I love to laugh and joke with a dealer while playing. And I also find that I enjoy my game more when the dealer is smiling and happy, regardless whether I am winning or losing. But I do tend to win more when the dealer is happy.

Do you look for a smiling dealer before you play, or someone you can make smile even if they look bored or grumpy at first?

Happy usually beats grumpy, but I've learned that appearances are often misleading. (I bet you've heard that before.) I've been surprised so many times that I hardly care how they appear to me anymore. I'm not there to party, though I can often have as good or better a time as any; but if given a choice, I'd rather be winning against a mean dealer than losing against a happy one.

It is difficult to judge a table. Sometimes it's the players that are effecting a normally fun dealer. I personally don't necessarily like a loud dealer, I prefer a dry sense of humor. Either way, if I'm not having a good time either because of the dealer or the other players I just move. I'm on vacation and if it's not fun there are plenty other places to play and things to do.

I do look for a dealer that seems to be enjoying themselves and is interacting with the players.

I think the people at the table have more of an affect than the dealer.

While I do not want to sit at a table with a miserable dealer, and do appreciate a friendly dealer, my larger concern are the players at the table.

I will leave a table if there a miserable players complaining about losing. Most of these people eschew basic strategy and then whine endlessly about "always losing at the table." Well, you will continue to consistently lose at the table and I (and the other players & dealer) do not need to hear you whine endlessly about it.

I also have avoided (or will leave a table) with cigar smokers, and cigarette smokers if they are blowing smoke at players/dealer, instead of up or away.

I'll tip a dealer, even if they are quiet / unremarkable, but I will usually tip more to a friendly / engaging dealer.

I don't look for one. But if I get there and after 10 minutes I don't like the dealer, I sure as hell leave.

I'm more concerned with the other players. The ones who are constantly complaining when they lose drive me nuts.

A long time ago when I used to work in security in one of the strip casinos, I noticed patterns in the way dealers from different parts of the world tended to interact with players. African dealers (lots of them from Ethiopia, not sure why) tended to smile a lot but didn't talk much. American dealers, more than most, just seemed to be bored with the job. Asian dealers would often root against the players, laugh when the players lost, etc. I think they believed they were doing a better job for the house by beating the crap out of the players, and they weren't afraid to show their pleasure when they did just that. On more than one occasion I observed pit bosses trying to explain to them that it was O.K. to root for the players, smile, laugh with them, etc. because the cards and dice would take care of separating the players from their money with no help from the dealer, but it never seemed to register with them.

When I first saw this thread all I could think about was the BJ dealer in Vegas Vacation (sorry not that big a buff to quote) who asked if it would be easier if he just took him out to the alley and kicked him in the nuts.

That was the same guy that was in Princess Bride and I think My Dinner with Andre. What a great character in every movie. Now that would be a fun dealer - as long as I'm not the Chevy Chase loser.

Dealers should be quiet, respectful, and efficient. Their mood is not my concern.
