Table Games Craps Buyin Questions

Going to Vegas, first time buying in with a decent bankroll, so I am curious about a few things.

1) If buying in $10k+ is it proper etiquette to use only large denominations, or does it really matter?

2) Do you just throw it down on the table like you would otherwise and wait for chips? Obviously it will take a minute to count the cash, would it be better to buy in somewhere no one is playing and just bring the chips over so as to avoid holding up the game?

I don't have a lot of answers for you but I can't imagine buying in for 10K with less than all hundys.

It wouldn't take that long to count them up at the table, 10 groups of 10.

I'd wait until a hand is over though.

 

A couple points. First, if you buy in elsewhere it's going to be tough to move it over -- they frown on that, in general.

Second, how much do you bet at a time? A lot of guys who buy in for 10K do it in increments. Get what you need to get started and then find a natural lull in the game to get the rest.

But if you want the chips up front, just wait until a seven out and put your money down. There's a natural break in the game there, so nobody will be upset.

 

I don't know about Vegas, but I was playing craps at the Golden Nugget in Laughlin in September when a guy buys in for 10k. Held up the game for a good 5-10 minutes, boxman counted very slowly and in $500 increments, spreading out each $100 individually. I was later told it was procedure for the security cameras to see. Then the boxman wanted a ss#, the guy wouldn't give him one. Then the pit boss came over asking for ss#, guy still wouldn't give his ss#. Guy buying in was a scumbag, very rude to other players and staff. He asks for his 10k back and walks away. About 2 minutes later he comes back and buys in for 5k I think, they give him change then his pager for the restaurant goes off telling him his table is ready, he leaves with his chips and goes to dinner... I hope he choked on it, classless piece of s#@$! Like I said this was Laughlin where this kind of action is uncommon, Vegas is probably a whole different story.

 

Yes! Please do this whether you're buying in for $100 or $100K! Can't believe how many rude pricks just throw their money out there in the middle of a roll. Who am I kidding? Of course I can believe it. People, by and large, are rude picks.

 

The fastest way would be to have a credit line and get a marker. That way it would take the counting of the cash out of the equation and make it a little quicker.

 

I know the OP didn't ask this, and I don't mean to Hijack.......but what's with these aholes who slide right up next to the shooter, so THEY can get the dice next? Not a casino in Vegas USED to let a scumbag like this see the dice, no matter how long the roll was from the guy currently shooting. The dice would pass right by to the guy who is rightfully next to shoot! Now, it seems anyone can pull this move, have their roll, and walk away. Bullshit.

 

Right, but if you're buying in for $500 or $1000 and you're at the end of a table that's not too busy, you can work it off to the side without holding things up if you and the crew are both good. You put the money down between one roll and he gets things started, then he counts it for the box between the next rolls. It's not ideal, but I did it a few times this last trip at the request of the crew and it didn't hold anything up.

 

If they'll let you do it, I would just buy your chips at the cage and have them walk it over to the table.

I DREAM of going to the craps table with THAT kind of $$$$$!!! LOL!!!

 

One thing I would do is be clear what denominations of chips that you would like. I've seen guys buy in at 15K and cause lots of confusion and others that no one even notices that it happened. It is all in being reasonable and communicating with the crew what you want to see in the way of chips.

Everyone bets a little bit different than the next guy or gal--have them give you the chips you'd like upfront instead of having them pushed to you and then needing something different.

mike brings up a good point... if the table is packed then dont just do it in the middle of a roll....
I prefer to get on the end so I can do it if the table is packed its very easy to do that....
I have done it in the middle of a roll before and people get pissed sometimes, sometimes people dont care......

But now that I am much more serious craps player, and if I am shooting I will get pissed if someone does that to me in the middle of a roll

 

So I'm an avid craps player at the higher end. Couple of things is this $10K your whole bankroll? I assume if your buying in at $10K this is not your whole bankroll but I could be wrong.

If this is not your whole bankroll and you are staying at one hotel during your trip and you will gamble mostly at this hotel it might be worth putting at least a portion of your bankroll on account with the cage. I say this because then you can take a marker for $10K which is a whole lot easier than throwing $10K on the table a pissing everyone off.

Being one who plays on markers myself, it is a breeze taking a marker. The pit supervisors know me and when I ask for a marker they give me my chips before even checking the computer. I can start playing right away and then sign the marker when there is a lull in the game.

 

I also think setting up with markers is the way to go, of course if that is your main casino that you plan on playing in.

 

Do not throw 10 grand on table

Do not do that at a BUSY table. It is a SLLLOOOOWWWWWWW count. No NO NO.

If the table is empty, and you want to shoot by yourself, then you can do it and enjoy your moment. Be sure you tell them how you want the chips to. Do you want all black? Do you want some greens? Do you want it all in whites!?!?!?! ( I am sure if you asked for it all in whites they would turn you away)

Find a host or go to the cashier and say you want to put 10 grand into an account. Depending on the table, keep 1 grand for you to wager with. If a 5 buck table, just keep 500.


Then, at the craps table you will tell the pit Boss you have money on account and want to use it. You make them do some work because you will fill out some paperwork to get the money. BUT!!!! You won't slow the table down. Just you and the Pit Boss making some paper love.

At the Cal there is an attractive female pit boss. She is a young Hawaiian lady and curses like a sailor. Although, you won't know she curses like a sailor while she is working.

 

Is there any downside to taking out a marker?

Also, for us newbies who have established gaming history at a hotel, but no marker history, what is the process for getting established?

 

Go to the hotel's website and click on "Marker Application." It's usually on a drop down under 'Casino' or 'Gaming'

If you're going to put your money down in the middle of a roll, you better be betting with it on that roll.
Can't believe when people throw their money down then wait for the hand to be over before betting!
