We will be in Vegas the first week of April and are looking for a steak restaurant for a fancy night out. I like places with good service, nice atmosphere and good food. So, I guess I want it all. I have been looking at reviews and think that Vic and Anthony's at Golden Nugget and Craftsteak at MGM. Any advice would be appreciated.

Craftsteak and SW (Wynn) are my favorites. Steaks are fantastic at both. I think the salads/sides/apps might be a bit better at Craftsteak and the service slightly better at SW. You can't go wrong with either though.

Another vote for SW Steakhouse--we eat there every time we stay at Wynn. Try to get a table on the patio so you have a fabulous view of their shows. I love the hibiscus dancing to Rachmninoff and the frog singing Louie Armstrong's "its a wonderful world".

tell us a little bit more about your experience with steakhouses. for instance, have you eaten at a ruths chris, or a mortons? are you familiar with the ala carte pricing at most nicer las vegas steakhouses?

would you have a bottle of wine, or cocktails, and what do you pay for a bottle of wine with dinner at a nice restaurant where you live? just do not want to recommend somewhere that might give you sticker shock if that is not your expectation.

where are you staying, especially if you do not have a rental car? a twenty dollar cab ride each way might be a budget killer, if you have a budget.

what kind of atmosphere are you desiring? there are a couple of trendier places, thinking of N9NE where i have dined, and gordon ramsey which i have not, which might be louder than what you are wanting.

i am a big fan of delmonico for my fancy steak dinner of a trip, and a detractor of a place called hugo's cellar downtown, which i am sure that someone will recommend to you. i also do not mind saving some money and having multiple good meals at embers, which was in the imperial palace and may or may not be reopen in the "quad"?as well as the cortez room at the gold coast.

so, tell us more, and there will be lots of people to give you more recommendations!

if you want to get out of the casinos I have 2 very good options for you.
My number one place is smith and wollensky's (on the strip between MGM and Planet Hollywood). I love this place. In house dry aged steaks and you can do an affordable shellfish platter. And they are open a little later than a typical casino steakhouse.
My number 2 place is delfrisco's. They're steak is also top know... the only downside is that it is a short cab ride offstrip.

Another question for the OP. Do you prefer dry aged or wet aged?

On the strip I vote for SW as well. I agree with the above re DelFriscos. Had a great steak there. Only problem with it was on the way out the cabs stand was totally jacked up and we waited 15 mins or so. Could have been an anomaly...

We are big fans of the Redwood Grill at the Cal downtown. We eat there almost monthly. (The 30 dollar comp helps) :licklips: 32 for 8 oz filet mignon and 4 scampi shrimp or 35 for 12 oz filet I think 52 for King crab decent prices
ask for Hilario he is top notch :peace:

    here's more info

We have eaten at Ruths Chris, but not Mortons. We are familiar with the ala carte pricing and understand the prices we would be paying at a higher end steak house.

As for the beverages, I would probably order a scotch or vodka instead of a bottle of wine. Maybe hubby would prefer wine with a good steak, can't be sure about that.

We are staying at MGM and will not have a car, but we know that without a car we will be spending money on cabs.

Not so much into trendy or loud. Would prefer old school to trendy and good service to flashy and bright. It is for a birthday celebration and we want it to be a special night. Good service and good atmosphere are nice, but also want good food.

Hope that helps. Thanks so much for the advice so far.

Since you're at MGM, like I said before, you can't go wrong with Craftsteak. There may be others that are better, but that's going to be opinion. It's in the top tier without a doubt, and it's right in your hotel. It's the only restaurant in Vegas I've eaten at more than three times, and there's a reason for that.

Their scotch menu is perfect. If there are two of you, you'll have trouble finishing the side dishes, as they are large.

I went to Craftsteak and was disappointed which shocked me. I think my experience is not typical as most people do like it. Carnevino at Palazzo is tops for me.

thanks, hrt4. given your reply, i think that giving craftsteak a try and being that much closer to your room should be a definite possibility. you will have the advantage of walking by, peeking in, for a period before you decide for sure.

as i said earlier, delmonico at the venetian is my favorite.

sw at the wynn, prime at bellagio would also fit the bill.

in the 4 corners area where you are, other than craftsteak, i can think of gallaghers at nyny which i would not recommend.

have fun, thanks for eating beef!

At MGM I would choose Nob Hill over Craftsteak, however Craftsteak was great as well.

I agree. Nobhill is fantastic. Get the lobster pot pie. I didn't want to like it, but it's amazing.

I suggest Charlie Palmer Steak at Four Seasons, just a short cab ride from MGM. Service is impeccable, decor is upscale steakhouse. You can review their menu online.

    Enjoy!

yes, charlie palmer is highly recommended by someone else on the board who's opinion i trust. i had heard that he had shut down his restaurant in chicago? so i did not know if the one in las vegas was closed or had become something else?

nobhill sounds wonderful, but am i wrong in perceiving that it is not really a "steak" restaurant?

+1 Charlie Palmer. Made last minute reservations (one hour before arrival) to Charlie Palmer while staying at MB the last trip. It was hassle free and when we arrived with a party of 4, were immediately seated. It was 6pm on a Saturday night and the room was fairly empty because they open at 5:30pm. I ordered the dry aged bone in strip steak. It was a bit dry even though I ordered it medium. The girls of the group had the surf and turf with filet mignon. My friend got the bone in ribeye, which I sampled and concluded was the best tasting steak of the four. Excellent sear, juicy and full of flavor. I'd rate it over the ribeye at Prime. Service was attentive but not intrusive and there was no air of pretentiousness at all, my experience at Prime again paled in comparison. I would skip their dessert though. Had the chocolate chip cookies with icecream and orange creme brulee. Both were mediocre at best.

Its still open, unless they closed it after January 5, 2013. We ate there twice on our NYE trip.
