Kingman, AZ is the closest Amtrak station...you arrive in Kingman, AZ and take a 3hr 20min bus ride to Las Vegas.

Sadly no! They have been talking for years about building tracks from LA to Las Vegas but hasn't happened yet.

There are tracks that run from LA to Vegas, there just is not service by Amtrak anymore. Took Amtrak to Denver from So Cal in the 90's, and we definitely stopped in Vegas. The talk for over a decade has been for high speed rail between So Cal and Vegas.

May 1997 is when they discontinued Amtrak service. As posted, Kingman is now the closest. My boss hated to fly, so he would take Amtrak to Kingman, rent a car and drive to Vegas.

Not sure what 3:20 bus ride Blackjacknut is referring to :confused2: because Kingman is only 100 miles from Vegas.

I was curious as to why Amtrak was posting long travel times from Kingman, AZ to Las Vegas so I looked up the Greyhound bus schedule and they are showing 2:55 travel time.

The new "X Train" is supposed to be operational by the end of 2013. 4 1/2 hours from Fullerton (Orange County) to Downtown Vegas. Will lay some new tracks as well as use some of the old tracks. It's not high speed rail, but it is supposed to be more of a "party train"

We'll see, but I'm highly skeptical of it succeeding. $99 each way is what they are currently setting as the price. That seems reasonable for one person, but how many couples are going to look at a $396 RT fare and say we could fly or dry a lot cheaper.

You arrive downtown at the Plaza, then what if you're not staying DT? Cab or bus.

You SoCal residents have a reputation when it comes to needing your cars.:evillaugh

IMO, it has monorail written all over it, but I hope I'm wrong.

For the life of me I can't figure out why Amtrak doesn't have service to Vegas. Seems to me a lot of budget conscious people would like to take the train. I've been reading about the high speed rail project for years and I am highly skeptical. Especially with the budget woes of Cali......we'll see I guess.
