted to pay a fee. They did the paperwork and said we could pick up room keys at 4 PM. Once again :bang: we decided we don't like the Strip. So back to Harrah's to cancel the COMPED room. Now they tried to charge us an early checkout fee for a room that is not available yet. I tried to keep my cool, but was on the verge:grrr: After much arguing, a manager had to cancel the charge. I had swiped my cc earlier.

Probably won't need the Strip experience again for another 3-4 years when I have a weak moment. Although, when the big ferris wheel is completed, that might be worth a bus ride.

I have no problems with anyone who just loves the Strip, but we are in our 60s now and it just hasn't been for us for more than a dozen years.:peace:

Our last trip to Vegas was exactly like 21wins described...
Stayed at Orleans, played off strip and DT exclusively. Made one trip to Mirage for the 2 for 1 buffet. Took same exact route. No other reason to be on the strip for me...

    Thanks to all.

I guess I was feeling guilty that we would not be going to the strip at all this trip.... flying from DSM to LV, thought we probably should make the effort.
Now, I hear several of you are like us... no clubs, can swim at home, don't like all the damn walking, etc.

    Just needed some reassurance!

It's vacation, Sue, do exactly what YOU want to do. And it sounds like you're on track to do that. Strip, locals, downtown ... there are three Vegases because one size does not fit all. Have fun!!
