Lee, what visa are you planning to get, my understanding is that it is extremely difficult for UK citizens to get work visas. You need to have specialist skills that US residents don't have, to even have half a chance.

Well. I have heard that does happen in Vegas.

But even then you will not be able to receive a work visa.
It's a lot harder from the UK than most other countries.

there are four main ways for a UK citizens to get to live and work in the USA.

    1) marry an american citizen. you'll have to prove that you aren't just doing it to get to america - so you have to prove a negative.. not easy.

    2) invest a million dollars in a business that will employ at least 10 employees - that gets you an investor visa (the restrictions are not so stringent if you are ivesting in certain areas that have been designated as needing investment - still at least 500K though

    3) work for a company that has locations in the UK and the USA - then you can get an intercompany visa - still lots of tests to pass for this.

    4) get a job in a specialist area that will employ you. They have to prove that no US citizen or green card holder can do the job or is as qualified as you. It can still take a couple of years to obtain a visa and even then its only for 3 years. you get one renewal and then you are out unless you apply for a green card at which point the company has to readvertise your position for citizens (oh and you can't change jobs or employers in this time). It'll cost a small fortune, you are answerable to immigration, you don't get benefits and if you lose your job you have to go back to the UK. easy huh

did I mention that it costs a lot of money?

I did option 4... 2 visa's, one green card and citizenship. for 5 of us. I believe that the total costs ended up north of $30,000.

    theres a lot involved.

    good luck.

Can you just move to the USA if you are retired and can buy a property? Totally different question, but we could do that one.

I believe that there is a visa that allows you to spend 6 months per year in the usa - and not a day more!!

anyone can buy property in the USA.

so as long as you like travelling then you can spend time in the USA too. given the price of the housing market it might be a good time - but then you are stuck in one area.

buy an RV and travel around - you could park it at Circus Circus!! I've seen a few blogs of brits doing the 6 months in an rv - you can always head down to mexico for the winter - plenty of people do that.

(NOT a lawyer of any type - this is just some of the information I've seen over the years of looking into immigration and what is possible to do and what isn't. rules and laws can change at any time)

Leaving the UK to get a job in a casino? Forget it. Unless you're thinking of buying the casino you have no chance of being granted a visa in your circumstances.

We've been Vegas (and the Southwest area) visiting for years and own a house in town but we aren't allowed to live permanently even though all we do is spend money. US residency ain't at all easy!

Pretty much close to this. I was sponsored through work years ago. Things have tighten up alot lately and will continue to do so.

If it were that easy everyone would be doing it. For a 6 month tourist visa you will need to prove that you have the funds to support yourself throughout your whole trip.

2 organizations not to F with in the US. The IRS and ICE. In that order.
