Did anyone else see the Living Social offer last week for the Golden Nugget? It is for July onward, and requires a $5 a day "Fremont Street Experience" fee be paid at check-in. Sounds like the start of a resort fee, or at least a trial balloon. Check it out:

    https://www.livingsocial.com/escapes/723186?ref=fb_share

Here's the relevant text from the offer:

"Guests arriving on or after July 1, 2013 will incur a daily $5 Fremont Experience Fee plus applicable taxes added to the room rate."

Interesting. $5 a day isn't a big bite, but by calling it a "Fremont Street Experience" fee they don't associate it with the hotel and avoid having to offer any perks to justify it.

That's so disappointing. :(. Has anyone called and asked what is included in the $5 fee?

Probably just "access" from the hotel to Fremont Street.

I wonder what would happen if you decline the FSE? ("Won't need that, I'll just use the side entrance.")

I called. Nothing is included in the $5 fee.

Well, they say it's for all the "free" entertainment, maintenance, clean-up, etc.

And to top it all off I was told "This $5 p/day fee is totally separate from your room charge and taxes. It's not a resort fee, we never impose resort fees on our guests."

She also said she was a bit surprised that I was complaining and that "the fee has been well received by our guests, when told of the charge."

I have a room booked at the GN in early July. I made the reservation in April so I will not be charged the new FSE fee. But this will be the last time I stay at the GN.

Yes, here we go with the same double-talk CET used when they rolled them out. "Because guests demanded it". "For your convenience". "To serve you better".

Vegas is sucking harder every day. How dare Nugget impose a fee for FSE when it is ripped up beyond belief and barely passable? Those zip line pylons are hideous and have completely ruined the "Experience". :grrr:

I knew that the phone survey was a bad omen.

If I am going to pay any "type" of fee, I will stay on the strip or at the Rio.

Sad, because we like the Nugget and loved the fact they had no extra fee's.

Oh well, one unhappy customer and hubby and I will not stay there anymore. And I know, they really don't care. LOL

I'm sure it won't have any impact, but perhaps if everyone continued to bombard their Facebook page asking people to cancel their reservations because of this ludicrous fee. We'd at least make a little noise and get a few people to cancel their reservations. I posted.

This really sucks. Calling it a FSE fee I wonder if every FSE hotel will charge the same fee. But then the guests staying downtown will subsidize all those just swinging by at night.

FSE is nice, purely for the fact that its a good atmosphere and you can walk in relative peace (still many beggers and 'artists').

I know the hotels pay for it. I doubt they pay 5 bucks per night per guest. I could barely understand the NYE fee they charged. That said I went out for 5 minutes and had enough as it was ear drum piercing loud music so I just went back inside. All this ended up being a mere inconvenience.

I am going to try to maintain a bit of calm. I notice that this "fee" is only on the livingsocial "deal". Has anyone actually booked a room, via GN's website? I went and played around with a booking, stopping short of actually booking a room. I did not see any mention of the FSE fee. Nor was it on my estimated cost. Perhaps, at this time, the livingsocial deals are going to be subsidizing the work. All-in-all, I think it stinks, but, does it apply to all bookings? Anyone, Bueller?

The fee is posted on their online booking site. One must scroll down the page to see it. This is bupkis.

It's becoming abundantly clear that the city of Las Vegas is doing everything it can to discourage repeat visitors. A Fremont Street fee is basically a charge to access the sidewalk. Combine that with resort fees, live entertainment taxes, city taxes, state taxes, convenience fees (whatever the hell that is), box office fees, power surcharges, internet access fees, fitness facility fees, franchise fees, box office phone operator assistance fees (thank you, Wynn), penalties for staying longer than 7 days (El Cortez), early check-in fees, extra charges for two queens vs. one king, pool access charges, tap water surcharge (Border Grill at Mandalay Bay), $3 surcharge to use a credit card in their taxis, outrageous ATM fees...and no doubt much more to come. Combine that with all the fees and hassle that the airlines put you through, and it becomes a great big "why bother anymore?".

Yeah, a Fremont Street Experience fee is jumping the shark. I'm thinking that overnight road trips are the new way to go. Bye bye, Vegas, it was fun.:Þ

BTW - someone recently sent me a private message asking why I think that activity on this board has slowed down so much. Perhaps this is why. I'm pretty much done posting as well.

Las Vegas has just become a great big turn-off. :peace:

FSE FEE...C'mon give me a break...

Come on people, don't even give the Golden Nugget the satisfaction that you acknowledge this fee as a " FSE " fee.. Its a RESORT FEE..
You can put lipstick on a pig, but its still a pig.
Do the math people, 2+2 = 4, $ 5.00 a day will be added to your room rate = resort fee.

My guess is that this is a "trial balloon" by the GN for implementing a general resort fee. It's small, and it's applicable only to the Living Social deal. And by calling it a "Fremont Street Experience" fee they don't have to provide anything additional to justify it. It follows their spring survey regarding resort fees. Other FSE casinos would be adding this fee as well if it were truly a fee being imposed by the FSE corporation.

Only a hunch, but if they don't get much negative reaction from the Living Social crowd, I expect we'll see it imposed across the board. And $5 would just be the first step. If the Plaza is getting away with $10, would the GN really stick with $5 (again, only my speculation)?

The Vegas economy really must be improving, with Caesars' properties implementing large resort fees this spring, and FSE going from being a place where you got FSE discount coupons to one where the downtown hotels are starting to impose their own resort fees.

To all: This is NOT just a Living Social deal. The $5 fee applied to all GN guests starting July 1st; if your reservation was made after June 5th? June 8th? Not sure?

I assume the fee will be waived to those that receive comped rooms. But all other guests will be charged $5 p/nt. And yes, I called to confirm. Spoke to a manager.

    Sucks, don't it.

Thanks. After reading some other boards, I too found out that the fee is for all. Hmmm...How about I promise the GN that I will not look at the FSE whenever it plays? Something I try to avoid altogether anyway. Think they'll let me slide on the fee? That is a horrendous way to go. We like the GN. Perhaps I will have to start looking elsewhere. Steve Wynn, what did you do to us? I never liked the canopy being put up from day one.

I hate hidden costs as much as the next person but we knew this was coming from several other threads. The profit they make off resort fees is enough to offset the lost revenue or else majority of the strip wouldnt be doing this.

Just move on to the next hotel until they start doing it too. Personally Im not going to let it bum me out or keep me from going/staying downtown.

Apparently I'm the stupid one for not embracing and being happy about this fee. :confused2: I posted on The Golden Nugget facebook page about boycotting and not paying the fee. The responses really surprised me. Almost all said that they would be happy to pay the fee and would be willing to pay a $20 resort fee.

I just don't get that these people find nothing wrong with being basically robbed of $5 a day. Am I crazy for not being willing to pay a fee that entitles me to Nothing???

You're not crazy, but maybe a little too innocent. You do know how easy it is to load up a facebook page with positive comments, right?
