My local casino only offers $1 and up VP - and my bankroll can't afford max credits at that rate. I am guessing that the best odds (OK, least terrible odds) at min credits are with Deuces Wild rather than JOB or BP but haven't crunched the numbers. Can anyone verify?

It really depends on the paytables. What are the paytables in full detail? You really do have to crunch the numbers. And what casino only offers $1 machines or higher?

Yes, we would need to know the paytables for all pays at the credit level you are planning to play, for both games.

The reason its not so clear is because we don't want to say "at one credit its better to play Jacks or Better than Deuces Wild" but then find out later that at your casino on the $1 machines the Jacks or Better is 8/5 or worse...

    Yes, paytables are key.

But, in most cases, I think it does not matter if you play 1 coin, or 5 coins, with ONE exception - Royal Flush.

And, if that is the only difference, does it really matter much? After all, you only get a Royal once every 40,000 hands or so. (personally, I think I have 100,000 hands and no Royal - lol).

And, some machines have ZERO bump up at 5 coins.

But, back to paytables and choice of game. If DW is a 97% game and JOB is a 96% game, but your skill level is better on JOB - then JOB might make more sense?

Once again, paytables are the key, as JOB (as well as DW) could come in 5 or 6 different forms. However, I might add one more thought ... DW is a more volatile game than JOB. If you don't get a fair share of deuces, that game will eat your money at the low-end of the pay schedule.

You loose about 2% of your expected value over the long term in VP by not playing full coin (and loosing that 800-1 on the Royal). Have you considered taking up blackjack? :)

If someone wants to play blackjack, and study and play perfect, then it would be a good idea.

But to go there because they lost 2% advantage on a game they like would not be a good idea.

This is at Rivers in IL. $1 VP and $25 BJ is the lowest you're going to find any weekday evening. Sad but true. Anyway, the JOB is 8/6 and the DW 1/2/3/4/4/9/15/25/200/250 at 1 credit.

Am thinking I should stick to $10 craps, pass line & odds only, instead of min credit VP.

Your best bet by far is craps with the low house advantage strategy versus losing 3-4% + playing 1 coin in VP, and forgoing the RSF bonus.

I live in Norwood Park, and I have no plans on going to Rivers Casino. I do not like the politically connected owners, the fact that comps cannot be applied to Vegas properties or the VP pay tables or minimums.

CET runs free shuttles still run from Foster/Harlem to Horseshoe . I took the shuttle once for the "Great Race' (received $900 total in comps from CET, plus a trip to AC last year) and it was enough time to rack up 1,000 TCs, a free buffet (decent) and get there / back in under 5 hours (3 + hours there, about 50 minutes to/from).

I rather save my gambling time and bankroll for Vegas. Beyond a "Great Race" promotion, I don't gamble locally and I appreciate my Vegas trips more as a result.

Well, if you are playing pass line/odds only and nothing else, craps will be the better bet than shortplaying VP, but if you enjoy playing VP at times, you could still play them for a reasonable alternative. The biggest drawback is that the royal will only pay a depressing $250, and I feel like that will make 8/6 JoB in particular very boring. Also note, contrary to what others have said, shortplaying only costs you about an extra 1.25% in return. But it's significant enough to carefully consider your final decision based on what is available at the quarter denomination.

The payback for DW at one credit with perfect strategy is: 97.69%
The payback for 8/6 JoB at one credit with perfect strategy is: 97.22%

Now for 8/6 JoB, if you can find an 8/5 JoB machine for quarters, you're better off playing that vs. shortplaying 8/6 JoB (97.30% with max coin). Or if you could find a 20/12/10/4/4/3 Deuces for quarters, I would consider playing that instead (97.58% with max coin).

VPFree2 also says Rivers has 9/6 DDB is available for dollars. I would shortplay that game before the other two. The return of 9/6 DDB for one coin is 97.83% with perfect strategy. This game will also pay you more than a Royal when you get Aces w/a 2, 3, or 4 kicker ($400). Again though, you're better off playing 9/5 DDB for 5 quarters (97.87% with max bet) if you can find such a machine.

Ideally, unless Rivers is convenient for you, you should find another place to play if you want to play video poker with higher returns. The best machines for quarters exist at Majestic Star (99.73% deuces wild and 9/6 JoB). Horseshoe for quarters is nothing to talk about, but you can shortplay 25/15/11/4/4/3 Deuces Wild at dollars (98.73% for one coin).

We were quoting overall % (1 coin RSF + Perfect Play EV).

I'm picking a different casino, playing craps or staying home given the options.

Roughly. But perfect play returns a small amount better than that. I am pretty anal about video poker returns since you can calculate them for free here:

    http://wizardofodds.com/games/video-poker/analyzer/

And strategies for any paytable can be found here:

    http://wizardofodds.com/games/video-poker/strategy/calculator/

Generally speaking though, if he enjoys craps pass line/odds just as much, I'd stick with that unless he feels like betting $5/hand on video poker (very swingy).
