I am planning a trip to Downtown Las Vegas from February 15 to February 19, 2013. My two hotel choices are The Plaza or Golden Gate and I need help deciding which one to stay at. I have not been downtown in 10 years or so.

    1. I will be playing only table games and should give either casino a minimum of 4 hours per day, $25 per hand, action. My bankroll is $7,000, but I take full odds in craps, which means my actual action is closer to $25 per hand. Per the hosts I have spoken to at both locations, this should qualify me for a free regular room. At the very least, I should get a casino rate.

    2. My group will be staying at the Plaza, which is the main plus for my staying there. However, I have heard mixed reviews about the table games at the Plaza. In general, I have heard that the tables are dead most of the time and many of the dealers are surly or depressed. Does not sound as fun.

    3. I have heard great things about the Golden Gate Casino female entertainers. It sounds like a more fun place to gamble in the evenings. Tables are busier, which is good for me in terms of ratings, as I won't play quite as fast. 10X Odds in craps is also appealing. Downside for Golden Gate is that I have heard the rooms are very loud before 1:00 am due to Fremont Street.

Any suggestions would be welcome. If anyone has a host at Golden Gate, I would appreciate a referral.

I suggest you listen to what you've heard. You can stay at the plaza and play elsewhere you know. With that kind of bankroll you really shouldn't think about the small cost of them hotel rooms, it's a drop in the bucket.

When you get there and look around at those places and elsewhere, you will know what to do.

I have never stayed in either place (my DT choice is the Golden Nugget). Having said that, I find that the Golden Gate has a great gambling atmosphere (and I always get comps - even though I'm a low roller). I gambled at The Plaza and have found the tables dead most of the time...I just don't like The Plaza's vibe. However - I heard the rooms are very nice at The Plaza since they rennovated.

I thought the golden gate regular rooms had the oldest and dingiest bathrooms of pretty much any place I've ever stayed at, and that includes outside of LV as well. Unless you land a suite there I'd say stay elsewhere.

That said, the casino is a blast with the dancing dealers. They are all great fun and it is a great time. I love playing there.

I guess it depends of how important the room is for you. When I travel for business, I stay in nice places, or when I take my wife/family on vacation, I want a nice room. The Plaza rooms are nice, the remodel was well done, if you want/need a very nice room at a very good price, then go Plaza.

The remodel at the Golden Gate was also well done, but there is just no getting around the fact that the hotel is over 100 years old. The rooms are small and quirky, and the bathrooms are old. But, for me, on a boys trip where all we really do is sleep in the rooms, they work perfectly. And the noise can be an issue, but if you just ask for a room that does not face Fremont St, you won't have a problem. Plus, you are 30 seconds from your room to the craps table (best casino in town IMHO), Du Pars or your car at Valet, how can you beat that?

Ten years ago I used to play craps at the Plaza because it was full of WWII vets and the tables were active. I walked through the remodeled casino last August to get a slice for lunch and the casino was doing a pretty good impression of being closed.

I have never seen the rooms at either property but for craps the Golden Gate is the best choice. They have always had lively dealers and the pit seems to pull in fresh players from Fremont street. The management used to walk around the tables handing out free shrimp cocktail coupons from time to time.

Believe me I'm not a fan of the Plaza, but GG rooms are so small...

My vote - stay at the Plaza, play at Golden Gate. You'll accumulate free play and meal credits with your play. Skip the room, the bathrooms don't have enough room to fart. From past experience, credits are posted to your account the day following your play so check at the Club 1906 booth the next day to see what's available to you.

Golden Gate host Steve Pedroza 702-777-6937. Nice guy to deal with.

Here's another pic of the GG room. That's a double bed not a King and I'm backed against the headwall.

Stay at the Plaza. There's several casino's within easy walking distance.

can you expand on that? What kind of action do you give GG to always get comps?

As many have stated, the Plaza rooms are A LOT nicer! I always get a mini suite there and it is great! The GG casino is busier and really fun and I love their dealer/dancers! But I enjoy The Plaza for gambling too and they have a party pit in the back by the new bar. I would stay at The Plaza and gamble wherever the mood strikes you!

My MIL used to get comps of 200-300$ a visit plus free rooms. She only plays slots but probably drops at least a couple grand plus what she wins into the machines.

Are you firm about it being either Plaza or GG? I'd take that bankroll over to the Golden Nugget, which IMO offers the best rooms and gaming environment downtown. The Plaza has it's issues. GG can be completely dead during the day and very loud and crowded at night. I'd at least contact a GN host and see what they can offer to you and your group.

I wouldnt gamble or stay at the GN if they payed me to do both. Rude staff, bland food, machines hit for nothing and its really cramped. I usually walk through there to see the aquarium and maybe check out the pool, but thats as much time as I spend there these days. I am dead serious when I say I would rather gamble at the LVC than the GN any day of the week!
