Neon museum: is it really worthwhile?

I've been looking at their website and find it confusing. Aside from a boneyard tour of broken non-working neon signs, what is there to see at this museum? I also saw that some of their working exhibits of restored signe are on LV Blvd with most being north of Freemont Street. How would you see them at night if you don't have a car?

 

I am signed up for the tour this coming Tuesday, will let you know how it goes and post some pix.

 

I went about a year ago on their one hour daily tour. Whilst it is pretty much just a collection of old signs, the guide gave a good commentary of the history of each defunct casino that each sign had come from.

Unless you're a Vegas Scholar who already knows the whole history of the city then I'd say it was worth a run out.

The signs are better organized and displayed, the tour was a bit longer with more commentary and the visitor center is cool in and of itself (it used to be the lobby of the La Concha).

 

Yes. We visited last year and found it quite informative. You do look at all the old signs however the guides are great at explaining the history of the signs, why particular fonts are used, etc. It is a really nice tour. Well worth it.

This place is on my to do list when Iam in Vegas later this month.

 

I enjoyed it and as others have said the guide explains things well.

I recommend it for Vegas fans. I ended up taking the SDX from center strip and walking from the Fremont area. The walk was fine, it's a bit of a walk but I like to walk. On the way back I caught a bus near the boneyard.

 

I haven't been since 2006 but I thought it was cool. I'd like to go again someday.
If you like snapping photos you can get some pretty artsy shots of the signs.

 

Worth it? We enjoyed it. Don"t quite understand why a museum for neon would close before sundown and have so few lighted signs.

 

I guess it could be boring if you aren't into vegas history. Yes, they are basically a bunch of old neon signs from the past. but the tour guides give a good commentary on the signs and their hotels. If that isn't your thing then you should skip the visit.

There are some of the old signs still in use, some located near the east side of the fremont hotel, some also near the neonopolis. just catch the bus downtown and you can find them. you can also take a bus out to the boneyard.

 

There are also a few lit signs on Las Vegas Blvd heading north from Fremont St and on Femont East. You could bus or taxi to downtown and walk around and see quite a few. You might not want to walk too far north on LVBlvd, though, depending on your comfort level with depressed urban areas.

 

We went in the Fall and enjoyed it very much. It's a bit of a walk from Fremont Street but doable. I would suggest ordering tickets before you go as many of the tours are sold out in advance. We were lucky enough to get two of the few "walk up" tickets available.

 

This is actually a bucket list item for me. Out OD idle curiosity how expensive is it, and can you stay longer than the tour lasts? Thanks.

I think it was 15 or 18 bucks, something like that. They are rather particular about people staying with the tour - safety and all.

 

If you are interested in the history of Vegas, it's a must. The point of the museum is not so much the signs themselves, but retaining a part of Vegas that might otherwise be lost. That's part of the reason that the signs aren't functioning: the cost would be quite prohibitive and it's not really necessary for the mandate of the museum.

If you're not a big Vegas history fan, you may be happier checking out the restored signs in the Fremont Street area at night.

The walk from Fremont to the Boneyard is definitely doable. We took a cab there, then walked back when we realized how close it was. Maybe a 15 minute walk? Not a pretty walk though, as the area is a little depressed.

First I want to than you all for the comprehensive responses. I am all packed and ready to go to Vegas tomorrow morning...YAY!!! After careful consideration of all the comments and reviews I have seen, I am going to take a pass on the tour this time. Perhaps at a cooler time of year when it gets dark earlier I will give it a shot. I may stop at the visitors center and/or tour the working signs that have been restored on north LV Blvd by bus or cab at night. In fact, I unknowingly took photos of the restored Wedding sign with the arrow a few years ago.
