I got back to the hotel last night and realized that I wanted to walked past the Downtown Grand and Gold Spike to see what was up. So after breakfast,I came up to use the bathroom and went walking. The Gold Spike was alive with workers. They were powerwashing the walkways, painting the entrance concrete stop as sever people inside were moving about cleaning and so on. Above the door was "Downtown's Something Bar." Sorry I was past it and couldnt read it from across the street. The parking lot was fenced in and full of work vehicles so it looks like it will be open for business soon. The side streets were closed off and sidewalks were closed so I had to walk on the south side. Next was the Downtown Grand. While I could see some workers above, the entire casino was being studded with metal studs including the outside along Ogdon and 2nd St. Inside was particianed and they were wiring, installing heat/AC duckword etc. I walked up to the Mob Museum but didn't feel like touring so went left and walked by the old bus transfer center. It as closed off but lots of cars parked there. Across the parking lot there is a parking lot that has a farmer's maket there on friday. Not much posted so i don't know if it is every friday or just the one passed.

It was good to see lots of construction going on for a change, people working and two places getting ready to open. GS looks like a week or two. Old Lady Luck I would think maybe in the fall.

A few days ago the Punk Rock Bowling and Music Festival confirmed 3 pool parties at the Gold Spike, so apparently the pool/bar will be open for business by Memorial Day weekend.

The Pool Parties are free of charge, and always interesting and fun. If you're in town for the weekend and want a little taste of the festival, you should swing by.

    The information is located here:

You know I enjoyed my one visit even though much of it I had read about previously because of I'm kind of a mob/vegas nerd. But how many times do you go there in one year? Just curious.

Joe, we went to Vegas last Aug. Decided to go a little earlier this year and we'll be able to utilize the yearly pass. We normally vacation once a year.

Thank You! I really appreciate the way you wrote this... I tire of the negative reports. I see the construction and think jobs, improvement, investment... others see noise, dust, inconvenience and... say it ain't so... CHANGE!!!

With the title of this thread, I thought this was going to be another "walking down fremont area is scary" or "I can't get over how dangerous downtown is" Thanks for the report, Jimbo.

    lol

I expected the same thing when I clicked.

I stayed at el cortez earlier this month and I walked up and down ogden several times to get away from the noise and crowds on fremont and all was good.

I was also amazed how busy they were at the downtown grand site.

Talking about construction, I was there last week, walked from Fremont to the mob museum on 3rd. Wow! Things are a changin'. There already is an interesting mix of restaurant and bars there, but they are building more stuff. And the Lady Luck redo is much grander scale than I was envisioning.

I guess with the success of Fremont East, investors realize folks will step out from under the Fremont Street Experience to do things. It's all good to me.

I remember being very skeptical of the Grand actually moving forward (finally) with upgrading and opening. I would have never guessed the type of expansion and improvement they have taken on. Very good things for Ogden!

Yeah I get that a lot, but then that denigrates my right to my opinion! I saw a couple posts where folks stated they were not going to follow thru with their plans to stay downtown because of the negative reports. I feel it's important that others weigh-in a bit as well, lest the "negative-nelliies" on the board rule the thread!

You're response is like the old "America... LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT" crowd... I'm as knowledgeable about Las Vegas as anyone on this board, but see things a little different than some... I'm not alone.

Ha ha, judging by the many negative posts in the downtown changing thread, there are a number of people who feel the opposite of you, many are turned off by the "stripification" of downtown. many liked the "old" downtown and think the changes downtown are only short term irritations and do not like what they see, especially the zappos changes. the bad thing is that the changes may deter the regulars, the people who visit vegas regularly and gamble and spend money. Some feel that the new changes will not really bring in a lot of money, may bring in the younger party crowd who spend money drinking and partying but not as much the machines in the casinos (IMHO), where the old timers are spending hours gambling.

do the "negative nellies" rule the board? possibly, I see a lot of negatives with the quad and will make a comment, especially with the people who have never stayed at the place. as you said, everyone has the right to their own comments (within reason), otherwise the board will be sanitized and boring I guess.
