Are we still thinking Boar's Head Bar or MSS in general? Do you earn the same amount of reward points on the bar top full pay JoB?

How are the Boyd props downtown right now with offers? I heard that MSS was pretty liberal back in the day. Has that changed?

Going to spend some time on my very short trip downtown and was looking to play somewhere enjoyable and just put my play in at one spot.

    Thanks as always!

Yes, the Boar's Bar has 9/6 JOB (full credits), as well as a couple other spots at MSS. The California, Fremont, and the Four Queens also all have 9/6 JOB, some as low as the nickel level.

Check the VPfree web-site for exact locations at each property.

The 4 Queens has FP JOB nickel level near the keno.

Do you get less points on your B-card for playing full pay at the bar tops? I have read online that certain properties dont give the same amount of points for full pay, or is that maybe just those 100+% DB machines?

What is the smallest amount/time of play from a downtown property where you saw some sort of offer that wasn't a discount. Even a weekday night or two free. I am not chasing or playing for one, but hey it wouldn't hurt to play somewhere for a few hours that might pay a small dividend in the end.

Points are the same at the 9/6 JoB as other VP at Boyd properties. If you're looking for easy room comps for a future trip, Four Queens is a better bet. For great drinks, service and atmosphere, MSS Boar's Head Bar is tops.

Agree with Atom, MSS and 4Q are the best places to play VP in Downtown and very easy to get mailers from 4Q with moderate VP play but Boyd has better comps, casinos and amenities for the purpose of establishing a home base.

I really like MSS but a couple of things about the Boar's Bar keep me from making it my favorite VP place over 4Q (and this is just my personal take).

    1) I'm not a beer drinker so the great microbrew selections at MSS are a moot point. Go figure, the time I discovered my love for Downtown coincided with my change in alcohol taste from beer/wine to hard liquor.

    2) My game of choice is DDB and MSS only has 9/5 vs Cal's 9/6. 4Q also has 9/6 along with progressives for both Royals and 4oak. However getting the MSS scratch offs for 4oak are still fun especially if you only play JoB.

    3) Something about the actual bar at Boar's and angle of the VP screen with my seating/positioning isn't quite right for me. It just seems I have to stretch my body a bit more to play VP there (it might be that brass bar near the seats).

The bartenders at both MSS and 4Q have been great to me. Can't really say the same for the Cal or Fremont (nothing bad, just unremarkable).

My only concern about 4Q aside from the lack of amenities is that with the recent Gold Spike/LVC closings my fear is that 4Q/Binions could be next and your VP play for comp purposes might be best used elsewhere. Hope I'm wrong.

Above comments aside, all of these places give you the best value for your VP bankroll. Can't wait to go back next month.

Thank you to both for the detailed responses! 4 Queens is the best bet for more liberal future offers huh? I always thought it was MSS/Cal. Or maybe even D?

I am just making a day trip down there but plan to use my gambling bankroll downtown in one spot.

Not so much a hit and run, but will plan to put a few hours in. I am envious of those you hear play for 20 minutes and get a few weekday nights. Never pans out for me.

I am not playing for the comp, but might as well play in one spot! Thanks again and can't wait to be back on Fremont for a bit.

I agree with Atom and Christian's assessments.

While Binion's hotel is closed, 4 Queens is inviting anyone with a potential of a few hours played per day for comped rooms / VP tournaments, even for play on FP machines. Their rooms are not great, but they are clean. I don't think Terry could close both hotels and stay in business / keep ownership.

Binion's was grandfathered into an exemption related to their full gaming license and their hotel closures. My understanding is you cannot close your hotel and retain your full license, but there appear to be exceptions (such as LVC's temporary seasonal / weekday closures).

Also, my cocktail service at the California was good at the 9/6 JOB machines near the craps table (for players which are not particular whether they are playing bartop or not). My only complaint is the fair/poor BJ rules at Boyd downtown properties (4 queens usually has one decent shoe table open). I stick primarily w/ VP while downtown.

The Downtown Grand appears to actually be on schedule to open later this year based on work and workers hired (though they also owned Gold Spike). They will offer outdoor gaming tables (which should work for most of the year - I'm not sure about May-September). I hope, but I am not optimistic, they will offer either 9/6 JOB or 10/7 DB or decent blackjack. Unless one or two additional (beyond Gold Spike and LVC) casinos close, the downtown occupancy rate gap vs. Strip will continue to increase, keeping room rates low for most dates.

It takes very little play at Four Queens to get room and free play offers. MSS is my preffered place to play, comps aside, but my play there more often results in comp rooms and play at Boyd properties that have more hotel rooms to give away, like Orleans and Gold Coast. I only get offers for rooms at off strip properties that I've already played at, so you might get a different result if you've only ever played the downtown properties.

In the interest of completeness, and full disclosure... El Cortez also has 9/6 jacks. I haven't played at the D since it was Fitzgerald's, so I can't speak for that place. Binion's play also gets easy room offers at 4Q, but there's no full pay to be found.

Not entirely true at MSS. The 9/6 JOB at Boar's Bar, and the two machines on the far north wall will give you the full points ... $1 = 1 point.
HOWEVER, the slant-tops at the south end, with 9/6 JOB (and other full-pay games) have little stickers on them, which state "$3 coin-in = 1 point".

It's weird, I have never gotten any offers ever from the 4 Queens and I play there quite a bit each trip..... I'm going to have to make sure they have my address.

Hah - this is the thing that gets me... you will hear stories of someone dropping a hundred in and getting some free nights, and then people like you who probably puts in more play than the other guy and gets nothing?

I wish I could understand it better. Tough call between putting my play into 4 Queens or MSS.

I will probably just go with the one that has the better atmosphere at the time.

I like the D's atmosphere but I dont think they have any full pay JoB.

Used to stay almost exclusively at MSS downtown but started getting offers from 4 Queens with very modest play there. Even though I now probably put in equal amounts of play between the two properties during my downtown stays, the offers from 4 Queens are better. I detect MSS having tightened up a bit more than 4 Queens in the last few years on low-roller offers.

This is me too, play there as much or more than anywhere and never even get a mailer(did receive one a couple years ago), other places I play far less send them out all year long.

I noticed on my last trip the listings on VPfree were very innacurate, especially with the upstairs casino at the D. I was specifically looking for DDB, and the casino is filled with Full Pay now. I wouldn't be surprised if Full Pay JOB was there as well.

Brings up another point, VP free is terrible for DT listings. I know one casino has had Full Pay JOB for years now, but it still isn't listed at all. Another machine Of DDB pays out 500 for the straight flush as well, and obvious mistake when it was set up.

Yeah it does seem like the listings are a little vague (but for free we can't complain right).

How are the offers for low rollers at the D now compare to 4 queens since the D's upgrade?
