It says Las Vegas no longer has homeless people, but does have a sizable contingent of former Boyd customers wandering aimlessly around town in search of properties that still don't have resort fees and have made no changes whatsoever in the last 40 years!

Go back 20 years and find any "_______ of the future" type articles written by dolts like this that proved accurate at all. This guy putting so much emphasis on Google Glass seems even more clueless than most. Probably a middle aged guy who thinks that's what the young crowd is into.

Besides the underlying premise of his predictions are that people don't change over time, that today's bread-and-butter customer over 55 enjoyed the same things 30 years ago that he does today and today's 25 year old will enjoy the same things he does today when he's 55. It's retarded and shows weak thinking.

1. it says gamblers like to be around people, talks about riverboats decks with the most people doing the best and "making the most dough"....kind of almost self explanatory unless you are a "journalist" I suppose.....gee the walmart with the most customers in it sells the most stuff.....who woulda thunk it

then it mentions auto craps tables.....the ones missing at least 3 people specifically the box man, the stick man, and the dealer.....they are "people" too aren't they

then it talks about gamblers being around "other people" by staring at their idiot phone and looking at avatars of some other dolt online gambling

2. it talks about Vegas the amusement park.....the Vegas that has already been tried and failed and that is being tried again and it struggling to even get the amusements built....no struggle to announce new stupid ideas, just a struggle to actually complete them or get them to turn a profit......even the ones that do make it often need a few incarnations (Stratosphere rides) or only last for so long (endless list)

3. why in the hell if people can gamble online will they come to Vegas to sit in a bar or an over priced restaurant and gamble online.....they will sit at home unbathed in their underwear and mathematically give their money away and they will have no money to come to Vegas with and waste on all the crap that Vegas is trying to offer them since gambling will be ubiquitous....as it is practically now.....which is why Vegas is struggling so much recently.....because the ONLY thing that set Vegas apart or made it attractive is now practically everywhere

even if they believe people actually come to Vegas just for the clubs, the restaurants, and the dining every place on earth with a more desirable location can easily emulate that and there are little if any legal changes that need to take place to build shopping, clubs, and restaurants......and clearly the shopping, clubs and restaurants and "resort" aspect are not cutting it because the major new attractions in the two areas of the USA that used to be the only places to gamble are struggling mightily with that concept.....Revel in AC has only gone broke twice now and Cosmo really has already gone broke once when it was being built and Dutch Bank had to take it over to finish it and they are still losing money every quarter one after the other

4. if even a small part of what this writer wrote about comes true I would predict that Vegas is a broke, boarded up, dirt poor, drying up, waterless wasteland with only a hand full of casinos left and a whole lot of vacant and needing to be bulldozed

Adelson no matter what you think of him personally (I like him just fine) clearly understands that online gaming will be a disaster for Vegas and really for society in general and I am not sure where Wynn stands on it (I know he has moved to make some partnerships), but I believe he is really not for it, but he is not going to just sit back and watch everyone else cash in on it as well so he will protect himself (I might be wrong on Wynn, but Adelson is a clear opponent) and Wynn clearly understands that Vegas still depends on gaming as well......and both of them have avoided most every market outside of Vegas and Asia (with one exception for Wynn) and again that is because they are "Vegas" as much as they are "hey we just want to make money off the math challenged any way possible"

when things start hurting from expanded gambling (still happening in the USA sadly) and even more so if internet gaming comes about you will see much of what Vegas has been able to buy/offer/attract be sold off at the auction block left and right.....art collections will hit the auction block, 200 million dollar clubs will close, conservatories will close, dumb thrill rides will close and rot and it will be self perpetuating.....as each one goes the few people that did come just for that will go elsewhere with a better environment (temp, beach, lake, skiing)....the shopping will disappear with the crowds.....same with the restaurants.....and what will you have left......just a place that used to offer something unique and the people that controlled that thought they could expand it everywhere (and now online) and still attract people to a hot desert.....not happening

probably the only chance Vegas would have if the majority of that techno crap that author wrote about happens (the virtual gaming BS) is to go "Amsterdam" on us and throw open the door for smoking weed while gambling and clubbing and eating and at the pool (and in the spa and fitness centers) and make small amounts of coke a ticket offense paid pretty much right then (more lax than Amsterdam) and then sweep the junkies into some corner of the city or one of the abandoned hotels or condo projects....the others can be massive solar powered grow rooms

I hate to be so negative on Vegas, but if virtual gaming comes or internet gaming comes it will be a self perpetuating decline for Vegas period and it will not be pretty....there is not a chance in hell it will be people showing up to pay huge money for tunnels and monorails and carnival rides and over priced restaurants and bars while they "get social" with a freaking avatar of some other dolt sitting in Caesars Palace....I mean yea how cool is that I am on an airplane flying into Vegas and playing Texas Holdem with my girlfriend VS a 5 guy sausage fest paying $3.95 + a $39 dollar resort fee to rotate who gets to sleep on the floor of the Q ....VEGAS BABY!!!!!! WHHHHOOOOOOO!!!.....where is my $500 dollar a plate sushi!!!

This is the part I disagree with the most. Millennials may be wrapped up in their digital devices, but they also seek "unplugged" experiences as well and probably increasing quantities as their routine lives become more plugged in.

What this means is that "live" casino games may actually increase in popularity rather than decrease. One observation I've made on my last trip is that social table games like craps and blackjack are jam packed with young folks whereas slots are more commonly populated with the grey hairs.

It wouldn't surprise me if casino's had to reinvent themselves as their older customers die off and actually go back to the days where live gaming was center stage and slots were just a distraction for greenhorns and tenderfoots.

If these casinos want to survive competition with digital entertainment, they'll need to embrace the "live" aspect of casino gaming in order to differentiate rather than trying to go all digital in order to merely imitate. My local casino has both automated and live table games. The automated games are usually a ghost town. I've seen this in Vegas as well. I don't think these new devices are doing as well compared to traditional games as people might have first thought.

A few years ago all these big gaming companies showed off all their people free table games, and it was shot down. People come to vegas for the social interactions. YEs there are those people who would rather play online, but as far as vegas going with that future in the next 10-15 years, I doubt it.

 

I'm still p*ssed at Boyd for blowing up the Stardust in a lemming-jump of greed!

 

i agree its dumb,if he wrote this 30 years ago he would think casinos would only have table games today and no slots since slots werent popular back then and he would think older people today would want heavy metal and grunge rock bands everywhere since thats what was popular when they were in there 20s or 30s.

maybe he is one of those sad sacks in his 50s or 60s that still thinks he's 20 and walks around in basketball jerseys and long shorts like teenagers wear thinking he looks cool but really just looks pathetic because most people mature and get interested in different things when they get older but he never did.

 

what a joke of an article. btw, there are "virtual" dealers now, you see the machines in many casinos, you know, the cute perky buxom blonde or the big busted asian girl or hot brunette. yeah, we can really see that the machines are really busy (sarcasm). cutting edge technology, a lot of it is available now, internet gambling, amusement parks. We still have to see if the ferris wheel is a success or a failure (I vote failure, not that it won't be busy or profitable, just that IMHO it won't bring in the gambling customers as anticipated). crapless craps, automated craps and roulette machines, all going on now with limited results.

Someone, they said that vegas was doomed when they opened the reservation casinos all over. they also said that vegas was doomed with the net gaming. while some of the action did go to those places it didn't kill the vegas machine (and won't IMHO).

you have to also understand, people go to vegas to get away from it all. Esp if you have a SO, a vegas trip allows you to a refuge from your humdrum life at home. For Hawaii people vegas allows us to get "off the rock" so even if (as you say) a lot of vegas fails (esp the clubs, etc.) it will still be a draw to many.

It is very funny as they keep coming up with these predictions that are out there. Vegas IMHO will probably be around in my lifetime, going through the ups and downs as it always has, going through different "reincarnations" to fit the needs of the current crowd, or so they think.

 

Aw c'mon Dmr its been six years. Time to move on. They Fu*ked up, but life and Vegas move on.

10-12 years ago we got fed up with the staff at Stardust and moved downtown. We haven't looked back and we probably stayed at the Dust for 14-15 years.

Was it a bad business decision, YES! But obviously they didn't consult the Magic Eight Ball to know what was coming. For you kids, Google it!

I don't know. I'm almost 61 and I guess I didn't know it is still around. Is it? I assumed that was a thing of my youth back in the 60s.
