I'm still a week out - and think that I would bet if you select a date and time while I'm in Vegas I could tell you within 500 Yards of where I'll be.

How do you know when you've over-planned a trip ?

I'm one where planning is half the fun, even if the whole thing gets thrown out the window the minute after you arrive.

I try to avoid planning the next "thing" while I'm doing a thing. Like looking forward to a show while I'm at dinner, rather than enjoying the dinner. Then looking forward to gambling at a new casino during the show rather than enjoy the show.

I have to live in the moment.

The only time I actually plan something is if I'm going to a nice dinner, I'll make a reservation a few weeks in advance to get a decent time.

Ditto. I have minute by minute plans. I am always flexible with it but we are generally happiest when we follow it because I have thoughtfly considered all angles.

E.g. When there last weekend, we planned to swim from 2:30 to 3:30, then take a nap before heading out at 5pm for dinner and a show. My SIL and BIL didn't get to our room until 3pm. Thankfully, DH and I took a 20 min snooze waiting for them.

Then, they decided not to swim. They wanted to visit the Strip. We went with them not really realizing how off schedule we were. It was 4:45pm by the time we got back. Barely enough for a quick change to run back out the door. The buffet line ended up being 30 mins longer than expected. So it was rush rush rush to get to our show. It was overall tiring and not the relaxing evening we wanted. I told DH next time we are making a stronger effort to stay on schedule.

You know you've overplanned a Vegas trip when...

You come up with an exact script of what to say at the front desk to the clerk to get that upgraded room!

Second part to that... You have multiple scripts for different scenarios. LOL

I saw both extremes this last trip with the bachelor and bachelorette parties our group had.

The girls planned everything out to 15 increments, inevitably got behind schedule and had to rush through their evening. The girls got everything done they wanted to do, but more of a checklist than an experience.

The guys planned nothing out besides where to meet for dinner and where to meet the limo. Four hours paying for a limo and no idea where to go or what to see. One stop lasted almost two hours while we were in the bar and the limo parked outside. The guys had a pretty good time, but could have saved a lot of money with a modicum of planning.

:confused2: I thought the posts listed on this thread were normal behavior? Over the years I have lost sleep over how to word the upgrade question. Running the play by play from the time we land over and over again in my mind. Ask me any time on my upcoming trip and I can give you an accurate location within 20 feet. :ssst:

This trip I'm about to go on is actually the first where I've planned every meal. Typically I have already picked out all the restaurants we will eat at and we just go to them whichever time/days we feel like. However, I rarely plan out activities unless I bought tickets to a show ahead of time which is very rare. I just try to get a general idea of what I'll be doing. Typically the first night I stick around whatever hotel I'm staying then venture out the other nights.

Me too, and I STILL trip over the question like a mealy-mouthed 13-year old boy trying to ask the cute girl in 2nd hour Biology for a date.

When I arrive home I unpack my suitcase and immediately start packing some things for next trip.....packing things that I know I will take back and things that I wish I had brought on the past trip.

My friends get tired of hearing about Vegas and tell me I'm over thinking things. That's the whole point LOL. I've learned about so many places from "planning". That's not to say I'll stick with the plans though.
Our last trip I had most the meals planned out. Only made it to about half of what I had planned. I think the key is to plan things out somewhat and if the plan doesn't work, don't worry about, you're on vacation.

I think about upcoming trips ALL the time, ones on the books, ones we need to get on the books; where we're going or should go, what we might see, eat and do. It's the ULTIMATE form of positive AD -- wow, LOOK, a squirrel! -- oh, wait, HD for adults.

But the last thing we want on any trip is to be tethered to a time clock. We need must-have reservations, be that for food or spa or golf or activities. Past that, no thanks whatsoever. If we "miss" something, well, we obviously discovered something else. Vacation should not be an assembly line operation, it should be an experience not a race to tick off boxes on a punchlist.

One of our best experiences ever was having a flight in (not Vegas), a flight out eight days later (and which we actually changed the first morning in), and nothing on the books in between save the first few nights of accommodations.

Hey, look, everyone rolls unique, and that's cool.

Before we were parents and our work schedules were more flexible we'd hop in the car on Friday and head down to the Oregon coast, holiday weekends and regular weekends. If we found a room great, if not we'd just make a long day of it and drive back home.
We never once came home the same day, didn't matter how busy the coast was on a holiday weekend. We'd always find some out of the way cheap (and nice) place to crash. Get up and do whatever we felt like for 2 days. Not a care in the world. LOL.

I'd forgotten all about doing that until just now. Those were some awesome weekends. We took a week and camped clear down the coast to the redwoods that way one time.
