    My Trip Report

    Awww shit.
I’m at work. Is any work getting done? Absolutely not. In the office at 6am, out of here by 11am and out the door to drop off the dog at the sitter. Catching a 2:30 flight outta ABIA via SWA for a straight shot into Sin City. My trusty eBags Mother Lode 21” Mini rests gently in the trunk of the whip, begging to be thrust into the action ahead.
This trip is going to be a little different. I usually travel solo. Sometimes I meet up with other friends travelling from different parts of the country. This trip, two punk bastards (mid-20’s) will be tagging along with me(mid-30’s) from work, and they have yet to experience Las Vegas. I figure it’s my civil duty to not only keep these kids socially lubricated for the next 6 days, but also to keep them out of jail and the hospital. Time will only tell if my efforts will be fruitful.
Outline looks a little like this. Gonna need a rental car for this one. Staying night one at Terrible’s. Night two at the Mirage. Night three, four and five I’ll be at The D, and the kids will be at The Gold Spike. The only reason for the night on the strip is to show the kids. The reason for Terrible’s? I love the place. Not sure why, but I always have. Plans include plenty of drinking, low limit gaming and all-around degeneration.
For now, I’ll set the pen down, and when I return, we’ll see if I can’t try and capture some of the trip on paper.

    Day 1 1/30/2013: Flight, Rental Car, Terrible’s

Flight out of AUS, on time, no issues. SWA needs new padding on their seats. My ass felt like a high school football team ran over it with cleats. After landing, took the shuttle over to the rental center, and headed to EZ Rent-a-Car. There were no lines at 4pm, and all of the rental companies looked pretty light. Getting the car took about 5 minutes, and agent tried to upsell to a full size for an extra 25 bucks. Come to find out they only had full size available and I got one anyway. That’s shady business. Anyway, car was clean with low miles. Some sort of Toyota, I think maybe a Camry. Upon getting to the car, I noticed that the tank wasn’t full. I wasn’t going to cut into my vacation over a couple gallons of gas, so off we go.**Side note** Upon returning the vehicle, I mentioned that the tank wasn’t full and the agent put me in touch with a manager that said he would hook me up with a credit on my next rental and gave me his email address. I thought that was pretty swell.

Headed over to Terrible’s and waited in a short line for check-in. My room was comped, but the bastards I travelled with had issues with the mail offer. They weren’t going to honor the rate because we didn’t bring the mailer with us. They put up a lot of shit considering the promo rate was only about fifteen bucks below standard rate for the night. After management stepped in, we got the rate, but no slot play or bogo buffet. Front desk staff seemed stressed out and a little on the rude side. Since they’ve moved the players club to the same desk as check-in, things get a little hectic up there.
Rooms were on the first floor, with easy access to the casino. This was my first time in an ‘updated’ room. For those familiar with the old rooms, they basically slapped a coat of paint on the walls, added some headboards and threw in a plastic divider between the sleeping area and the sink area outside the bathroom. I think I snapped a photo of the room, and I’ll upload it once I pull the photos off my phone. The bed was decent, but nothing fancy.

After a quick change of clothes, we hopped back in the rental and headed over to the Ellis Island for some steaks. Arrived around 5pm, and I figured we’d put in for a number at the coffee shop and go get our players cards. To my surprise, there was no wait to be seated, but there was a sizable wait for BBQ. Picked up the players cards, the two bastards got 10 bucks in promo play for sign up, and we printed a ticket for the steak discount.

Service was great, we all ordered the steaks and they were awesome as usual. If you’ve never had an Ellis Island Steak, here’s the rundown: 7.99 w/coupon that you get from the players club kiosk includes a nice thick cut 10oz top sirloin steak, green beans, choice of potato, soup or salad and a 16oz beer that is brewed on site. Had two IPA’s with dinner, total bill for 3 folks was around 40 bucks with a generous tip. In my opinion this is one of the best meal values in the valley.

After dinner, we hung around Ellis for a bit, playing various machines, nothing crazy. Nothing at EI ever seems to change. Same machines, same locations. The kids both came up 20 bucks on their promo play, and I think that gave them a bit of gambling confidence. Soon they will find out that it’s not as easy as it looks.

We left Ellis after dark, and I decided to do the drive down the strip so the first timers could get a look at the lights. It’s always fun to get reactions from people on the first time drive down Las Vegas Blvd.

After the drive we swung back to Terrible’s and settled in. Since this was a bonus night, we decided to stay in the hotel and do a little gambling. Enjoyed the Michael Jackson slots and the machines were keeping us even, allowing for nice sessions. Aside from the MJ machine, I hit a little quarter VP, and a few other random machines with the dual 3-d glass. Also played the new Texas Tea community machines which were fun. Cocktail service at Terrible’s was super as usual. I think that might lend to my affection towards this place. The cocktail waitress had no problems bringing us shot/drink combos, which was nice, since lots of places enforce the 1 drink at a time rule. Lots of tequila and vodka/cran was coming at a rapid pace. Things got a little cloudy at this point, but we wandered around until about midnight and hit the sack.

***I feel like this might be a good spot to lay down my strategy for getting the most from my cocktail service when gaming. First I assess the ‘flight lines’ of the cocktail waitress. Once her route is established, I try to catch her on a round as I’m sitting down. I tip a buck on the out, and when the drink is delivered I’ll give her another 5 or 10 spot. I do tip maintenance with 1-2 bucks for drinks. I realize this doesn’t make for ‘free’ drinks, but it keeps my glass full and I’m a happy boy.***

    Day 2 1/31/2013: Mirage

I can never sleep in Las Vegas. I get up around 5am, and decide to grab some coffee from the gift shop and play a little VP. Sit down at a bonus poker machine and play pretty much even for 45 minutes. Then this happens: 4oak A’s, 4oak 2’s, 4oak 3’s. IN.A.ROW. This is the first time that’s happened to me. Photos to follow. That’s also about the best luck all trip. Sorry for the spoiler. I kindly return $50 of my winnings before the kids start to get up.
After everyone has evacuated their bowels and showered, we make the decision to hit the Terrible’s buffet. Terrible’s offers 7x points on slots and 4x points on VP all day Thursday, so we easily had enough to cover the buffet(I think it’s something like $1 comp for every 400 points, pretty generous). The Buffet was horrible. Terrible. Gross. I knew this was going to happen, but we did it anyway. My breakfast consisted of two glasses of OJ, 1 cup of coffee, 1 glass of iced tea and a bagel w/cream cheese. The eggs were unnaturally yellow and the corned beef hash was cherry red, which made for some good Vegas Vacation jokes. At Free-Ninety-Nine, it was worth it for the juice. After breakfast(or lack thereof) we dicked around in the casino for a bit longer hitting some reel machines, and then checked out and left the land of Terrible Herbst.

Next stop would be east on Flamingo to Lee’s Discount Liquor Superstore for supplies. I love this place. Great selection and prices. Loaded up on a couple bottles of bourbon and vodka and then headed to Food 4 Less to get mixers and water. If you’re in the area, Food 4 Less has awesome prices and a case of water, and juice mixers can be had for dirt cheap.

Since check-in at the Mirage wasn’t until 3, we had about 5 hours to burn, so we decided to take a stroll out to the locals strip. Took Trop down to Boulder and headed north to Stop at Cannery East since I hadn’t been on the property yet. Nice, open layout, although I’d like to see them incorporate more pin-up theme. To me it just looks like a Station property; nice, but nothing that makes it stand out. We signed up for players cards, and two of us got $5 promo play, and 1 of us got $10 promo play. Hit up the Kiss slots which were pretty awesome. I mean, it’s KISS. Those machines are pretty hilarious. Also played more MJ here.

After Cannery, went across the street to the Longhorn for a drink and some Blackjack. The Longhorn has the best rules of any BJ table I’ve ever played. There is a trade-off however. The place is a dump, and the dealers are just getting their legs, so you have to watch them. BJ pays 3-2, split anything, double on 3rd card and surrender. I think they were $3 tables when we were there, so you know how that goes. You can play forever on a 20 spot. Also note, one of our guys was getting comped drinks at the bar playing 10 coin nickel vp. Getting comped drinks for 50 cents a pull? I think that’s pretty great. After leaving Longhorn, we made a quick stop at Sam’s Town, took a quick look around, and there wasn’t much new to report on the property that I noticed. We didn’t play here, just a quick walk through.

Drove down Boulder to Sahara and over to Las Vegas Blvd., and made a stop at ‘The Worlds Largest Gift Shop’, just because I think it’s ridiculous. It’s the only place I’ve found to sell Las Vegas Thimbles, in the event any readers are looking for a thimble.

Made it to the Mirage around 2pm, and headed to the players club to pick up our Mlife cards and my buffet comp. The MyVegas buffet comp process isn’t quite there yet and took about 15 minutes to process. Line at check-in was about 2 deep, so no waiting. I was staying in the Tower Suite, and the kids were staying in a deluxe room, both courtesy of MyVegas. I know that people here are always asking about incidental holds for rooms, so I took a look at what the holds were. The deluxe room had an incidental hold of $200 and the Tower Suite was $350. For 1 night. I thought that might be a little steep for someone using a debit card, but there ya have it. Rooms were ready and check in was painless. No issues with the MyVegas comps at all, and the front desk staff was stellar.

The Deluxe Rooms are really fantastic. Well decorated, nicely appointed and comfortable beds. The room would have had an AMAZING view of the Volcano, but it was down for maintenance. I like the fact that they have a charging outlet with USB ports.

Next up, Tower Suite. Jesus H. Jones. This is the nicest room I’ve ever stayed in. I was in the south wing, room A14. I highly recommend this wing, as I had an incredible view of the strip, and an even more incredible view of the Bellagio Fountains. Floor To ceiling windows, fridge and ice maker. You’ve seen the videos. I took photos, and I’ll attach them later. The Jetted Tub was great, and the complimentary bottles of Fuji water and fresh fruit tray was a nice added touch. I would have no problems paying for this room if I ever end up on the strip again. I probably won’t end up on the strip again, so I guess this is a moot point. Just sayin’.

After a few drinks in the Suite, we decided to head down to the Mirage Buffet. We got there at 5pm, and there was zero line. I had the MyVegas comp, and used it without any issue. The Kids paid full price, and there were no complaints. I feel like there is some real value to this Buffet. The Sushi station was lacking, and the crab legs were cold and standard issue, but the ceveche selection was nice, and the cold shrimp were fresh. Pork Buns and dumplings were prepared correctly and authentic. Desert selection was also nice. Again, I’d pay full price if I were to do a strip buffet again. Dining room is also pleasant, and the drink service was attentive.

After dinner, we ran a few bucks through some slots, and I noticed that there were a lot of automated ‘table games’ on the floor. Craps, several incarnations of Roulette, Blackjack with a video dealer, and even a ‘dice’ game, which wasn’t craps, although I didn’t get a good look at it. I had to try some pop-a-matic craps. It was shit. I can’t believe the game exists. They took a game, took all the fun out of it, and then put it on the floor. Boo.

Did a little walk down the strip during the evening. This made me remember why I hate the strip. It really feels like amateur hour. *****gers clogged the streets smelling of AXE and drinking yard long slushies. We made it through Casino Royale, Margaritaville, Flamingo, Bally’s and Paris before turning around. Stopped at Margaritaville on the way back for some drinks and Nachos. The place was dead and the service was shitty. We had to walk around to find our server. I mentioned to him that he might want to check on his tables more frequently, and he argued with me. For the record, I didn’t take it out on him in his tip. I’m a karma dude. We spent the rest of the evening drinking in the suite, watching the fountain show and enjoying the lights of the strip. The suite had a great sound system, and made for the perfect vegas experience. If any of you were lucky enough to snag this MyVegas comp, you’re really in for a treat.

    Day 3 2/1/2013: Let’s go downtown!

It was really hard to leave that beautiful room, but I was ready to go somewhere comfortable. I laid in bed staring out the window until about 7am, and then decided to head out and do a little walking. Went over to Caesars as I wanted to take a peek at Ramsay’s new pub. Looks nice. Stopped at Denny’s and had some hash browns, and got the kids up so we could head downtown. Checked out around 11, and loaded up the car. It’ll be nice to stay in one place for a few nights.

Stopped at the Gambler’s General Store on Main to browse for a bit, then parked the car in the parking lot at The D. I went to check in, and the kids walked over to their hotel at the Gold Spike. Room Ready at 1pm, stayed on 21st floor, window facing west and pretty much over the FSE stage next to the hotel. The renovations are a nice step up from the days of the Fitz, and they didn’t do anything with the bathrooms, but the beds were fantastic. The Casino renovations look great also. I think that Derek is really on to something with this place. It was jamming the whole time in comparison to things seemingly less crowded at the other downtown properties. I truly enjoyed my time staying/playing here.

*As a side note, I received an offer from The D which included 3 comp nights, $50 slot play, and $50 match plays. The only restrictions were that the comp room couldn’t be used Superbowl weekend. When I called to make the reservation, she checked to see what she could do, and they ended up honoring the offer anyway. Quality customer service right there. I have always been a fan of this property as the Fitz, and I don’t think I’d stay anywhere else downtown.

After getting situated in the room, I headed over to the Gold Spike. I really used to like The Spike when it was a Jackie Property. Even with the renovations this place doesn’t feel right. All of the machines are still hand pays, the blackjack tables had limited hours, lots of the machines were closed, and the place was literally empty the whole time. The ‘newly renovated’ rooms were a joke. Everything feels really half-assed. Beds were uncomfortable, and the furniture already looked well worn. I worry about the future of this place.

The rest of the afternoon was spent casino-hopping, drinking and low limit gambling. The gift shop next to The D turned into our favorite place to buy liquor, and the recycling bin out front turned into our mixing bar. We also took full advantage of the $3 Corona and 1800 tequila shots at all boyd properties.
Late lunch this day was at 777 brewpub at the Main Street Station. It was pretty dead, and service was meh. Food was also meh. I used to really like this place…what happened? I had a half-dozen oysters and the sliders. They were alright, I guess. Maybe I expect too much. The beer on the other hand was good as usual. Had a porter with the meal. Even though it wasn’t spectacular this go around, I’ll be back.

We spent the rest of the evening playing machines at The D with enough success to keep us going into the wee hours of the morning. I had a short craps session, but wasn’t feeling the table. We ended up spending a considerable amount of time on the Elvis machines, the MJ machines and the Playboy machines. Late night dinner happened at the Coney Island at The D. I’m glad I can remember this part, because my two co-travelers don’t have much of a recollection of the dining experience. I had the Gyro and it was great. Not only was it great, but the people working there are awesome. This wouldn't be the last time I ate here this trip.

At this point, again, things get fuzzy. We have to take one of our party to the Spike to crash. Then we head out the door of the Spike, and traveler #2 makes a u-turn and heads back to the room. Amateurs.

I end up doing the same. Up to the room to pass out.

    Day 4 2/2/2013: SIGMA DERBY!

Did I mention how comfortable the bed was at The D? Serta makes a fine mattress. I’m up at 7am and have a short $5 BJ session downstairs with a friendly talkative dealer. I appreciate that they don’t start blasting the casino music until a little later in the morning. I buy in for 60 bucks, play for an hour, and walk away with $65 bucks and a handful of .50 cent pieces. Finally get the kids up and out, and I hit Coney Island for a Hot Dog Breakfast. The dog was great, and I was sober, so I knew it wasn’t a fluke. Fresh relish, nice snap on the dog. Well worth the $4 price tag in a land of .99 cent dogs.

After the dog, I take those punk bastards from work up to the 2nd floor of the D so they can experience the beauty of the sigma derby. I have only played this at MGM, so when I found out that there was one at The D I was stoked. We all bought in for a couple rolls of quarters, and the drink service up there was almost too good. It was dead at the table, but with all of our hooting and hollering, we got the other seats filled up, and I got yelled at by some guys wife for ‘getting him drunk before noon’. I have a way of sweet talking cocktail waitresses into bringing shots for the whole table. Sorry random wife, it wasn't my fault, I swear.

We burned through a good chunk of the day at Sigma. Upon leaving we hit the gift shop next to The D and made a bunch of Bourbon/Lemonade Drinks and wandered up and down Fremont, dipping into Binion’s, Golden Nugget, Golden Gate, The Cali, and ultimately over to Main Street Station, where the kids wanted to eat at the buffet.

That buffet was shit. Barely serviceable. I’ve had breakfast here, and it was okay, but this was plain bad. And, I was good and liquored up. That’s a bad sign. I picked through a few things, there was a Hawaiian pork dish that was edible, so I went with that, and drank enough iced tea to make it worth my while.

After dinner, I parted ways with the kids. They headed up to nap, and I walked down to The Bunkhouse on 12th/Fremont to see some bands. The Bunkhouse is a local staple, with some decent local acts. It was depressing to walk past the boarded up Western, but it looks like they’ve done some work to Atomic Liquor. The sign was lit, and there was a new paint job. I looked inside, and it didn’t look like the build out was complete. Had a few PBR’s at the Bunkhouse and took that shady walk back to FSE and passed the F out at the D.

    Day 5 2/3/2013: BIG GAME

Woke up about 7am feeling like a million bucks. I take this as a sign and go downstairs to play a few slots. I sit at a WOF .25 and finally hit my first 1000 wheel spin! 250.00 up, I decided to get myself a nice Makers Mark on the rocks. Only in Vegas. I hit Coney Island for another breakfast dog, and me and one of the work bastards decide to go to the El Cortez, while the other wanders downtown. I’m feeling pretty good, and it’s about 9am. I get friendly with a bartender at the El Co, and he hooks us up pretty damn good. We’re playing some old school games, Texas Tea and Phone Tag, and then it hits me. I’m fairly shitfaced, it’s 11am, and there’s some sort of important football game happening in a few hours.

We decide to hop on a $5 table at El Co, and there was something very wrong. Everyone at the table was having a good time. Cheering. Drinking. Talking. This is a new experience for me, considering the depressing nature of that pit in general. We play for a few hours and have a blast before walking back to The D.

I decide to throw a 20 spot on B’more just to make the game interesting, and we spend the afternoon in the casino. After all of the planning and trying to decide where to watch the game in the weeks prior, we end up watching the first half of the game from a BJ table at The D, and it was great. There was a monitor right over the table, and there were people 4 deep at the long bar watching the game. I wouldn't have wanted to do it any other way. I have a bad feeling I’m going to hit a wall soon, and it’s early.

We end up at the Gold Spike for the 2nd half, only kinda watching the game from a BJ table. I’m not going to make it much longer. We go to the café at the spike. I get fried shrimp and a cheeseburger. Amazing drunk food. Before the end of the game, I get up to go to the bathroom. I wake up in the stall at 10pm, my belt is missing. Why is my belt missing! Did I rip it off in a fit of joy? Did I try and whip someone? This is going to be one of those Vegas mysteries. I brush off the shame, and stumble back to my room. Watch a little Dateline, and fall back asleep.

Day 6 2/4/2013: Time to go home

I hate the last day. I continue my ritual of getting up early. I’m showered and packed by 7am, and I hit the BJ tables to use my match plays. The match plays were very odd at The D. I was given 4-$5 match plays and 3-$10 match plays. I played through them, and cashed out $5 profit. Spent some time on the Hangover slot, which is one of my favorites and was able to play on the same 20 for a good hour. Around this time, the kids got up, and decided to have breakfast at The D grill. They did a really nice job on the room, and I had one of the best Country Fried steaks this morning. Herb Crusted, covered in gravy, over texas toast , with a couple eggs and potatoes. Kids had burgers, said they were great. Good start to the last day. After breakfast, I went to the book to collect on my Ravens win, and checked out. On the way to the airport, stopped in to the Hard Rock. I haven’t been there since they added the tower and addition to the casino. The place looked pretty nice, but I just don’t feel right in that place. I’ve seen many shows there, but the vibe for me sucks. It was fun to walk around and check out all the new memorabilia they have up.

The kids wanted one last gaming hurrah at Terrible’s so we stopped by for an hour for some video poker and MJ. We all left up about even for the session. Off to drop off the rental car and over to the terminal, everything going smoothly. Flight left on time, and we landed 15 minutes early. I type this last bit from my bed, in hopes of passing out soon, so I can get to work early in the AM.

    Springer’s Final Thought:
Had a great trip this time around with the first-timers. This was the first time on the strip for me in a long time, and as much as it isn’t my scene, the Suite at the Mirage made it all worth the while. Cocktail conditions were great at The D and at Terrible’s. It was also great to have a rental car for the trip, and I’ll probably incorporate that element into my future trips. Of course there were some ‘stays in Vegas’ moments on the trip which didn’t quite make it into this report. If you’ve been to Las Vegas, you’ll know what I mean. Crazy shit happens. 5 nights is my magic number, but I’m already looking forward to the next trip Memorial Day weekend!

Sorry for the long length. These things are hard to write! Stay tuned for photos!

So you passed out in a men's room for a few hours and your friends didn't get worried? Yeah, I think you're better off leaving this one as a "mystery"

    Great TR, thanks for sharing!

I love it! I wish I could be so carefree as to get totally hammered and black out...I would probably lose some serious money though....

    Great report!

So you stop at Lee's and buy a "couple of bottles of bourbon & vodka" on day 2 and then tell us how great all the CW service was everywhere!

Fall asleep in the bathroom w/o your belt, I love it:drunk: Just saying...

Sorry to hear about your two poor meals at MSS. No secret it's our favorite place and have yet to be disappointed.

..so I'm apparently the only one who enjoys a quick nap in a public restroom? :)

And Joe, those bottles are for the two 'S's', sharing and supplementing. Easy to make friends when you're walking around with a bottle of good Bourbon!

Anyway, here's a link to the few photos I was able to snap. Hope you enjoy!

Ok now this is funny. We met some guys from texas that were there this past weekend and they said they lost their friend. They looked around all day and couldn't find him. He finally showed up 5 hours later in the room. When they asked where he had been he said the shitter. Ha. The guy passed out in a stall for 5 hours. And that was at 3 in the afternoon. Haha

I never played Sigma Derby. Looking at your picture, am I correct there is no place for a Players Card?

No Players card on this one Joe. Doesn't take bills either. Coin in, coin out. It's worth playing a roll of quarters though, especially if you get a good table of people. When I lived in Las Vegas, we would sometimes go play at MGM after breakfast on weekends, and there were some pretty serious players there, keeping spreadsheets of winning combos. Not a lot of money to be had here, but it's damn fun.

Love your humor. And I hope you really did try to whip somebody. That would've made for some great people-watching. :haha:

    Thanks for the great report!
