Staying at Orleans soon. I would like to try the fresh oysters at their raw bar. Anyone tried them? And does anyone know whether their oysters are Gulf, Atlantic or Pacific?

Last time there recall them being Gulf oysters, although the season may determine type. Pricey, compared to home, but enjoy each visit.

The menu lists "seasonal selection" so they could be from wherever the best price is at the time, a dozen is $19, not a bad price, these are likely from the Gulf. You could expect to pay $3.00 or so for a single Kumamoto oyster from the Northwest or a Wellfleet from the Cape. The Riviera had a happy hour "buck a shuck" special about a year ago.

I met an oyster farmer who said at the turn of the last century, the per capita consumption of oysters was 4 lbs. It's now about .4 lbs. I was in Greenwich Village this week and found a bar that has an all day special, $8 for 6 oysters and a beer, so I had three. They were Blue Points from NY, it was like kissing the ocean.
