Trying to plan 1st ever trip to Vegas and I was wondering if this was a good deal on Travelocity...round-trip flight from Birmingham, AL to LV and 2-night stay at Harrah's from 6/2/13-6/4/13 for $1073. Is this a good deal or should I keep looking? Thanks!

Keep looking!! BHM can be high, but that's too high, especially for that property.

It's usually better to book separately.

I would say always compare any package deal you find to the best deals you can find individually. Don't forget to factor in resort fees if the hotels are different, as they won't be included in your package price (for the OP, no need to worry about resort fees at Harrah's). On a couple of occasions now I have scored deals on air+hotel that worked out to be equal to or less than the price of airfare alone at hotels with no resort fee.

Michelle, that is wayyyyyy too high. I just did a quick serch for your dates... i looked at kayak for the flight (found one with 1 stop) @$377 and the hotel seperately from their website - 2 nights for $157.
$535 for the entire package with tax included.

Was your price for travelocity for 1 person or was that 2 flights?
Also, If do your shopping for flights on a wednesday, the prices for the flights are considerably lower.

also, If you are a gambler, I would book directly from the hotel and not through one of the travel sites. There is a chance they will comp you or take some money off the hotel (but they can't do that if you book through a travel site).

Thanks so much for letting me know it's cheaper to book separately. I really want us to stay at Harrah's, so I signed up for their Total Rewards card online and checked the room rates...$36/nt for the nights we are (tentatively) planning on going!! YEAH!!! :) Now I just need to find a cheap flight...from what I've seen, I already know it's going to be cheaper to fly out of Huntsville than Birmingham. Thanks again! :)

Before you worry about the comp side of things, it may still make sense for you to book the discounted price instead of going through the hotel directly, especially with a CET property where they aren't known for their generosity with back end comps.

You'd have to gamble a pretty good amount at Harrah's for them to pick up your room. A way to get both values is to book through the discounter and get the good price, then charge some meals to your room. If you gamble enough, they can take the meals off your bill even if they can't touch the room itself.

I would also suggest if at all possible to stay a 3rd and possibly 4th night simply because the majority of your expenses is he flight....once there to double the time is not a great amount......of course your schedule dictates but 2 nights can go SO fast for that amount of money. Good luck!!

Also, if you are going to fly direct from Birmingham, I think that Southwest is the only airline that goes nonstop to Vegas from Bhm (could be wrong). Their fares are not going to show up on Travelocity. You will have to go directly to Southwest site to book those. Flights are around $398 rt for dates you mentioned. Flying nonstop. That being said, the comfort of the Delta flights may be better than Southwest given the long trip time, despite the 1 stop.

Yeah, I've been to Southwest's site and saw their prices for non-stop from B'ham to Vegas. Still a bit over budget. Is there anybody cheaper than Southwest?

Depending on how much you wanted to save money, Atlanta sometimes has cheaper flights with more nonstop options. Could easily get a low 300s, or a high 200s if lucky. Probably best to monitor just the Bham flights for about a month to see if there is any movement, then look into other airports if you want something cheaper. Just searched on Bing, it says fares on your date from Bham will drop by $50+ with 80% confidence.

Oh, cool! Thanks so much! Yeah, once the dates are set in stone I'm going to go ahead and book the room at Harrah's and keep hunting until I find a "good" airfare.

I fly my mom out of BHM for our Vegas trips, and I have found you just have to watch that airport, and when you see a good deal, pounce on it because it won't last long. I use a site called "airfare watchdog" to try to find her cheaper fares. Last year, she scored a flight for 275 round trip on Delta from Birmingham, so deals are possible! I've never found any real bargains out of HSV, but my mom isn't a morning person and wouldn't make that drive. By the time we add in her gas and time, the savings of going to Atlanta really isn't there. Especially when you come home, you don't want a long drive ahead of you.

Michelle, with your total rewards card, its actually good at several casinos in Las Vegas, not just Harrah's. Your total rewards card makes you eligible for a discount at all properties owned by Caesars Entertainment (which used to be called Harrahs Entertainment) so don't feel limited to only the Harrah's casino. My mom is a fan of the Bally's hotel/casino (same group, similar price point) but you can use their website to search prices across all the hotels, using the rate calendar.
