Every year this poll seems to be pretty heavy in the chain restaurants. I don't get it either. ;)

these annual surveys are designed to make the publisher money, so i don't place a lot of value on the end result. and they're targeted at the residential readership, not the tourist.

i'm not saying whether the picks are right or wrong, but if you live in vegas, what are the odds you're going to know what downtown hotel is the best? if you vote in that category, you're going to vote because you like the casino or your relative works there.

i'd like to think there are enough local, non-casino restaurants offering seafood, steak, etc., but chains are what the masses like, so it is not a surprise chains win some of those categories.

the ad sales dept. for the LVRJ is happy to congratulate the winners, and offer them a special deal on thank you ads to celebrate being named a "best of." that's the reason why publications are so happy to hand out awards from its readership.

Thanks Sonya, I was a little disappointed at first with the Chain Restaurants, since I'm always looking for something new, but as I paged through, I found plenty of new interesting things to do, now if I just could find the time!

I don't eat at chains at home (thankfully, most exist beyond city limits).

I definately will not eat at them on vacation.

Sad Staff Pick for best Casino - Caesar's Palace (Readers selected Cosmo). I vote Wynn/Encore for strip and The California or Four Queens for Downtown.

Staff Picked M Resort for best Locals Casino, readers selected Red Rock. I like both.

Every city (probably) has something like this, and Milwaukee is no different. Every year I send an E-mail to the editor suggesting that votes for chains should be divided by the number of locations in the market (I think there are three or four Olive Gardens here). Not only do I never get a response, it never changes, either.

Would the results be different if the casino restaurants where in the running next to non casino places?

Sad! People tend to answer polls such as this with what they are familiar with. I would interpret this as Olive Garden being the most familiar one with the readers.

Folks, we go over this year after year. These "Best Of" polls are done for one reason and one reason only - for newspapers to sell more advertising. Newspapers could care less who is the best, they're only looking for the honorees to shell out some $ for ad space.
The method for determining the "Best Of" is about as unscientific as can be. Case closed.

If only I had thought of that.

And when you say "newspapers could care less who is the best," you're saying that newspapers care.

If newspapers don't care at all, not one ounce, about which is best, then they couldn't care less.

To go along with this, I owned a service business for many years. And, from many sources we were notified year after year that we were voted #1. - from a poll nobody knew anything about. Of course, they wanted us to buy a plaque, do some advertising, etc.

People will believe just about anything.
