After reading dozens of trip questions tonight I realized what these boards need is a questionnaire. Some thing to get as many of the average questions out of the way up front so other, more traveled, forum members can be more informed when they try to answer the OP.

I don't have any disillusions. This list isn't going to be perfect from the start. But maybe we could advance it with suggestions and revisions until it becomes a standard. I would actually like to simplify this list as I believe I'm a bit over zealous. Any suggestions are welcome. Here it is....

    1. Age or Age group?

    2. How times have you visited previously?

    3. Rate these attributes from 1 to 5. (1 = Not true at all - 5 = Yes very true.) Answer any follow up questions.

    a) I enjoy spending time lounging around my room reading, catching up on work, etc.

    b) I'd like to do some fine dining while in town.

    c) I prefer quick eats/24 hour food rather than restaurants.

    d) I plan on hanging out at the pool. (If answer is 1 then skip question e)

    e) When I'm at the pool I like a party atmosphere.

    f) I prefer to come down from my room and step right into the action.

    g) I'd like to experience the nightlife in vegas. (which one(s)?)

    h) My spouse/partner/significant other will be joining me in vegas.

    i) My spouse/partner/significant other isn't into gambling. (If 3-5 name other activities)

    j) I am looking for a specific type of gambling activity (ex. blackjack, slots, keno. which one?)

    k) I or my spouse/partner/significant other will be doing some shopping.

    l) My health (ex. bad back) requires special accommodations or room types. (3-5 what type?)

    m) I'd like to mix up my vacation in vegas with activities other than gambling. (Examples?)

    n) I'd like a bright casino with an exciting, party like, atmosphere when I gamble.

    o) I would rather walk rather than pay for a ride if at all possible.

    p) I value my comfort level/or time more than any potential money saved.

    Lots of great questions.

    Sadly - the newbies that come along will not refer to it. It would be great if folks would discuss a few of these in their initial postings. Instead of the often asked ;

Going to Vegas, which hotel is best?
    or
    Which show is best?
    or
    Which steakhouse is best?
    or
    Which casino is best?

    LOL!!

I understand where the idea comes from, but really, some things are better to have come out through conversation. This is a community. Besides, as much as seeing the same question, or a question with no background info asked can occasionally be annoying, reading through a bunch of questionnaire answers would be pretty boring, too.

As a newbie, I thought about this subject and concluded I don’t want to fill out a questionnaire as they always become too generic. My suggestion is to encourage new members to share more information about why they actually joined the board and what they are looking for. Don’t ask me how to make this happen as hardly anyone follows directions anymore.

Below is a brief bio of why I’m here. I would post on my profile page if I could, then it could be reviewed when I ask a newbie question that deserves a response.

Why am I following this site?
I am 46 years old, at 43 I went to Vegas to try a re-live some of the fun I had in my younger years. Was going through my mid-life crisis? I guess.
I have taken a couple business trips for trade shows, I stayed at the MGM and Harrah’s. Work trips aren’t fun for me. Trade show all day and entertaining all night for three days doesn’t work for me anymore. I’m out of practice.
Went to a couple RUSH concerts at MGM, I stayed at the Excalibur both times. Not sure why I stayed there the second time, as I wasn’t at all pleased with the first stay.
I took my Mother and Father to the Star Trek convention a couple times. It was fun for people watching. (as some people really take that show seriously). Dad and I had a great time playing “Who the Ho”. I sure miss that.
I took my son on black Friday weekend last year, as he has starting to enjoy spending time with me again. (Or is it he just found another way to make a withdrawal from the “Bank of Dad”.)
I’m a history buff and have become interested in Vegas history watching some of the new shows on the TV. I made my first trip Downtown on my last visit. I will eventually stay down town when I find someone that isn’t to uppity to hang with me. I don’t need all the glam to have a good time, just a drink, a cigar and some good conversation.
    thanks

I agree, if I had to read the same questionnaire with every new thread I'd pretty much stop reading this board.

I like your idea. I definitely see how a questionnaire would be annoying to fill out. A short bio in a forum poster's signature would really help cut down on the repetitive questions.

I wouldn't mind seeing the forum put up a poll to determine the five best properties in different categories once or twice a year. For instance the Wynn might win best overall hotel for the price award, Planet Hollywood might win best in the under 30 category etc.

If you like Vegas history, I highly recommend the book "Quiet Kingmaker" if you haven't read it already. Among the probably 50 Vegas books I have, its one of my favorites.

I like the concept because recommendations absent context don't really do much. But it seems impractical from a time/effort perspective. Who is going to take the time to wade through all of these? As it is, a huge percentage of questions have been answered over and over here, yet the archives are ignored for the simplicity of just asking again.

There are plenty of web sites that rank the hotels, pools, restaurants, shows..... Most of these web sites also have outdated reviews.

Vegas changes quickly and frequently. What this web site provides are basically real-time feedback and in-depth reviews which go beyond a basic rating scale.
