Thanks, I was going to post the same story. A bit creepy as I spend a GREAT deal of my time in hotel rooms on travel (and that door lock style looks like pretty much 80% of the doors).

Yikes! Like you, it won't scare me from traveling, but they made it look awful easy.

Yes, they pretty much all look the same, but this is a particular manufacturer. Onity. We use Ving by Elsafe, and they look exactly the same, but work differently. At least they better, haha. I will check them tonight, for sure.

I saw that, too. And considering I'm going solo to Vegas tonight, it kinda freaked me out. But I've never had problems in Vegas, so hopefully those aren't the locks used at MGM properties?!

Now that it is basically public knowledge you can bet the next major incident will result in a lawsuit unless the hotels take immediate action.

Actually I feel just as unsafe with the hotel staff using their pass cards to get into your room. I still think that there are probably a lot of thefts from the hotel workers as there are from outside thieves.

When I'm not in my room I always lock up any valuables I have (cameras, laptop, chips, etc.). Better safe than sorry.

When I'm in my room I have this gadget, I think it was from a company called Quorum over 15 years ago. I hook it to the door. it is a motion sensitive thing so if the door handle vibrates (caused when you open the door) a loud squealing noise will go off, hopefully scaring off the intruder. It has gone off only once, someone tried my door handle at 4 in the morning and it went off with a loud squeal. probably scared off the guy but he probably just tried the wrong room anyway. I think at the luggage store there are similar gadgets that are deterrents while you are sleeping.

A couple chairs in front of the door...maybe even tie a bell on the door!

Good idea sco5123. Also, place a couple of chairs inside the room against the door.

I am seeing a lot of small portable safes hit the market, too. Some would be suitable for travel. You probably couldn't keep everything in there but at least cash and jewelry and maybe a smaller camera would fit.

If the safe is portable the thief is likely to just take it with them. I think this is just one more good reason to rent a car. If you don't have a safe you can lock your valuables in the trunk of the rental. It's not foolproof, but if you are parked in a garage or lot with security cameras and noone knows that you have valuables in the car you will probably be okay.

What about tying a bell to a cow in front of your door, and then using a portable bicycle chain to tie that cow to a chair in front of the door?

    Security + fresh milk

in Vegas, you could add another layer of security by putting a pregnant hooker with a bowl of dry cereal outside your door. If you hear a crunch....SHOOT!

I just got one. It has a cord like a laptop lock that could used to secure it to something so it wouldn't be so easy to take. It could also be hidden in luggage. If these are mostly smash and grab thieves, they are mostly going to take what they see out and not be prepared to cut cables and other locks to get stuff out of a room. And if you were going to keep valuables in a car, this would be good idea for that.

Put gum or something sticky in the hole they are using to break in.
