Just booked my first stay at Mandarin Oriental for a Vegas visit in a few weeks. Never stayed there before and not sure exactly what to expect.

I booked a strip view room under their free night offer. What kind of views does the hotel have and what should I ask for to get the best view?

My last Vegas trip was at a wraparound suite at Cosmo with an east & south strip view - half way up on the east tower and it was amazing. I probably shouldn't expect anything as awesome but it seems like there are many different types of strip views available at MO and just wanted to make sure I asked for the best kind since we actually do spend a decent amount of time in the room while in Vegas.

What's their fitness center like? I mostly do free weights. I'm fine with machines but was hoping they have a decent selection since I noticed many hotel fitness center focus on cardio equipment and may have limited (if any) weights options.

Also, I usually ask for complimentary upgrades depending on the resort. Any tips / advice for MO? If there are paid upgrades, do they typically offer those and what's worth upgrading to and how much do they usually ask?

And finally, I'm not a big gambler but I like being able to go downstairs and have a casino right there. I heard that Aria or Monte Carlo are about a 5 minute walk away. Any thoughts on distance? I've stayed at TheHotel and Four Seasons before which are non gaming but that kinda doesn't count since as soon as you walk outside the lobby you're already right at the Mandalay Bay casino.

Thanks in advance for any tips or advice!

Can't comment on the MO. But your walk to Aria is short and you have a free tram to Bellagio.

It's an uber-luxury property with some great restaurants and no casino. there was a recent trip on the mandarin in the trip report forum.

Make sure you check out the Mandarin Bar. Some of the best views in all of Las Vegas.

Can anyone go to this bar, or do you have to be a guest at the Mandarin?

Given the MO's location, the higher the better. Not only are there better views, but since it's right up against the Las Vegas Blvd and all the Crystals-bound traffic, it'll just be a quieter stay.

Definitely don't expect the same view as what you got at The Cosmopolitan. I stayed in one of their Strip View Suites right at the apex of the building, and while it was great, I'm pretty sure it can't beat what you had at the Cosmo.

I never took advantage of their fitness center, but I passed by and it looked more than adequate. Great, new looking equipment. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

As for the upgrade, we went to celebrate my partner's birthday on our trip to the MO and got squat with any comp offers. Without a casino to recoup their generosity, it seems they're not very likely to offer anything gratis. When I went, we booked two nights in a Mandarin Premier and our final night in the Strip View Suite thinking they might just bring our first two nights into the suite since we were set to transfer into there anyway - nope! They offered a paid upgrade, but the price wasn't any cheaper than what was offered at booking.

Finally, I'm rather much in the same boat. Aria, Monte Carlo and even Cosmo are pretty close, but I still found it kind of off-putting from the Vegas experience. Even though I'm not a huge gambler either, I kind of missed being able to walk out of an elevator into all of the ruckus.

All in all, if you're looking to get treated like you matter, the Mandarin is great. In the end, while I couldn't really justify the value of it, I found that they made aspects of my trip much easier and relaxing. Take big advantage of their concierge, they can set you up nicely with whatever you might need. When it comes to the staff overall, almost nothing is asking too much. It won't be the typical high energy, rambunctious sort of Vegas trip, but if you booked the Mandarin, I'm sure you weren't really aiming for that anyway. The word "oasis" comes up a lot when MO is mentioned, and I really couldn't agree more. Happy trip!

Thanks everyone, especially AusTex11 for the thorough response and advice! :) I looked at views on room77.com and Cosmo sure has them beat in most cases but they're still nice, and I'm looking forward to the Mandarin Oriental oasis experience for the first time!

As I mentioned in previous threads, try to book your hotel reservations through Fine Hotels and Resorts (if you're an AMEX Platinum or Centurion cardholder) or a Virtuoso agent since you're entitled to a few benefits.

If booking through FHR, you get these benefits:
    1. Noon check-in upon arrival, when available
    2. Room upgrade upon arrival, when available
    3. Daily breakfast for two people
    4. 4PM late check-out
    5. $100 spa services credit to be used during your stay.

*Sometimes they run a promotion, where you can get the 3rd or 4th night free if you book 2 or 3 nights.

If you book through a Virtuoso agent, you get these benefits:
    1. Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
    2. Continental breakfast daily, for up to two in-room guests
    3. $100 spa services credit, to be utilized during your stay.

Sometimes the FHR and/or Virtuoso rates are cheaper/equal to the hotel's best available rate, so you can save hundreds of dollars by booking through these outlets.
