Decided to fly in for a couple of days on my vacation. Got a great deal at el cortez for 2 nights for 49 plus tax which includes 2 (15 dollar breakfast coupons) and 1 credit of 15 dollars in free slot play. All in all only paid about 10 bucks out of pocket after tax. Was in San Diego for a couple of days and caught an SWA flight to LAS. Ended up having to wait for the WAX for about 20 minutes and just as it came a gentleman and his friend joined me at the waiting area. They timed it perfectly. Listening to their conversation on the bus I noticed one of them was remarkably knowledgeable about Vegas and started chatting with him a bit. We had a great conversation and it turned out we were both staying at The ElCo. The three of us walked to the ElCo together and they were nice enough to let me check in first. We Exchanged names and said we'd hope to run into one another again in the casino sometime.

The next day I indeed ran into them again in the casino. Mark stopped me and asked point blank if I frequented any of the Vegas message boards and I told him that I am a member here and it turns out he is as well. So Nice to meet you Markcind!!!

Has anyone else ever ran into someone that happened to be on VMB just by pure chance? I have to admit this is a first!

My wife and I walked up to the Boar's Bar at MSS (surprise) and started playing our normal machines #1 & 2 and were chatting with Jose and he calls me by name. Person on machine #3 asks if I'm Joe from VMB?

Vegas memories get a little fuzzy :drunk: but I think it was Joe Strummer.

I got 'made' at the Boars bar at Main Street Station by Squidward - on account of I was acting like an ass, and drinking a vat of Absolut.

Sorry to hijack, booked under the same deal at Elco... Did you use the breakfast coupons solo? Any restrictions on timing and such? Thanks!

And no, never bumped into anyone and I can be a talker. I have met a member jacj before and ate downtown, but I'll be keeping an eye out for knowledgable folks in the future!!!

yeah - first night downtown a few years ago at the end of November - so it was pretty quiet. I was in binions and decided to go have a quick look at the new bar at the back - looked in through the window and saw Hurricane Mikey and Doc Al having a drink and lounging around like they owned the place.

I had met them before but wasn't expecting to see them that trip! Naturally we had a couple of drinks and then went and took over a pai gow table at El Cortez.

    rough pair those two... :D

McGoo: How many days are you "in" for? I'll be downtown the first 3 nights and will undoubtedly "serve" some time at MSS. Maybe I'll see you at the bar, though I won't have a clue how to recognize you.

Hey Turtle, I will be at the MSS for 6 nights starting this Sunday,
How to describe myself, hmmm white guy, average weight and build, 30 yrs old very short hair, receeding hair line (hey, Im honest) should have a black jacket on or on the chair, may be wearing a black poor boy style cap or it will be beside the machine, and will be alone most likely.

Geez hard to describe myself, I sort of look like and every man.

Cheers, stop by if you think its me!

I did indeed use the breakfast coupons as a solo. It's basically like a 15 dollar gift certificate. The first day I ordered off the late night menu so I racked up a bunch of stuff and went about 1.20 cents over. Still not bad for bacon, eggs, toast, bagel w/ cream cheese, and pie with ice cream/whipped cream. It does NOT include gratuity however. 2nd one I got steak and eggs and ended up a dollar under.

I turned the 15 dollars in free slot play into 16 dollars of real money playing bartop video poker.

About 18 months ago, I was staying at the Cabana suites at the EC. I was having a little look round upstairs in Fitzgeralds, now the 'D' of course. I walked past a guy studying a menu. I approached him, "Dewey? I'm English Dave." He smiled, and confirmed he was indeed Dewey from this board. It was great to meet him. He is very recognisable from his photo here!

    Chance Encounter

Back at ya, Shaah! It was fun meeting another downtown fanatic and board participant. This is the first forum I've ever regularly participated in on the internet. I suspected you were among the members for the same reason you pegged me - an unusually keen knowledge of and attachment to the downtown scene and history. Still don't really know why I find it so fascinating. My wife just thinks I'm strange.

It's great to see that progress continues downtown. Zappos will be moving its headquarters downtown this fall. Tony Hsieh (Zappos founder and zillionaire) lives in the Ogden (near ElCo) and apparently now owns much of it. He is the "godfather" of downtown and is funding the Downtown Project (check out the internet site) that is revitalizing Fremont East and adjacent areas. His converted shipping container retail/entertainment project is just starting on a site on Fremont between 7th and 8th. I ate at "Big Ern's" Barbecue, a trailer next to the container site on 7th, for lunch one day and talked with Big Ern, a former Zappos employee about it. He said he'll be moving into the project hopefully by late summer.

Two new clubs have opened in the past couple of months across from ElCo, Backstage Bar and Billiards and Commonwealth. I checked both out in the early evening. Backstage is done on a shoestring and a bit bare-bones at this point. It has a roadie/band theme and is apparently owned, at least in part, by two well-known DJs. Commonwealth is very upscale and has a "speakeasy" theme and a neat open roof top patio and bar. It was slammed over the weekend.

It's clear that East Fremont has become the local "hipster" hangout. Anyone feeling like the area east of the canopy is "sketchy" has either led a sheltered life or hasn't been there in awhile. Yeah, there are still bums and loonies, but they are well outnumbered by everyone else. Even when it seemed like it was just me and the bums and loonies (usually early in the day), they were never anything more than a minor annoyance.
