Very Late Low Roller May 11-15 TR

Hey,
Thought I would give you guys a bit of a review of our experience at the Fremont Hotel and Casino. My Fiancée and I stayed at the Fremont from Saturday May 11 to Wednesday May 15 in a king room.
May 11 -Upon arriving at 8:00pm there was no line up to check in, I attempted and was rebuffed trying the "$20 dollar trick" as expected. However my request for a high floor room (had read about Fremont noise) was accepted and we were given a room on the 14th floor. The room was as expected (I did my research on both LVMB and Tripadvisor) smallish but seemed clean and the bed was nice, we didn't plan to spend a lot of time in the room anyway. We cranked the A/C to high and were out for the night with my wallet stocked with all my ACG coupons for downtown. We hit up a few different casinos and used some free play with no big wins. Then we had supper at Magnolia’s in the 4 Queens on a 2 for one coupon. I had the prime rib and Wanda had the half rack of ribs, delicious. When we returned to the room around 2:00am I made sure to close the wooden blinds as best as they would close (Which was not very well) and noticed the room was still quite warm for me (checked the thermostat 70 degrees). I would always rather have my room to cold than too hot.
May 12 - At approximately 9:00am I woke up to practically full daylight in the room, the crappy wooden slat blinds did almost nothing to block the light (don’t bother thinking about taking any pictures of the excellent view unless your camera is small enough to fit between the wooden slats). Oh well I'm up I might as well grab a shower and head down for a coffee. Hop in the shower and the shower head is grossly crusted with calcium and lime deposits. Actually, the overall cleanliness of the bathroom definitely left something to be desired.Try not to think about it Shower up and head out for the day. Head down to Dunkin’ for a coffee on my club card a payback for all my hard earned dollars lost, no go “we don’t accept club cards” bummer! Have a great day gambling, shopping, eating, and taking in the sights and sounds of the downtown. We had a two for one coupon for burgers at Binnions. The burgers and fries were top notch. Later on we hit up the paradise buffet on a two for one, gotta love the fresh sushi station! Then back out to the strip for more drinks and a short trip to Glitter Gulch. I really hope the girls are hotter and actually dance on days that aren’t Sundays. Rather than the hurtin’ bunch we saw that basically crawled around begging for ones to be stuffed into their thongs. My fiancé and I agreed that maybe two max of the ten girls we saw “dance” were at least attractive. Hit up American Coney Island for a chilli dog and chilli cheese fries, (As seen on M vs. F) good drunk food. Get back to our room around 4:00am to a wall of heat. The A/C had kicked out and the heat had kicked in, the thermostat was maxed at 90 degrees at 4 in the morning! Called the front desk and they promised to send maintenance right away. 15 min later and maintenance is there working away, good right. Well 30 min into the repair with no end in sight we decide to call the front desk and see if we can change rooms. No go, all that they have are smoking rooms available. Finally around 5:30am the A/c is back on and slowly cooling the room off. As the maintenance man gets ready to leave he says the A/C is always pretty crappy and recommends that if we like a cooler room not to get one on the top floor. I never heard that recommendation before now, probably because most hotels A/C is good enough to compensate.
May 13 - So we sleep for 3.5 hours and I'm off to go get the rental car, YAY! The rental procedure was relatively painless at the Golden Nugget’s Budget rental desk and in less than a half hour I had keys in hand for my fully loaded Chev Malibu (rented with a gift certificate I bought with air miles). Load up on snacks and water at Walgreens and we are off to Red Rock Canyon. Only being a half hour from Vegas Red Rock is a great half day trip. Saw some wild donkeys, a bunch of lizards, some excellent pictographs and petro glyphs only short hikes from the parking areas. Which was great since the afternoon high of 103 was pretty damn warm. We leisurely cruised the 13 mile loop and headed back to the city. On the way back Wanda decided that we should try Lola’s (From triple D) for a late lunch. So we navigated to the rough area of Lola’s without an exact street address and missed the turn. No big deal we’ll just swing down the next street and come in the back way. Well there is no back way just…. Rick’s restorations! So we pull in and who do I see but Rick loading up a truck. So I hop out and get some directions from the man himself, seemed like a very nice guy. As we left the parking lot we saw him taking some pics with some other fans. Always cool to meet someone you watch on TV. With Ricks directions we make it to Lola’s no problem and are seated right away. I ordered the soft shell crab po’ boy and Wanda had the Crawfish etouffe’. After we ordered a guy came in and ordered the crawfish boil (it was not on the menu) and I was kind of disappointed I hadn’t had the opportunity to order the same. Both our meals were good but nothing to write home about. Then back to the hotel for a nappy poo. After our nap we headed back to the plaza to check out our slot free play rebate and were pleasantly surprised to find out that we had earned 50 dollars in free play $25 each of the next two days. Club card loaded up with 25 free dollars we hit up good old Texas tea and on a $15 free play investment made $120 I believe. Then we used our remaining $10 bucks of free play in the Beverly Hillbillies machine and won another $100. Jackpot! Hahahaha. Showtime, we hit up the Tix 4 Tonight booth and somehow decide on Rack and Roll at the D? The show was actually quite entertaining, the women were beautiful and some even seemed to be classically trained dancers. The comedian/ impressionist that worked the intermissions was good and very funny. After the show back to the Plaza for you guessed it a buy one get one meal at hash house. I had the chicken and waffles, delish as usual, and Wanda had the Aloha sandwich which she enjoyed. Bedtime
May 14 – Go speak to the front desk about our A/C issue looking for some compensation and get Nothing, Nada, Zilch. The guy offers to trade us rooms now but I decline as it is the last day of our trip. Walk away disappointed. Head to the beef jerky store to buy some snacks for the day, man is that place awesome! Spent like $40 on jerky, dried kiwis, wasabi trail mix, sunflower seeds, liquorish, and other delish treats. Grab the car from the valet and we are off to Valley of Fire. It’s pretty much the same as Red Rock just bigger and therefore better. Way more pictographs and petro glyphs than Red Rock, for me Petro glyph canyon trail down to mouse’s tank is a must see. It was awesome to see all those glyphs in such a short walk! Took lots of pics and headed back to the city. Enroute we decided to stay on the interstate and hit up Silverton and Bass pro shops. Vegas Bass pro is very similar to ours in Calgary but with a few different mounts. Like the giant Giraffe. We did a little shopping then just a short walk over to the Silverton to use our two for one buffet coupon. Seasons buffet was really nice and we even agreed that it was nicer that the paradise with the exception of the fresh sushi section which Seasons does not have. Then back to the Golden nugget to drop off the rental and back to the Fremont to shower up for our last night in Vegas. We wander down to the Plaza to play the last of our 48 hour free play rebate and while there get offered extremely cheap tickets to see the Centerfolds of Magic show, so I cave and buy the tix. The show was fun, not as good as rack and roll but good. The former centerfold that was the “ringmaster” was very funny and personable. I even got pulled up on stage for the old guillotine trick. That alone was worth the $30 dollar investment. Later we walked back to American Coney Island scarfed a couple chilli dogs, watched a group of street entertainers play some Metallica on a couple of electric bases (Awesome!!!), then hit the hay.

All in all we had a great trip, saw a couple ”shows”, ate some great food, saw the desert, and with the exception of the A/C issue had a fantastic time. As for the Fremont, I would not recommend the Fremont casino to any of my friends unless they got an absolutely amazing price. Now don’t peg me wrong I am no room snob. I have stayed at such “low end” establishments as the Excalibur and Circus Circus, which I would definitely recommend over the Fremont. Maybe it works for some of you and maybe my view was skewed by our A/C problem but I definitely would not stay again without an absolutely amazing offer.

 

That showerhead is just gross.

Forget being under air conditioned in LV in the Summer. I'd pick another place too.

I haven't spent too much time in the Fremont casino, but do love Dunkin' Donuts, that would lure me in for a quick visit.

Ughhhhh to the room air conditioning issues........no way my menopausal or even pre-menopausal self could handle that; you and Wanda are definitely good sports. If the a/c didn't 't send me running to the comforts of the strip, that shower head would have. I think I may have officially become a room snob over the years of business and pleasure travel.
Any photos from your day trips? I've also become a casino/strip lizard and rarely venture away any longer....would love to see then. You and Wanda packed a lot in to your trip and sounds like you really enjoyed yourselves!

 

That showerhead is gross but it's also quite norm.

I remember on my last trip in June 2013 my room at the Bellagio had the same problem with the grim and lime caked on showerhead.
