palace buffet is better than PH for weekday breakfast

Can the $4.99 Palace buffet really be better than the $18.99 spread at PH?
Yes. Crazy you say?
Not really.
I did both last week and easily give the nod to Palace.
For starters, Palace had more than breakfast items. There were numerous salads, soups, desserts, a carving station and ethnic lunch-type stuff. There was more than enough for breakfast, including a solid omelet station, freshly-made pancakes, several types of eggs, bread products, excellent bacon, etc.
Later in the week, a much-anticipated visit was made to PH for breakfast. I had been there for lunch several times and been quite pleased.
Well, breakfast was simply that - breakfast and nothing more. And, other than smoothies and a tri-tip roast, there wasn't anything special about it. Even the crepes were pre-made and rewarmed with canned filling.
This is a big buffet, but I could not find any sort of vegetable, soup or anything close to what Palace had.
And, the breakfast stuff at PH wasn't any better than Palace. In fact, I've give a slight edge to Palace for the basics, like eggs, pancakes, potatoes and breakfast meats.
Other than the fact the entire group of Miss Universe contestants was eating at the PH the same time we were, the breakfast experience was a letdown compared to anothe buffet at roughly 25 percent of the cost.

 

Proof that price is NOT always indicative of quality.

Another example: With player's card we had buffet lunch at the Palms for $7.99. It was outstanding. Very delicious!

 

We also ate the Palms for the $7.99 lunch, which I think is the best value for any buffet in Vegas.

 

Some of the expensive buffets are overrated and the value priced ones are underrated.

 

Ha.. Vegetables so overrated sign me up for PH the if they have no vegetables.

 

I know breakfast buffets are not obligated to have vegetables or soups, but for my eating habits, I appreciate any place that does.
Overall, all Stations buffets do a good job making breakfast more than just breakfast.
For example, Boulder Station is another $4.99er and it also kicks PH's ass.

 

I've also read from a poster on this board that PH has 100 pancakes at a time sitting out getting hard while the Fremont (another bargain) actually makes pancakes to order.

 

Haven't eaten at the Palace, but certainly agree that breakfast in the Spice Market Buffet is nowhere near worth the price. It's not disgusting or inedible, it's just so blah. Would never believe people rate the buffet in the top five in Vegas (although not sure if anyone does anymore anyway).

 

I hate to disagree with the resident buffetologist, but the Palace, in my opinion, sucks. Have eaten the breakfast buffet three times over the past 5 or so years. Price is excellent, but each time I leave I think that it would have been worth a couple extra bucks to just eaten at the cafe or a local diner. Never had PH for breakfast but don't see the point of ever doing that.

 

Before its refurbishment a year or two ago, I agree with you aliasyoshi, the Palace buffet did suck.
Since then, it's stepped up its game; and while the venue isn't the greatest to dine in, a person can get an adequate meal.
Getting back to the topic of breakfast - it does not lend itself well to buffet-style, no matter what buffet it is. Breakfast doesn't hold up well in heat, especially eggs dishes and cooked bread products (pancakes, french toast, etc).
Indeed, we are often better served by sitting down at a diner to get our grub.
When I was at the Palace, I opted for more of the buffet-friendly foods, such as soups and salads and a made to order omelet.
And, while PH had pancakes of various types and even some fruit filled, the generic ones I sampled at Palace were better tasting and fresher.
Even the fresh fruit at Palace was on par with PH.

 

I am eating the same. Thanks for that review. I love Spice Market for lunch, now I won't be temptedfor breakfast. Stations are really cheap right now and a great bargain.

 

Since last year I have eaten breakfast several times at the Palace Station. It’s really a bargain for $4.99 (with players card) but it’s not nearly as good as some of the other Station Casinos such as Boulder Station. Most of the times I wind up at Palace Station, it’s because it’s close, convenient and I just don’t feel like doing the longer drive out to Boulder Station. For a couple dollars more, the Orleans also serves a very good breakfast buffet. With places like these, I see no reason at all to pay any more than $10 for a buffet breakfast unless it is something unusually special.

 

Though we rarely eat at buffets these days, I would argue that "convenience" would be the #1 thing you're paying for if you end up at a Strip buffet. Of course it would be fabulous if you got a bargain - good food & selection for a good price - but that's not always the case. And you also have to compare what a "basic" breakfast with coffee, juice, egg & bacon etc will set you back at the same Strip hotel coffee shop - lots of times that $20 breakfast buffet is a bargain and a good value.

(in Vegas, we often eat just 2 meals - breakfast and dinner - because breakfast is my husband's favorite meal and he wants something substantial - so we're never going to be "pastry & coffee" for breakfast people.....)

ETA we ate at Palace Station a few years ago (2008 or 2009?) and found it acceptable esp for the price. Guess it's even better now!
