Approached at the flamingo sports book by a older fellow with a New York accent with a touch of attitude.
Claimed he just lost 5k on the playoffs. I enjoyed a lot of small talk with him.
Long story short, because of his losses he indicated he was flyin out early and offered me some comp tickets to O. He had me call the ballaggio and get the box office on the phone,
At which he took the phone and had the box office attendant reach his host and hold the tickets in my name. We exchanged pleasantries and I started to walk off at which time he asked if I could pick up his cab fair to the airport, " the balls"went off for me. So I offered him a ride to the airport in my rental, he become really offended that I would want to take him to the airport. I laughed at him and walked off. After I gave it some thought how much effort he put into his scam, I tried to find him again to just tip my hat for his effort and give him 20 bucks, unfortunately I never saw him again.

He's talking to the Bellagio box office! But he's not listening to them.

Funny, this EXACT same situation happened to me in August when I was in Vegas. A man was walking beside me outside of Venetian/Casino Royale when he started to ask me where I was from. We started talking and he eventually asked me if I liked to go to shows to which I replied "I guess, if I'm bored and need something to fill a part of my night I will". Then he started to tell me about his tickets to O that he had that he wasn't going to use and kept on insisting that I take the tickets. He looked very unkempt and I smelled a rat from the beginning, I definitely didn't believe that he was staying at the Bellagio but looked homeless. He asked to use my phone to call the box office and I told him I didn't have one, so he brought me into Harrah's to try to find a payphone and as we were walking through the casino to the phone I took off running when he had his back turned to me for a second.

You have to wonder if someone is trying to get your phone number, for whatever reason. He could be calling a friend who now has your number. Does not seem like it here.

As to walking through the casino looking for a phone. You should have walked up to a security type and asked for a phone... that would have had the scamster running AWAY instead of you.

With very few (very few) exceptions, "You don't get something for nothing..."

Just a view I abide by to help me raise the red flag when a scam is likely.

I probably would not have been able to control myself from laughing when he told me he bet and lost 5k on a sporting event.

Lots of scammers out there, especially in LV. Keep your head on a swivel and your antennae up and you'll do fine.........

Funny it does sounds like the exact same dude, runs a pizza shop for his brother'in NYC. If that old dude would use that energy and rap for any legit sales job, the sky would be the limit for potential income.
I'm been around the block once or twice and he had me nibbling on the hook up until the cab fare, I was certainly impressed with pitch.
I was there in January during the NFL playoffs?

I had some guy walk up to me while I was playing VP and show me a black chip. You know, the kind they sell in the gift shop. I just said NO and he took off. This was at Mandalay Bay. Once at TI a girl came up to me while I was again playing VP and asked me if I wanted to buy a diamond ring. I didn't even look at her, told her GO AWAY. The worst is the taxi driver that gets you talking so you won't notice he's driving you the long way. Out of probably 100 taxi rides, I've only had 4 bad ones, so that's not too bad I guess.

I had an older woman try the ring pitch at Excalibur a few years ago. I said no, and so did everyone else I heard her ask.

This thread is great. I think we should keep a list of these scams to people who are new can read them and won't fall for them!

I am pretty savvy, but my husband is a sap. He falls for all kinds of stories asking for money and then thinks about it and says "Hey! I think I got ripped off." I just roll my eyes at him. :rolleyes2:

What other scams have you seen in Vegas?

I've gotten the "Boo hoo my boyfriend/friend left me here and I don't have cab money to get back to my hotel.... do you have $20" a couple times.

We met some friends at Paris for drinks on a Sunday when we were all in Vegas at the same time. They proceeded to tell this story of a lady they ran into the night before.

They ran into this lady who was all upset because she was in Vegas with her friend. Her friend had invited these guys up to their room and long story short, they got robbed. She had no money, no license, no credit cards, no nothing. She had her empty purse was it, basically.

(Now, as I am listening to this, I remember they haven't been to Vegas in decades so I am just shaking my head because I can see where this is going......)

She asked for a ride to the airport so she could figure out how to still get home without ANYTHING, no identification, nothing.

(Now since I realize she wasn't asking for money, I am figuring this woman lost all her money in Vegas and didn't have the money for a cab ride back to the airport.......)

They give her a ride. On the way to the airport, a phone starts ringing. My friends say it is not one of theirs. This woman searches through what is left in her purse and shockingly finds her friend's brand new Iphone 5. She sees it is also her friend calling. She says "F that bitch" and throws the phone out the window! Now they really knew she was legit. No one scamming would have thrown that phone out the window!

It was nice to find a story that didn't end up a scam and someone could be helped out in a time of major need.... :)
