Got an offer from V/P today for some comp nights. My sister still doesn’t have a room booked for our March/April trip together, so I figured I’d give them a call. Now, I’ve given V/P very little play over the past few years. So, usually when I call them about an offer, it’s all “sold out”. Surprisingly, this time was different and they actually had the dates I wanted available.

So, as we’re going through the whole booking process, the (incredibly friendly and helpful, btw,) lady mentions the resort fee and what it covers, that it is charged at check in…blah, blah, blah. Then she says “can you hold on for a minute?” When she comes back, she says “I’m glad I checked…the resort fee is optional; you don’t have to pay it, but you won’t get the benefits.”

I assume that this is only for comp’d rooms. In two prior (comp’d) stays at V/P, I was charged the resort fee once and not charged it the other time. This is the first time I’ve ever heard anyone say that it was “optional”. :confused2:

I’m not really going anywhere with this…just thought I’d put it out there as I found it interesting. :rolleyes2:

I get offers frequently from Treasure Island with an optional resort fee.

I've also seen that from TI. Was going to call and inquire how it works, but the offer wasn't good enough so I didn't bother.

It's optional at Cosmo for comped rooms as well.

I think it is only for comped rooms as when I play the MyVegas game, the rules say that the resort fee is waived for the comped rooms. I would imagine that if you wanted to use the amenities that you would have to pay. I also noticed that many many hotels do not include internet access in with their "resort fees" and they make you pay an additional $12+ just for 24 hour access.

For our stay at Palazzo last month, the optional fee included: Wifi/Internet,
fitness center access, unlimited local and toll-free phone calls (who does that anymore?),
a daily newspaper, boarding pass printing, one coffee at Café Presse and a 2-for-1 well drink,
house wine/domestic beer at the casino lounges.
I think the cost was $25.

I stayed at Palazzo last week on a comp and was very happy when the lovely young woman at check in asked if I wanted to waive the 'optional' resort fee. She told me that this is a recent development. I was even happier when they comped the most of my charges at the end of my stay. It was a very good stay!

If you are thinking about taking advantage of services offered by local entrepreneurs, you may want to use the hotel phone instead of your cell. Just sayin. :wink
