For those of you who like to play Roulette...why do you like it? I think I might play a little next trip and I have NEVER played it....only watched. A friend of mine said she loves Roulette and when we were in Council Bluffs, she played a little. She lost every single bet....around $50 in less than 10 minutes. THAT is why I've never played it. But, so many people love it so there has to be something about it.....telll me, why do you like it and how do you place your bets normally? Do you have a "method"?

It can be a pretty social game if you find the right table, and for me, there is nothing like the rush you get as the ball is about to drop in a number slot, especially when you have a large bet down.

I only play outsides though, never really cared to bet the individual numbers aside from a rare birthday bet.

I think a lot of people start playing it because it is just about the easiest table game to go up to and bet. You might not know all the corner bets and others, but you know a lot just by looking at the game. No other common game is like this.

I do not play it a lot, but I will play it a few times each trip. It is just something different and as long as I'm not betting most of my bankroll on it, I'm not opposed to the massive house edge.

My wife loves this game and for a couple reasons. First as was stated the social aspect although the odds aren't very good it can be like craps as in everyone can be rooting for the same # and when it hits the table roars. Second the 35-1 payout on individual numbers is like a lottery mentality, very exciting IF you hit. Funniest thing I saw was my wife bought in @ a Harrah's $5 table ($80) and put out four red chips on single numbers. She had never bet roulette like that, and she hit. I took the black chip for safe keeping and off she went again. She hit at least 7 individual numbers in a 45 minute stretch and the table was going nuts. LOL Never saw anything like it.

I like the randomness of it. There really is no "skill" to apply except to sit back and enjoy the game with a drink in hand.

It's a fun, social game. Very relaxing and the drinks come fast!

If you do play, try to stick with betting on numbers (inside). Because, your return range is wider, so you get what you pay for as the house edge.

In a casino, games or bets which pay 1:1 or so have lower house edges (blackjack around 0.5%, craps around 1.1% etc). However, when the winning range goes up, the house edges go up significantly (carnival games around 3%, roulette 5.4%, slots 10-20% etc.). So, there is a cost involved for being able to make a lot of money from a really small money.

If we go back to roulette, betting on black has 5.4% house edge for a 1:1 win. It's very very expensive for that kind of a return. If you want to play outside, you are better off playing pass line bet in craps or blackjack. If you want to play roulette, play the numbers, so at least you have a chance to make 35 times what you bet, which is the potential return you should expect from such a high house edge.

Its also a "slower form of death" than the BJ and crap tables can be for example. Not as many hands/ rolls in comparison. LOL! And also people usually have a favorite number to bet between 0-36.

I will re-peat/rephrase what has been said above from my own perspective.

    a) It is a slower paced game: From the time the chips are cleared and you start betting until the ball is dropped, settles in a slot and the bets are paid off can be a nice minute or two. You have time to drink, chat and just look around.

    b) Money can last a lot longer. At a $10 table, I spread my chips over 4 or five direct numbers and five or six "corners" so I can win at least $9 on 25 to 28 numbers. This lets you really milk a $100 buy in. I have had $100 last me for several hours at a rouletted table. Rarely less than an hour. At craps, $300 can go in an hour or less very easily.

    c) There is no competition. Nobody complaing that you "took their card". Nobody betting the dark side of the dice. Just everyone betting, some winning, some losing. :nono:

    d) Betting is self service, no need to ask the dealer to place the bet for you. This is preferable for some people. :peace:

    35 to 1.

Hit once in 34 tries and you walk away a winner.

I don't play BJ anymore because of this...some people get so uppity it is unreal...

I was playing roulette last night in council bluffs...

Fun to just hang at the table and bet leisurely.

I usually just bet on black...occasionally I will split the 0's

all I can say is don't even start down that road. if Natedogg's recent TR is any indication, roulette is like the heroin of gambling. 35 to 1 is unlike any odds you find anywhere else in the casino. but there's a reason for that - the risk is so high. if you hit a heater your first trip you'll be hooked for life and it will cost you more than you can even imagine. if you just steer clear of the wheel, you'll thank me later.

Yep. Just to be clear, I was answering the question as if it was "Why do people play roulette?"

I've actually only played twice; once I hit a number straight up within 4 or 5 spins and walked away; the last time I dropped about $700 in 30 mins with only a single corner hit, at which point I walked.

The trick to playing Roulette is being consistent. I've been playing with the same pattern of betting for the last five or so years, and I usually walk away from the table either up or even. That and the "non-competition" factor make this game a nice respite between my deposits at the blackjack and craps tables.

Also, if you have a trustworthy partner you can pool your money and play the "black and red" game: One of you always bets red while the other always bets black, with the understanding that at the end of the game you're going to split both pots evenly. Yeah, you won't win anything, but it's really cheap way to get drunk...ya know, if you're in to that kind of thing.

I want to hear more from this guy. He's either going to be earth-shatteringly brilliant or at least highly entertaining. Win-win either way. :)

Every single time I've been to a casino I come home either up or even.

At least that's what my wife thinks.

All you have to do is be flexible in your definition of 'even'! :Þ

Roulette is well known for being a game where people usually leave up or even. Isn't it?
