Which hotel/casinos properly should have 'The' in the front of their name? (As in "I'm staying at _____________".)

Sticking to the Strip and near-Strip:

    The Stratosphere
    The Las Vegas Hotel
    The Riviera
    Circus-Circus
    The Encore
    The Wynn
    The Pallazzo ??
    The Venetian ??
    Treasure Island
    The Mirage
    Caesars Palace
    Casino Royale
    Harrah's
    The Quad
    Margaritaville
    The Flamingo
    Bally's
    Paris
    Planet Hollywood
    The Palms
    The Rio
    The Gold Coast
    The Orleans
    The Bellagio ??
    The Cosmopolitan
    Aria
    The Monte Carlo ??
    New York, New York
    The Excalibur
    The Luxor
    The Mandalay Bay ??
    The MGM Grand
    The Tropicana

Feel free to correct my list. (?? I really couldn't tell.)

Most of those don't have a proper "The".

For example none of the MGM props except The Mirage.

    Neither Wynn nor Encore.

Probably others too, you can check each individually.

I think it's a matter of preference. very few of them actually have The in the name and even the ones that are commonly referred to with a The, when you talk to people that work there, they don't use The.

When I was a teen, my mother added "The" to all the bands I listened too.

    The Night Rangers
    The Def Leppard
The Policemen (not even close, ma)
    The Zeppelin (my favorite)
    etc. :haha:

I say a bunch of these without the "The". Like shifter said...i think it is just preference

    I say:
    The Stratosphere
    The Riviera
    Circus-Circus
    Encore
    Wynn
    Pallazzo
    The Venetian
    Treasure Island
    The Mirage
    Caesars Palace
    Casino Royale
    Harrah's
    The Quad
    Margaritaville
    Flamingo
    Bally's
    Paris
    Planet Hollywood
    The Palms
    The Rio
    The Gold Coast
    The Orleans
    Bellagio (or The B)
    The Cosmopolitan (or Cosmo)
    Aria
    Monte Carlo ??
    New York, New York
    Excalibur
    Luxor
    Mandalay Bay ??
    MGM Grand
    The Tropicana

    Very interesting!!

Its not just "preference" whether or not there is a proper The in a hotel's name. There either is or there isn't.

It's like saying its just preference whether its called Chicago or The Chicago.

I don't think I have ever put a "the" in any hotel's name. Maybe The Hotel would get it, but since I've never stayed there, I have never referenced it in a post.

That list needs a lot of blue penciling. If it's not part of the proper name in most instances it is not need or warranted. Here are some good tips, and as always in English there are exceptions that don't really make sense (Ghana not the Ghana, the Netherlands not Netherlands).

Funny, but depending on the context, sometimes I insert a "the" and sometimes I don't. Examples? You bet!

"I've never gambled at Bellagio" versus "You should try to get by the Bellagio to see the fountains."

"I hear the Tropicana has a great pool." versus "MGM is right across the street from Tropicana, isn't it?"

...and, whenever using casino nicknames, the "the" almost always seem to be necessary:
"the Ho", "the Dust", "the Slipper", "the Riv", "the Nugget", "the El-Co"...

Whether or not a casino officially has the word “The” in its proper name doesn’t really have much to do with whether or not people say “The” (or, I suppose it would be “the” in some instances).

OP: Are you asking how we say/write it? (This was my original assumption, but based on some of the responses, I’m not sure now.)

Interesting thread; got me thinking. The way I differentiated it was if somebody asked me where I was staying, would I say the (insert name) or just (insert name).

I would say the in front of:
    MGM Grand
    Monte Carlo
    Mirage
    Flamingo
    Venetian
    Palazzo
    Wynn
    Stratosphere
    Palms
    Hard Rock

Yes, I realize the irony in that I didn't put 'the' in front of any of them right now.

I also think it just depends on the context you're saying or hearing it in.

TheHotel at Mandalay Bay and The D are the only two hotels formally using "The" in advertisements. I also include The to describe The California (Hotel & Casino).

As far as the strip goes, I put "the" in front of Excalibur, MGM, Monte Carlo, Bellagio, Mirage, Wynn, Encore, Riviera, Venetian, and Palazzo. Of course, I'm from Buffalo originally, and we put "the" in front of all sorts of things that it doesn't belong in front of (especially roads....there is no 90, 190, 290, or 990 in Buffalo...but definitely "the 190," "the 290," and so on haha)...

Yea, I was asking how people use it in conversation. I'm pretty sure only a few have 'the' in their official name, (like The Las Vegas Hotel&Casino (formally Hilton), The Quad, The D. Even Mirage seems to not really include it officially.

Technically I would only put The in front of THEhotel. Some names do flow better with The in front of them...Wynn, Strat, Hard Rock, Quad and Riviera come to mind...when reading hotel reviews on TA the one thing that drives me up a wall is reading THE PARIS....I really wish they had a dislike button specifically for that. :confused2: If I ever hear someone say The Bally's in person, I just may have to slap them. :wink2:

"The Mirage" is how the sign reads on the building.

    Outside of that:

    The Palms
    The Orleans
