All of 'em? Nope. Because that would mean ONLY the strip would exist.

    Why?

We can gamble at the 3 dozen Indian casinos within 50 miles of home. We go to Vegas for the rest of it: relaxing at a wonderful resort, dining at world-class restaurants, seeing great shows, etc. If our favorite hotels disappeared, there would be no point.

Yes, cause I have business there, but if the Hard Rock closed I think I'd settle in at Cosmo quite nicely, though it might also "goose me" to try out downtown again. There's just so much positive chatter about downtown these days, it's getting hard to ignore. I like being at a property where the frequency of my visits is noticed and the "extras" that come with that. Not sure I'd find that at Cosmo, but bet I would at El Cortez, The D/Golden Gate or maybe even one of the Boyd properties.

We have many favorites. If just one was gone - no big deal. If they were all/mostly gone, then it would no longer be Vegas.

My favorites are already gone!!!! Stardust, Dunes, Sands, Sahara, The Ho etc... now all we have really is these big, expensive hotels that don't really care about YOU. I can remember walking into the Stardust and Sahara them remembering me by name!. I think ONLY downtown now and maybe a few local casinos is where we can get a good gamble, a cheap but, good meal and you don't feel like you need 10,000 to feel like a person, not a card number. As far as the comment about the Indian Casinos, they WON'T give you a good gamble. 32 % payback on slots is nuts, not all the Aces in a 4 card shoe, if the dice flies off the crap table--your kicked off, A lady hits the million jackpot on a progressive and they said it "malfuctioned". RIGHT!! The one thing I WILL say about the Indians--very good food and cheap along with the great hotel rooms (9.99) a night sometimes! Lets see, spend 400.00 for a flight, 50-100 a night (usually 5 nights), 135 parking at our airport, 150 rental car in Vegas or have cheap rooms/food but win absolutely shit at 32%?? At least some of Iowa casinos are ran by the state and latest payout was 94.1%.

There will always be a another spot in town to put our heads on a pillow.
HOWEVER ... if all the full-pay video poker dried up ... well, that's another story entirely. I certainly would not keep coming all the way from Chicago to play crappy VP, no matter how nice the hotel is. :nono:

I would still go. I'd find new favorites just like I have done before. There will always be hotels in Vegas coming and going and rising and falling in stature and popularity. My favorite hotels have changed over the years and some have disappeared. But that hasn't had any drastic impact on my ability to enjoy Vegas as I've always done since the 1960s.

Probably. It likely depends what went up in their place.

I like to try different hotels all the time and see what is new. Its possible that in 10-15 years, I'll have settled in to a favourite home or two, and when they are closed I'll go off on a rant about corporate greed and stupidity, and how I'm not going to go anymore.

But at the moment, going for me is about enjoying the wealth of options, and about discovery, not visiting a favourite place. Which doesn't mean I don't have favourites. It just means that if one favourite goes away, there is always another one waiting.

Vegas is a vacation destination like any other. Different, but a vacation destination. It was a whole package of goodies that fueled our Vegas obsession, including accommodations. Sure we have our faves, but we've never been tied to one part of town or one property or one players' club, so we know and enjoy the breadth of the town's offerings. Sure, I guess if the only options offered were an IP or a Vegas Club or Excalibur -- and I've stayed at all -- we probably would stay away, but that's not the case nor will it ever be. There would be no Vegas without the diversity so everything of one caste never will go away.

Yet if the accomms that we most covet all somehow disappeared Vegas still would have good accomms, so we'd go. Because if the price is right we'll do an Orleans or Monte Carlo or before it went to shit, LVH, to name a few.

What's changing about Vegas is us. Access isn't what it once was -- an easy drive of 3+ hours. If we'd been required to fly in over all those trips I iagine there'd not have been all those trips; other Californians here know exactly what I mean about the EZ allure of getting a wild hair at 2 pm and being at a bar playing VP before 6.

There's also the feeling of seen that/done that that was the result of way too many trips over a relatively short expanse of time; about a decade. (GREAT trips at the time, but in retrospect, draining.) Sure sure sure, there always will be new hotel/casinos. But absent the whacky fun theming, what we have in Vegas (hell, always had in Vegas, I guess) with the latest, greatest, newest property is a hotel, with rooms, fancy eats and a buffet, a casino, stores, a spa, and the next one in line will be a carbon copy in everything but skin tone.

The no-kidding statement du jour is that gambling brought us to Vegas. Now if the question is take away gambling and do we bail on Vegas, the answer is, of course, and not just because if gambling disappeared Vegas disappears about as quickly as if someone pulled the plug on Lake Mead. Yet compared to most here, we're really not that into gambling. I'm sure we play at stakes higher than some, way below others. We just don't seem to have the same dedication to the practice of gambling. Sure the interest is piqued when we sit at a table or VP machine. I guess we no longer jones for it.

It was too bad our December trip evaporated. It would've been our first multi-night stay together in I'd guess close to three years. We enjoyed what we did instead but the nice thing for both of us was that the planning process kinda got our juices flowing. We now obsess about other places like we once did Vegas -- actually, we obsess about travel and experiences -- yet we can feel that little twinge again. Not sure when, but we'll get back and have a thoroughly kick-ass great time.
