Is anyone watching what is happening at the Sahara? The property is being renovated to transform into the SLS (as most probably know).

The old casino and restaurant area that used to look over the pool, before the last addition, has been completely demolished. Besides the towers, I'm not sure much else dates back to the 50's/60's at this point.

    Found this on Vegas Chatter

I follow SLS through Vegas Chatter & Las Vegas Sun. I visited the Sahara a few weeks before closing back in April 2011. And I walked past the site in November 2012.

Too bad really cool themed resorts are being replaced by generic acronym resorts.

But positive for folks in Las Vegas because investment provides jobs and keeps new generations coming to town.

I like SLS and always stay there when in LA. However, the one which opened in Miami last year is not under the Starwood flag. With no real SPG property in vegas since Aladin closed, I pray nightly this property will be Starwood.

For those who may not be aware, SLS is owned by Sbe group which operated Hyde at bellagio. They have a huge club portfolio and solid restaurants like bazaar and Katsura.

Very nice. I am a run down casino kind of guy. I always feel intimidated by well dressed / groomed people in fancy / shiny places. I feel very comfortable and at home @ Riviera / Hooters and so on. Too bad Sahara / IP / Bill's fell by the way side.

I have never even been inside any of those places. However, on my quest to be more frugal, I plan to adapt.

I was bummed to see the old casino and restaurant area go. This was the first property I'd stayed at in Vegas back around 1990. The property had a lot of great outdoor space and didn't have the overwhelming concrete feel it has today. You could eat in the restaurants and look down over the pool area, which had real grass and trees. My hope is that at least this remodel will restore some pride to the hotel which was stripped by the last remodel and neglect, even if some things must go.

SLS is anything but generic--the LA version is HIGHLY themed. An employee at the Westin LLV told me the SLS would be a Starwood prop but I have no official word on this.

I've stayed at the Sahara, but am excited to see what SLS does with the space. I've also been inside the Miami one, it's not the best in South Beach but it's up there for sure.

The north end of the strip needs all the help it can get. Hope this project gets completed and is a big success.:peace:

Yep, it's good for everyone if that North end of The Strip succeeds. There are tentative plans for the blighted corners of LV Blvd and Sahara - let's hope they come to fruition.

I kind of forgot about the changes; thanks for the pics. I'll check it out in a couple of weeks. I was certain that the Sahara was going to be another eyesore decaying from neglect. Glad to see it renovated.

I stayed at the Sahara my first visit to Vegas in 2006 - the trip that got me hooked on this amazing vacation destination - so it will always hold a special place in my heart. It also catered well to my level "roller" and y gaming preferences, so that was also a big bonus.

All that said, I never stayed there again because of the location and always hoped the north end would start expanding on to eventually link that with the rest of the Strip. I would visit, play, and eat though. It sucks Sahara had to go, but hopefully this and the other developments recently announced are the required spark to bridge that gap. My hopes are high.
