So I have yet to play poker in Vegas, HOLDEM.

I have on cruise ships, local casinos and house games.

In Vegas I always travel with a non poker player - my brother - and we like to do things together...if we didn't, we wouldn't travel together.

I don't care if I play for an hour or less, but this time I WANT TO PLAY!

We will be staying at the GN the first night, but as we get in around 5:00pm most of our evening is filled (and there is a 2 hour time change so we will be pretty tied by 1:00am). So I probably won't hit the poker room there, unless I can go in the morning before we start our day at 8:00am. What time does their poker room open at?

Same question for Ballys - where we will be spending our other nights.

    Thanks

vegas poker rooms will only close if there is no games open but most of them have 1-2 games or more going 24 hours a day

Binions poker room is more popular than the Golden Nugget and is right across the street. If the Nugget isn't open or has a wait, take the short walk and play in Binions historic room.

    Is this true now?

Last April, Binion's struggled to get a game going before 5 or 6 pm. GN was packed all day. Locals say Binion's messed up the bonus / high hand pay outs and emptied their room.

Haven't been back or heard anything since.

    I have to disagree

Nugget room is always more full than Binions, at least for cash games. Binions 2PM tourneys get a very good draw. Nuggets tourneys have a better structure than Binions 10AM & 8PM, but they are hit & miss in size.

I posted this for someone a while back asking about tournaments on the strip, and it should be handy here too.

Every time i've stayed at ballys they've had atleast one 1/2 hold em going all day long. It may help that its always been during WSOP, so may be more poker players in town but who knows.

GN is a good place to play, but you should consider playing at the Venetian, best poker place I've been in my life.

if you are staying at Ballys and play for 6 hours (I think), you might qualify for a free room with a promo they have going. Be sure to talk to the poker room mgmt about it when you get there, and maybe before you even check in. Be sure to get a Total Rewards card as soon as possible and log your play.

If you go to one and one only poker room in Vegas, make sure it's the Bellagio. It's beautiful, great service, honest play and it's got history. Go for the experience. I always have a soft spot for the Mirage as well, mainly because that's where I always stay. Not on the scale of Bellagio, but it's easy to make some quick cash.

I would stay away from the Venetian and the Aria unless you feel like you're a very strong player. I've played many times at the Venetian but I'm always surprised at the quality of the players and regulars there. Very good players and I enjoy playing in that poker room. I've played the Aria twice and both times I've played against the strongest players I've ever seen in a casino. Both times I was fortunate to cash slightly ahead, though. I may have just gotten unlucky at the times I went, but I've decided there are much easier rooms to cut up. You can't miss with almost all of the other casinos in Vegas. Ballys was particularly easy the last few times I played there (but I hear they've moved).
