I was walking through the Mirage last week. They have a dealer with autism. Her name is Marianne? Mary Beth? or something like that. She is petite, with short black hair and braces.

When I was there she was dealing $10 blackjack.

If you get a chance, you should sit at her table for a session. It's quite an experience. I never saw any dealer be so precise with her card placement, chip handling, etc. You will question if she is human or robot.

Actually, I'm not convinced she isn't a robot. But seriously, she is very sweet, and a very competent dealer.

Whenever she breaks, she will talk to herself saying "I'm so sorry boss, please do not fire me. I will try to do better next time boss."

That is awesome. I didnt see her but I played at Mirage last weekend. The main dealer at my table was an older guy and his hands were shaking really bad. He dealt very slowly. He was very nice and after the first shoe when he was shuffling I said, "You are hands are shaking, are you scared of me taking all your money?" He said, "heck no! I am just old". We both got a good laugh out of it and he turned out to be a great dealer and nice guy!

I didn't see her when I was there. She'd have to be pretty high functioning -- close to aspergers vice autism. Before anyone gives me crap for saying that, my son has autism and there's no way he could work in that environment in any function.

I saw a show on tv about how companies will hire people with aspergers to do testing on their websites. big sites like amazon and the like where they have thousands of webpages.

i guess these folks are super good at finding minute details that most would normally miss and can do it all day without going batty.

very cool. Sounds like it would be a great for for a casino.

I was gambling at the MGM Grand Detroit last weekend and people at the Blackjack Switch table were talking about a dealer in Vegas at the Mirage with autism and how entertaining and competent she was.

They said she would occasionally talk to herself and catch it and say, "Stop talking to yourself. They think you're weird when you do that."

I work for an agency that delivers large scale websites for clients such as Amazon (although not Amazon). We tend to do user testing these days. Either in a room (where we stand behind a one way mirror and scream at people who can't hear us for not getting our designs or through a website such as www.whatusersdo.com - the results can be astounding.

I had a suspicion I knew who you were talking about and then with the physical description I can say I have sat at her table.

I don't think she's autistic, I think its closer to some combination of obsessive compulsive and social anxiety. I think the talking to herself is the social anxiety. When she took over at the table it took me a minute to realize that she wasn't new at her job, that she just had some kind of issue. She's high functioning whatever she has and does a fantastic job with everything but speed. I imagine it has to bother the pit and the eye in the sky, given that the table slows to a relative crawl (at least when I was there), but nontheless, she doesn't seem to make mistakes and its nice to see one of the casinos give someone with some problems a chance and I'm happy she's still there.

I am not a doctor, but I didn't get the impression she was autistic. I just thought she was really slow and maybe OCD. Like REALLY slow. And her table banter was really squeeky and bizarre. The whole table was looking around at each other not knowing what was going on.

Now that I know what the deal is, I may give her another chance, but I swore to avoid her at all costs before I knew this.

And now I feel bad for calling her 'Gamble Me Elmo' after she left, but man... that voice....

Yeah, personally I know nothing about autism, but when she went on break the pit critter approached the table and let us know she was autistic.

Autism has a very wide spectrum (literally), so it's very possible. They often have other issues/characteristics like OCD, fears, etc...

Amazing that they're working around those issues, and hopefully she's able to keep the table moving. Sadly with the high rate of Autism births, there's going to be more people that need extra consideration when hiring.

A local market hires special needs people to bag, and I drive farther to support them.

As a noob here, maybe I'm off on the culture of this particular message board, but I don't think it's cool whatsoever to discuss a casino employee in this manner, ESPECIALLY by name, even if it is laudatory. Other boards would at least edit the employee's name out of a post, and it's likely that this entire thread would get deleted.

Sorry if my words are inflammatory, but unless you know this person's medical history....

You may have a point....I don't know. I started the thread, and went back a re-read my comments and I think its harmless, but I could be wrong.

Knowing she is autistic, good chance people will be more patient with her than they otherwise would be. Maybe that's why the pit critter let us know she was autistic.

Perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned her name, but not sure I did anyway- don't really remember what her name was. Still harmless in my view.

This was a very smart move on their part. Might seem like a bad idea to some, but I think even having some sort of indication below her badge might not be a bad idea. Would potentially evoke more patience.
