    Tipping housekeeping?

    Hello,

Tipping housekeeping... is there a protocol for this? A cohort brought it up in passing one day, and it got me thinking I never had even considered tipping the housekeeping. I am starting to feel kind of bad - is this an expected practice today? What is everyone's thoughts on this - especially for Vegas?

    Thanks!

I tip housekeeping a couple bucks on a normal day. I just leave it on the foot of the bed or with a note that says "housekeeping".

I have seen a couple of suite parties where the tip had to be MUCH larger. :wink2:

This is a topic that's been discussed numerous times. I always leave a few dollars each day with a thank you note. I know some folks like to tip at the end but the thing is it might not be the same person cleaning your room each day. While I keep my room spotless and I'm sure it's an easy clean for the staff, they work hard and I'm sure aren't make a whole lot. It's basically a service and like most services you do tip.

My bf always leaves his pocket change piled up on the table during the trip. He always adds paper money to it at the end depending on the service.

    This is what I do.
It is my understanding that housekeeping tips are pooled, this way there's less fighting over who gets what rooms on what floor/tower and keeps things more even.
    Which makes sense to me.
    Same as dealers pooling tips.

I leave change up on counter, and at end add cash to get to about $2-3 a day

Normally yes...about $3 per day.......but lately NO....when we come back to our room at 3pm and it hasn't been cleaned, I not tipping anyone....and sometimes they don't drop off more of the tiny tiny little bars of soap and I have to try to use the remains of a drop of soap...then NO tip again....give me good service and I'll tip...and now I see they get $13 per hour as per union contracts......maybe I should be tipping at all.

$5-$10 when I leave (I usually request no maid service during my stay). Otherwise it's $5 per day. I keep an orderly room. I suspect the young party crowd and other messy folks leave nothing / rarely leave something.

I was always curious what everyone else did. I always do a slight tidy up (trash in the can -towels in a pile) and leave $5-10 depending on how long my stay was.

Bally's had an envelope for housekeeping tips. It had our housekeeper's name on it and a little check sheet if there was anything in particular you needed. I think $1 per day per person is reasonable if you're pretty tidy and you're not making any requests.

I leave a Thank-You note to housekeeping every day with either a $5 or $10. Of all the tips that are expected by Vegas service personnel I think that the housekeeping staff are probably the most deserving.
I normally have a suite, so I don't want to appear too cheap.

I tip $5/day, which is probably a bit high, but I enjoy taking care of those that take care of me. I leave a pretty spotless room, as I'm generally a pretty clean and organized person. Part of my tip frankly is for the jerks that thrash the rooms and leave nothing. I always glance in the rooms as I go down the halls and some of them amaze me that people live like that and all I can see is one small section.

I dont have houskeeping come in everyday, maybe once or twice on a 3-4 day stay. The days I let them in I usually leave a couple bucks on the dresser for them with a TY note. I always felt it was good karma to tip them and anyone else who provides any type of service to me while out there.

I leave a few casino chips on my pillow when I leave the room in the morning. They're always gone when I come back. Generally it's whatever white chips I happen to have left over from the previous night. If I don't have any white, I'll usually leave a red.

    Re: Tipping housekeeping?

Might be moving slightly off topic. What do members do for twice daily or turn down service? I usually leave a tip daily in the morning but I ALWAYS forget about the evening crew. Generally I rarely use the room in the late afternoon or early evening but sometime when having guests over or taking an afternoon nap and shower they will reclean the room and take out the bathrobes and slippers. Any input into this?

The way I look at it is a stranger is coming in to clean my mess I would rather have a happy stranger than a unhappy one doing this task.So always a little note and 3-5 bucks a day. Most of the time it is money well spent extras in all the small comp stuff and a very clean room.Plus in Vegas everyone is working for a tip and you throw a lot out there, throw some to housekeeping on a daily basis.I would love to read a post from a Las Vegas Casino housekeeper on there thoughts.

3-5 bucks a day depending how messy we are. We usually saw housekeeping in the hallway and always thanked them for a great job.

I usually leave $3-$5 a day every day except the last day (unless I'm only staying for one day, of course). But if I have enough clean towels for the next day and don't need the trash cans cleaned out, I usually leave the do not disturb sign up for the day.

I do like the M Resort's policy of the guest receiving a $5 food/beverage credit if they don't use housekeeping services that day. I feel like I'm getting tipped for keeping my room clean!

The M's Housekeepers wouldn't like us then, we would probably skip housekeeping for that! We never require much. Normally I stay at cheap CET places and tip $1-2/day. I also asked an IP housekeeper once (who was playing penny video poker after her shift) about tipping per day vs. the end, and she said it really didn't matter which one you did, it all evens out in the end. I also think she said she got $9/hr before tips. Strip housekeepers have it better than most others across the country I think. I used to tip at the end normally, but I have started to get in the daily routine more since housekeepers do occasionally change.

I try to leave at least a $5 each day but admittedly don't always remember to before leaving each morning. If I see the maid I just hand it over directly and then I'll usually give more. Then either $20 or $40 before checking out...usually $40 if they remember to turn down the room every evening. I tipped a $100 to her once in Vegas after we made a serious mess in our suite one night during a bachelor party trip. I wouldn't have cleaned that room for 10x that amount.
