Getting cash in Vegas

I forgot my roll in my car, and it's too late to go back :-( I need either an ATM or the ability to do a VISA cash advance without paying a ruinous fee. On my CU website, all the co-op ATMs that show up have a mention about being for employees of the given hotel only. I'm staying at Bally's... what's the cheapest, fastest, easiest way for me to get $$$

How much do they nail you? I figure it might be cheap 'cause they want you to gamble, or it might be horrendously expensive 'cause you're stuck. My bank's web site doesn't say and the bar is too freaking loud to try to call them

 

I would ask about taking a marker with cc as collateral for the "loan" and take only the amount you left in the car and then repaying asap upon returning home

 

You likely do not have a marker set up (or you wouldn't have created the thread), so the cheapest way is to limit cash withdrawals to the ATM and take out the daily max to lower the percentage of the fees (several $s from the ATM machine and your issuing bank, if applicable) vs. your withdrawal.

You may be able to have your bank wire money to the casino, but it may take a day or two minimum.

If you have a PIN number set up for your credit card, you can take out cash from the ATM and only owe the interest portion (shouldn't be a big deal if you don't carry a balance - just pay it off when you get back home and the interest damage should be minimal).

If you do not have a PIN number for your CC, your remaining two options are having someone wire money via Western Union (or something similar) or taking out a cash advance via your credit card. You will be charged $100 to take out between $2K and $5K from your CC, plus you will be charged a cash advance fee (likely 2% or another $100) from your credit card plus whatever your cash advance interest rate is until your entire balance is paid off (and then interest from the last statement until the day payment was applied). So you are looking at at least $240 minimum for $5K. You can take out a hundreds of dollars (or in total) but I believe you'll be paying 10%+ when all is said and done (assuming you pay it off in full at home - otherwise it'll be a lot higher).

everything depends on how much money you're talking about. if you're talking about thousands, you're going to be stuck paying horrendous fees.

 

I just had something similar happen. I did not leave my roll in a car though but in the safe at home.

The best solution I have found is this:

Call your credit union they will be able to give you a list of credit unions that they have a preset arrangement with. My CU is a small local and I still have 5 or 6 choices "close" to the strip. Take a cab to the local CU. Withdraw your money and head back and have fun.

My cab to and from was about $40.00 with tip. I was able to pull $10k with no problem. It was a huge pain in the ass and I will never do it again but it did save a trip.

In my opinion, it all depends on the amount you are talking. But I second the thought to call your Credit Union, find out if there is a shared branch locally you can go to and then cab it to make a withdraw. In all, should take an hour out of your trip and the cab fare will likely be way less than cash advance fees, etc.

 

Sorry, but I cannot see how taking a cab anywhere can cost less than an ATM fee. It would seem to me that, unless you're talking about more than $1000/day, paying the fees would make more sense than anything else.
And, since the OP specifically mentions ATMs and the "high" cost of the transaction fee, I'm pretty sure that $1000/day would be fine.
I'm a $500/day player, and the transaction fees don't bother me one bit...$24 bucks over the course of 3 days? $8/day? I drop more than that in tips every single hour while I'm playing.

 

Does your Credit Union have a phone app? I just bring mine up on my phone and it shows me where all the fee free machines are in the area

 

The last I knew, there was still a Wells Fargo ATM at Carnaval Court between Quad and Harrah's. Easy walk. I can use this without charge, but IIRC the fee on this is far less than those casino machines.

There are also some Wells Fargo ATMs at the airport and one in the car rental center. There are, however, some off-brand ones starting to appear at the airport.

This advice won't help in an accute situation like this, but ATM fees are pretty much the reason why I got an online account with ING Direct (now Capital One 360 https://home.capitalone360.com/ ). Decent interest from checking and savings accounts, and the best part is that their bank card uses the Allpoint network that covers all of the major convenience store chains across the nation (CVS, Walgreens, 7-11, etc.), and you don't pay fees while using those ATMs.

That makes it easy to get money even on the strip, since there are several stores right next to the big casinos where you can access your cash without having to pay an arm and leg for it.

 

Boogaloo, what is your daily limit on withddrawals with the ING account?

 

If he wants to get $1000 a day or less, absolutely the ATM fees are fine and that should be the plan. However, if he has a lower ATM daily limit or wants to pull out bigger money and do it all at once, a quick trip to the Credit Union is the play, he can knock it out at once and get on with the trip.
