Hi We travel to the mgm next Sunday, our travel agent has just told us we have to pay a $300 deposit on arrival in case we trash the room etc.

Does this sound about right? And do we have to pay this in cash or will they just put it on card etc?

    Thanks all

    Chris

Its 2013, who still uses a travel agent for a trip to Vegas?

    Well, that's a helpful response.

To actually answer the question, this does sound right, in that pretty much every hotel (Vegas or otherwise) wants some sort of deposit, but I'd be shocked if it wasn't just a hold against your credit card. I've never heard of a Vegas hotel demanding a cash deposit at check-in. As long as you've got some slack in your credit card limit, you should be fine.

It depends if you want room charging privileges. $300 for a 3-5 night stay or so sounds about right. If you're there just for a night, they can probably waive it if you're not charging anything to the room.

Almost all hotels worldwide want some form of CC on file, just in case you damage the room. Most of them also put a hold onto your CC, so that you can charge things back to the room. I never recommend a debit card since some systems automatically charge your card for the hold and it can take up to 2+ weeks to get the money back into your account.

From my understanding, only casino guests can do a cash deposit.

All I have is a debit card, as long as I get it back I'm Ok with it i guess.

Aside from the other comments you have received. We use a travel agent every single time and guess what? We get what we want where we want and for some odd reason it has always been for less than trying to do it for ourselves.

We also avoid what we witnessed at TI a few weeks ago. A young lady in tears because she booked room at TI through whatever site and they didn't have any record of said booking.

When we go to Vegas it's to gamble. Not to gamble on weather we make it there or if we have a room etc.

MGM will most definitely want you to have at the very least a $300 hold on your credit card. I stay there a lot and this is standard for MGM hotels.

If you pay cash, they will happily refund you upon checking out. I have had that happen before too but I could have used the cash for the trip.

I have also tried to use my everyday use debit/credit card for the hold funds and they DO NOT accept cards like that. In order to use a card, it has to be a CREDIT card only.

The last time we stayed at MGM we had to pay a $600 hold. We expected this as we stay there often so we plan it into our trip but it can be a shock for a newcomer to MGM for sure.

    My two cents worth.

1 - We would always travel with multiple credit cards. Cheap insurance to make sure we have funds for anything that pops up.

2 - When using a credit card, the hold is minimal and no big deal.

3 - When using a debit card, it is a hard hold. You can not get to those funds until released by hotel and your bank.

4 - As to the person that had trouble with reservation made with so and so site and a problem - same happens with travel agents - which is one reason many only book direct with hotel. And often, a better price. Personal choice of course.

Will the hotels in LV accept your debit card?

The MGM has accepted my debit card for a portion of the hold fee. They charged it is a credit and we paid the rest in cash.

Yes, just realize there will be a hold on the money while you are there + any time it takes them to release the hold. So if you have no money in there, I believe it will be declined because they are attempting to charge $300 to it.

Also it may take a few days afterwards for them to release it. If you have an issue with this, I would suggest doing the deposit with cash as that will be returned immediately.

I believe I've heard others say that MGM is $100 deposit per day. People are mentioning a lot of numbers, so I'm guessing it is differences in the length of stay.

MGM deposit for incidentals is $100 per night or $200 per stay if more than 2 days. If you have a debit card then they'll put a hold on it for the $200 plus the resort fees and after checkout refund the difference off the $200 and whatever you might charge to the room.

The only times I use a travel agent is:
    1. Have a complicated airline ticket that I need to book
    2. Have a specialized trip (ex. safaris in Africa)

Every other time I use the airlines/hotel's direct website for reservations unless I find a better rate on an OTA. If that's the case, I do a best rate guarantee.

Exactly. However, sometimes it takes a while for the refund to happen. This happened to one of my friends and he wait for 2 weeks for the funds to be returned.

I hear this all the time, it must depend on the bank, I've never had to wait more than 2 days.
