I am going to Vegas in a week for a 3 night trip with some friends. We went to Vegas last year and stayed at NYNY. This trip we are staying at the Monte Carlo. I was wondering how the casino is at MC? We'll be playing craps/BJ mainly mixed with a little slot play. Are the restaurants/Big Belly Buffet any good? How about the minus5 lounge? It looks pretty cool but is it worth the money? Thanks for the help!

There is another post going on comparing MC and PH ( https://www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86597 ) ... there is alot of useful info in that thread.
Anyways for food options, I always liked Diablos Cantina. Its a younger crowd and always a good time. The last time i was there they were passing out 2 for 1 drink coupons right outside. The food is decent and portions are fairly large.... and the waitresses are smoking hot.... especially if you go in the summer.

The casino is pretty sterile. The minus 5 bar is a rip off, dont do it.

I have enjoyed staying at MC and have had decent luck in the casino, but I will admit it does not really have any "vibe". We would usually gamble there for a bit on our way back to the room at night or on our way out in the AM, but that is it.

I really like the Pub, great selection of beers, decent food, some decent HH specials.

I am not a buffet person at all, something about food on steam tables makes me feel ill, plus I don't eat nearly enough at one time to be worth the cost, so I can't help you there.

Diablo's is fun and they poured a pretty strong drink when I was there, but it was also expensive during non HH times.

Overall I think MC is a decent value for the $$ - great location, you can take a tram to Aria or Bellagio, comfortable rooms and good service, but you'll probably find yourself going other places for atmosphere.

BTW, we'll be there at the same time, so if we run into you please don't comment on the almighty ass whoopin' you put on my Longhorns this year, mmmkay?

What's isn't you like about the -5 bar. I have never gone there but saw it on a recent tv episode and it looked neat.

The buffet is fine. It is not one of the upscale ones, but it is priced so. Great soft serve ice cream.

I like the casino. It's laid out nicely. Very easy to navigate.

I agree that the casino is nice and easy to navigate. But the other post about it being sterile with no vibe is also spot on. Definitely not for the young hip crowd, but for us old timers it is very pleasant. Hope you enjoy your trip.:peace:

I agree with the last few posts. Its OK. From the casino to the buffy. If ya arent expecting to get your socks knocked off it will do just fine.

I've only been on the casino and I am not a fan of it at all. Reminds me of a retirement home. Also whatever smell they pump in there I can't stand it, gives me a raging headache. It's the only hotel on the strip that the smell bothers me.

It's not the bellagio, or aria and I never have and probably never will stay there, but I like it there. I don't smell any odor, and although I've only had the buffet once this spring, I enjoyed the food they served at it. I guess I prefer the simpler foods and don't want all fancy stuff the other places had. I actually never noticed that much difference. I'll check it out in January when I go back. I would have ate there last week but didn't want to go to the ballroom since the main buffet room is under remodeling . As far as the gaming atmosphere, it is definitely a younger crowd without the high rollers. Last January I had a good roll at the craps table and attracted the attention of some host there who tried to get me to stay there next trip. That type of action has never attracted any attention at the aria, bellagio, or mirage in the past.

I'll be going back to MC in March for my third stay there. Others are right...it's no Bellagio, but the buffet is a good value, great strip location and comfortable clean rooms. I'm treated well there and I'm thinking it may be my new home-casino.

I love the Monte Carlo for it's great location, nice rooms, luxurious feel, friendly service, great swimming pool, good food court with long opening hours (handy to get breakfast or night snack for back in the room), free tram service to City Center and Bellagio (and then further walk from there) and 24/7 Wallgreens + CVS around the corner (perfect to get cheap drinks & snacks for the room). And did I say great location?

Less impressed with the buffet (but for the price it's still good value) and resort fees (20$ p/n but includes an internet connection in the room which is a big plus). And the casino is not one I would visit when staying at another hotel, but I really enjoyed playing there at night when returning to the hotel, before going back to the room. Good atmosphere and lay-out, and very friendly personel/dealers, who will sure try to give you and your friends the best and exciting time (with sexy scarcely dressed ladies dancing on the tables, but that could be only in the weekends, not sure)!

I wouldn't want to hang around the casino of the hotel I'm staying at all the time anyway. MC is at a great location on the Strip, you can spend your day/night at other casinos and clubs and walk back to the hotel when you're done (or to fresh-up in between etc).

I hope you will really enjoy your stay!

I find it interesting when people say, "It's not the Bellagio."

Well, duh. It's not New York New York either! :evillaugh

I'm kidding. But the Bellagio reference is interesting because I have said before that The Monte Carlo is like the poor man's Bellagio. If you didn't know that they had moderate room rates, you would think it is a luxury resort. The check-in lobby is all marble and gold. Very fancy looking. The casino is very nice too, especially after the redo that they did about a year or so ago. Fancy steak place, fancy French place, all the amenities you want in a top notch place.

Oh, and to the original poster.......

    BOOMER!

(don't let my Austin location throw you off!)

The MC is a very nice and well run resort. The customer service is among the best on the strip. True the casino has a different vibe, but is refreshing to do your gaming where your ears aren't ringing from the blaring music or incessant chatter of 20-something's........IMHO. Love the MC and I will keep going back.:peace:

I really like the casino there. My friend makes fun of me saying I should just gamble in an old folks home, but I find the atmosphere there very laid back and friendly.

I'm mainly a blackjack player, and you can always find tables with standard MGM rules (H17, 3:2, DAS, RSA, surrender) at decent minimums. Good luck finding those at a Total Rewards casino. Bleh.

Also, this is one of the few casinos left on the strip with Caribbean Stud, which is my carnival game of choice!

Ooh, this is good to know! I played CS for about 4 hours at Harrah's in New Orleans back in May and had a ball. When I went to Vegas in July I looked all over for it and could not find it anywhere. I'll have to swing through MC next week.

Yes, MC and the Venetian are the only places I've found it on the strip recently. About a year ago it was also at Ballys and the Bellagio, but those tables are gone now.

MC will have $5 minimums during the day and $10 at night. The Venetian will always either be $10-$15.
