    My Trip Report

My mom and I make a yearly pilgrimage to Sin City but this year would be different. My sister, Kristen, would be experiencing Vegas for the first time. We all eagerly awaited this trip. We coached her on wardrobe and most importantly, how to make your play money last for the entire four days.

We finally met up after my United flight from Houston was delayed repeatedly, found my suitcase, and proceeded to meet at National as we were in different terminals. Note to self, American and United will not have the same baggage carousel. Got a great upgraded car with almost enough room and headed out. You see, I knew, but they didn't, that our other sister, the 5'12” redheaded one was arriving the next morning. She wasn't invited, as she had already been to Vegas twice this year, and this was to be my time with Kristen, but she loves to have fun, and didn't want to miss the party, so she let me in on the secret. She kinda had to as she didn't want us to give away our fourth Mac King ticket. Oops,I digress...

Anyway, Kristen is gawking at the strip as I drive like any other Houston driver, offensively. We finally arrive at Caesar’s Palace and she is just open mouthed at all the interesting characters buzzing around. We proceed with our luggage to the Diamond Check In desk as we don't want to have to wait on bellman because we're starving. My mom, who has actually slept at Caesars, raves about the Octavius tower, so we ask for it, two beds, and a roll away, and they actually say yes! $10 to you...

After a long hike, we ooh and aah over the room, drop our bags, lower the AC, and hoof it to Mom's favorite place, Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill. We end up with her favorite waiter, who remembers her from her two earlier trips this year and he sets us up. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the food. After eating at a Mesa Grill at Atlantis this summer, I wasn't expecting much. Maybe it was because of the awful service we'd had there? Or maybe the food isn't exactly up to Flay's standards as everything has to be imported? Anyway, don't remember what I had but it was good.

We really wanted to see Big Elvis this trip as we missed him last time. He has moved to Harrah's, so we walked across the street and caught the last 15 minutes of his performance. I guess we messed up on the times. He was wonderful, as always, but he didn't look very healthy this time. I hope he's ok...
My mom is like the biggest Elvis fan EVER and she just loved hearing Big Elvis again. A nicer man doesn't walk this earth. Humble, kind, and beautiful to listen to. While we were there, we decided to play a bit, so I had taught Kristen our method of budgeting. She had her 'Friday' envelope, broke a hundred into twenties, and we proceeded to teach her how to play all lines on the penny machines, but to only play one or two per line. We also told her that nickel machines were the kiss of death and she'd be better off playing dollars so bless her, I don't think she ever sat down at a nickel machine.

I went off to find some favorites and found a lonely little Top Dollar in the corner, which on the second spin, gave me the bonus! First offer...$35. Try again. Second offer...$1000!!! Holy crap I am starting out a winner! Yea!!! Took a picture with my new phone, which I would try not to have stolen this trip, and if I can figure out how to post pictures, I will. Played another spin to get it off the top dollar symbol, and cashed out. Found the rest, we all cheered, and wasted away the afternoon, catching another Big Elvis show, donating a bit, and finally, pooped, headed back to Caesars.

We had 7pm reservations at Ferraros, an Italian restaurant on Paradise. A goal this trip was to try new restaurants. We have those we love, and have to force ourselves to branch out so after reading reviews on here, I ordered a Restaurant.com GC for Ferraros. I thought I was ordering a $50 one but actually got a $100 off a $200 dinner. You guys assured me that with three people, that would be no problem, so we dolled up, got the car from the Octavius Valet (thanks VMB members for that tip!!), and proceeded to get lost. Ok, how do you get lost going from Flamingo to Paradise? All I can say in my defense, was that the Chocolate Martinis were REALLY good and that 2 of them are TOO many when trying to navigate Vegas in the dark. We FINALLY got there, after asking Siri, trying to read my new smart phone directions (have only had dumb phones up until now) and consulting the map that came with the rental car. That's the last time we take directions from that particular valet guy...

    Ok, more tomorrow

Ok, sorry for the delay, wanted to find my receipts so I could tell you what we enjoyed eating. We'd made reservations at Ferraros the previous week, thank goodness. It is in a strip mall and it is obviously a local's favorite. A charming man greeted us and escorted us to our table. I never figured out if he was part of the family or not, but this business has been in the same family for many years. My mom and I love good red Italian wines and my sister prefers sweet wines, like white zinfandel, so we basically disregarded her opinion...sorry Sissy! The wine list was over 100 pages and it was a challenge to find a wine we liked that was only in double digits. We love Brunellos or Super Tuscans, but of course, in the US, those are waaay out of our price range, so we settled on a bottle of VignmggioGherard (their abbreviation on the bill) for $66 and it was pretty good! We all like the same kinds of food, so we just ordered some appetizers, a starch, a fish, and a pasta and all shared. We had a wonderful scallop appetizer and a cappucina (whatever that was, sorry), then a risotto that had lobster and scallops and was the most divine risotto I think I've ever tasted. We then had a pasta dish with seafood that was wonderful, and a fabulous sea bass that had a great sear on one side. I knew this group, and a 6:30 dinner (remember, first day and Texas time) and I ordered an order of their cookies to go. They were GREAT after midnight, for the next several nights. I highly recommend them! Our server, Eric, was also from Italy, Venice, I believe, and while he was wonderful and very attentive, at one point he kissed my mom! On the mouth! Now I've been to Italy, but I don't recall that being a custom...She was pretty horrified but boy, was it funny! Balance after the $100 GC was removed, but with the 18% gratuity was $135. What a bargain for a wonderful dinner. Going back here in November when I take my girlfriend trip.

    The Saga continues...

We went back to Caesars (easy when you know the way!) and put the car away for the night. My feet were hurting so I wanted to change out of heels and volunteered to run everyone's jackets upstairs, plus we didn't want to leave our cookies in the casino, so I headed on the long trek to the room. All was well but my key wouldn't work. I asked a maid to let me in but she told me to use the phone near the elevators. After calling for security, I sat down on the thoughtfully provided bench to wait. People came, people went, no security. I did meet a very interesting man from Santa Barbara who had the same back surgery I'd had (plus about a dozen more) and I tried to sell him on the merits of bootcamp for keeping sciatic pain away. After that stimulating conversation, I once again called down. After over an hour, security arrived, asked for ID and let me in the room. Think of the money I saved because my feet hurt! Woohoo! Too tired to play. In the bed before midnight, Vegas time. The roll away had been delivered and my sister said it was VERY comfortable! My last conscious thought before I drifted off was where was my baby sister (the very tall redhead) going to sleep? Her words were “I don't care if I have to sleep on the floor, I'm just glad to join you!”. I KNOW she didn't mean that...

Next morning, we all awoke, rested, and ready to head to Mom's favorite Caesars spot for breakfast, Serendipity. We arrive to a huge crowd waiting for a table, and the hostess told us it would be a 30 minute wait and I asked the magic question: “Does being a diamond member get us a table sooner?”. After verifying that we were both diamond, she promptly grabs a VIP stand and whisks us away to a window table. Boy were the other people irritated! I really don't like showing off, but it's great to know that all those dollars donated to Caesars Entertainment are worth something. As I'd already had a Spark in the room (my energy drink I go no where without), they ordered pretty coffee drinks, and Mom had a BLT and I ordered a fruit platter. I don't know if Serendipity is owned by the Cheesecake and Grand Luxe people, but those portions are HUGE! My meal included fresh pineapple, blueberries, blackberries, some odd but tasty unknown fruit, and strawberries, and it also had a half a coconut, filled with yogurt with great granola spilling out of it. I highly recommend it and at $14, it was plenty big to split. My sister, who is a brunette, and 5'11” doesn't usually eat breakfast, although we warned her we would be going non-stop, just sipped her coffee and wished she could go outside and smoke. I'm the shortest at 5'10” and blonde, and being the only one who knew my sister had landed, was in the cab line, and headed to Caesars, ate my breakfast at a turtle's pace. I probably took 30-40 minutes once my food arrived, and while I know they were wishing I'd hurry, no one said anything. I regularly got texts from Parrish, in cab, dropping off the other person at another hotel, waiting at lights on LV Boulevard. I couldn't stall any longer, so I asked for a to-go box and packaged up my remaining fruit. We had an extra fridge upstairs (which they provided at no charge) and it would taste good, once I got hungry again. Plus, it gave me the excuse to run upstairs and drop it off while we allowed Parrish the time to get there. They were waiting for the car to be brought around when my sister, seeing them ahead, asked a total stranger to video her arrival. No he didn't run off with her phone, however, it videoed his response to the reunion by accident for the first segment. No YouTube, yea!! They were stunned, there was much excitement, then we had to run her suitcase to the room and finally, we're in the car and on the way.

Kristen requested only a few things for her first Vegas experience: A magic show, riding a thrill ride, and Circus Circus. Yep, you read that right, we had to go to Circus Circus! The things you do for those you love...We arrived via back roads and after a hellish valet parking experience, we went to watch the big top. We really tried to talk her out of going there, I told her the casino smelled like urine, to which she responded that she worked in a nursing home and she'd feel right at home...
I'm happy to report, that in the 9 years since I first (and last) visited there, it didn't smell bad at all anymore. They had a great selection of games, the circus act we saw was great (a guy and a girl doing a bunch of balancing stuff), and we had fun. After that, we went to knock out the second thing on her list, the thrill ride. Thank goodness we were able to persuade her to ride the coaster at NYNY instead of the Stratosphere (my other least favorite Vegas hotel). I went up to the line with her, found out where it dumps you out (the gift shop), held her phone, purse, etc. and headed to wait for her. Of course, while in the gift shop, I had to buy her a souvenir, a nyny skyline shot glass. I waited, and waited, and waited some more. After about 45 minutes, I was getting really concerned and kept calling Mom and Parrish, who were downstairs, supporting the local economy. They weren't worried, but I knew I'd already seen people who came after her. Finally, after an hour, they called and said that she'd been off for awhile, couldn't find anyone, panicked, and no one would let her borrow their phone to find us. By the time I got to her, she was sobbing and really freaked out. Yes, she's a bit of a drama queen, but there were more people in that casino than her entire town, she had no phone, Mom didn't answer when she finally got to borrow one, she had no money, and she was five minutes away from walking back to Caesars.

Editing this to add that not only was poor Kristen starving, but I had her cigarettes!! No wonder she was a mess!!

We split some of the fried clams and settled her down. Gosh, I never get to eat fried food and it tasted GREAT! We happily bid adieu to NYNY and headed back to Caesars. We had plans to meet my cousin at Firefly on Paradise about 7pm so we just enjoyed playing downstairs, taking a jacuzzi bath (with an audience, unfortunately), and I began the task of trying to get another roll-away. I put the first one in the bathroom, and stopped by on the way up to request it, as well as more towels and toiletries. We had quite a crowd now and you know how girls are...

Still no roll-away by the time we had to leave, but I knew they would probably take care of it after we left, so I left one tip for that, another for the turndown service. It is GREAT there. Met him at Firefly, he already had a table for us, and we had a blast. More tomorrow, I promise...

At Firefly, we enjoyed a pitcher of their red sangria $28, their apple manchango salad (or something like that, going from a receipt) that had green apples thinly sliced, excellent cheese, and I believe some toasted sliced almonds in a light dressing $4. We also ordered four orders of their bacon wrapped dates stuffed with bleu cheese as we didn't want to fight over them at $4.50 each. I have to give Parrish kudos for sticking with her special diet for the most part during the entire trip, so she had a great looking salad with grilled shrimp added $19. I'm including prices because when I read a trip report about a restaurant I've not been to, I like an idea of prices. We also had a 'filler' dish of the Firefly Fries $5.50 which are thin fries with garlic and parmesan all over them. Then came the fried calamari $7.50, the Ahi Tuna Skewers and Steak Skewers, at $9.50 and $8.50 and of the two, I thought the steak ones had more flavor. The tuna needed more seasoning, imho. They brought out a complimentary dessert for our cousin's birthday and he blushed several shades, it was so cute. BTW, he is sooo much fun, tall, handsome and single in his late thirties I think...We loved getting to know him as an adult. We also had their Caramel Flan $4 and their YUMMY bread pudding $5.50. Total was an awesome $118. This is a locals favorite we discovered several years ago, just as our beloved Cafe Baba Reeba went out of business.

We had decided to go Downtown together as this was on our list of things that Kristen HAD to experience as a first timer. She rode with him and they apparently didn't try to take back roads as they arrived and actually found a parking space! We ended up many blocks away and felt fortunate to find that spot. There was a motorcycle rally of some sort going on and bikes were EVERYWHERE! Beautiful bikes, tricked out bikes, bikes that looked comfortable enough to sleep on...I'm not a rider myself, but I loved looking at all of them. I've never been to Sturgis, but saw at least 10 of those shirts on people as I believe it was just a month or two ago??

Downtown was hopping! There were super heroes everywhere, in addition to Spongebob and a ton of other cartoon characters, many showgirls, people in bizarre body paint, street entertainers, a male cupid who desperately needed more pins in his 'diaper' so his cheeks didn't grossly hang out, and Tonto, who was tan, nicely muscled, and had a beautiful set of glute muscles...Really wishing I could post pics!!

We made our way through the crowd enjoying the Def Leppard imitators on stage (this drummer had both arms) singing all the Pyromania tracks. It brought back great memories of Freshman year at Baylor, going to that concert in Austin instead of studying for my finals...Oops, Mom might read this!
Anyway, we were trying to get to the line for the zipline over Freemont Street as both my sisters wanted to do it, even though Parrish was in a skirt. The line was ridiculous at 11pm so we just enjoyed people watching, dancing in the streets, and especially the light shows. My favorite was the Queen medley when the sisters put our arms around each other and dramatically swayed like drunk people to the beat. We were completely sober, it was just one of those special memories that will always stay with me.

We went to the casino that was our favorite for many years, the Vegas Club. Back when we hung out there, the cocktail waitresses had to wear those horrible blue and yellow wool cheerleader sweaters. Our friend, Diane, was already off, but I left a note (and gift) for her with a co-worker and we played a bit. Mom got a man kicked out of there for getting to cozy with Kristen, too funny! Once a mom, always a mom!! I hit for $600 on a quarter machine. WOF maybe? That was fun! We never got drink service and ended up paying $2 a bottle for water from the bar on the way out because we were dying.

We told our cousin goodbye and Parrish and I hoofed it to the parking garage with a promise to pick them up in the circle drive in front of the Plaza. This way Kristen could smoke and Mom could sit. She had a total knee replacement in March and is a great sport, but she can only walk so far.

More in a bit, fingers are cramping!

After an easy exit from the garage we swung through and picked them up, got on the freeway this time, and easily made it back to Caesars. Oh yeah, on the way Downtown, I called Caesars (which isn't easy!) to make sure they delivered the roll away. They assured me it was noted and it had been done. So, we all went upstairs to check on things. Only the one in the bathroom and no turn down! What a disappointment! So Mom called downstairs, sounded a little miffed, and told them this was her third call and that she had a child who needed to go to bed and could they please deliver the bed! Kristen and I were trying not to laugh loudly enough for the person on the phone to hear, but really, three daughters in their 40s and to her we're still children...
Kristen and I went down to play, had great fun trying all the new machines, and donated all over Caesars. I don't remember when we went up but we were many dollars poorer, but had a blast so that's all that matters. I view my bankroll as my entertainment budget and I carefully break it up by days, so once I've played with Saturday's envelope, it goes back into the safe, then back home, and isn't touched until my next trip. The exception to this is the $7500 I won at Atlantis this summer on WOF. I offered that to my husband to either; purchase lighting for the front yard, take some couple trips with, or put toward tuition for the 3 in college.

When we opened the door to our room, everything was pitch black, so after turning on a bathroom light, lo and behold, we had TWO roll-aways! Thank goodness the room was big enough and there was still plenty of room to maneuver. Kristen did drop her curling wand and it made a little thunk which made Mom sit up, mutter a curse, and shush us. We couldn't stop giggling. Guess you had to be there...

The next morning was moving day. Everyone took so long to get ready that I ate my leftover fruit so I didn't want to do a long, sit-down breakfast, Kristen, who didn't completely learn her lesson the day before still didn't want to eat, and Parrish needed to find certain foods. So we scouted out the slim pickings and I think Parrish found an apple and Mom ended up with a chocolate croissant. Now that's a vacation breakfast!
More tomorrow, and someday I'll finish this. We were there 8 days!:rolleyes2:

Still to come, 2 spa visits and Sex and the City wins!

Thanks guys for the encouragement, I promise to get more down today. LOL about the 'pooped' comment! While I didn't mean it that way, sometimes the stomach gets a bit unhappy during a vacation so yes, what a relief. :Þ

    Thanks Evoni!
Ok, you are motivating me to finish this crazy thing! In the last 3 days we've had two deaths and a cancer diagnosis amongst friends so I'm having a hard time getting back into Vegas mode, but if I don't finish this soon, I will blur it with the next trip so I promise, I'll start cranking it out again...
    Thanks for the gentle nudge...

Liz, greetings to you from Houston! Yes, it's getting cold here. I just got back home from Vegas this early morning (wee hour)! Yesterday's 5:40 PM departure flight got delayed so much. It finally took off around 7:45 PM and landed at Hobby about 12:15 AM this morning.

Let's PM each other. GO Texans!!

    Ok, more report

Oops, forgot to add the Mac King show! On Saturday, we had the privilege of finally seeing Mac King's show. So many plans to go to this over the last several years and finally get to. I tipped the lady $20 and told her we had a Vegas virgin and wanted good seats. She warned us that we might get pulled onstage as we were in the first three rows and those are the ones he picks from. The redhead always gets picked at shows but this time, Kristen, the V.V. Was the lucky victim. I don't want to spoil any surprises, lets just say it involved a card trick, a cookie, the zipper of his pants, and a guinea pig! Kristen was a great sport, but has her limits, and they didn't include his zipper...
We thoroughly enjoyed the show, he was funny, good at magic, down to earth, and it was a clean show, even with the zipper... ;-)

    Back to the Trip Report:
I think we left Mom playing downstairs while we set out on foot to show Kristen some of our favorite things nearby. BTW, no problem with a late check out. Does 2 pm work for you Mrs. H? Why yes, that would be very nice, thank you.

Taking that little side exit out the Augustus/Octavius, whatever it is valet area saves a lot of time when trying to walk the strip. We first walked over to Bellagio and all admired the ceiling, admired the Conservatory, and I can't recall if we played there. I don't think so because I think everyone was saving their money for later so they could make their donations at V/P. We tried to see one of the water shows but there were frog men in the lake so it looked doubtful...On to Cosmopolitan. I LOVE this place! I love the vibe, the beauty (although a bit over the top), the energy, the youthfulness! Come on, in our minds we're still hot 20 yr. olds, right? I especially grew to love playing here, but more on that later...

We showed her the cool glass columns when we you first enter reception. This time, it looked like you were standing outside someone's shower with a very skinny naked girl inside. Talk about doing a double take! People were whip-lashing all over the place, hysterical! We then speculated about which of our husbands would have been willing to pose for this scene. I won't tell you which wife said yes, but it had us all busting up! We are married to: A cowboy with a heart of gold, a surgeon with a great sense of humor, and a technology guru who is a great chef. It was one of those... :)

Anyway, much to my dismay, no one wanted to stay and drink or play, so we moseyed on back the way we came. Yea! A fountain show! It was the Bocelli/Sarah Brightman “Time to Say Goodbye”. My most favorite!!! What a treat!

Back to Caesars, almost time to leave, so I go by the host office. Now mind you, I didn't have a host there, and with this being the first time I have actually slept there, I figured they would take some off as I'd donated a good amount over the last 3 days. Finally, a gentleman gave me his attention, pulled stuff up on the computer, and said “You're all covered, with the exception of the tips. What they didn't tell me was that they used my express comps or that I had over 1,000 express comps used for mini bar stuff which I NEVER touch! Everyone knew not to even move things! Still ticks me off thinking about it. I mentioned that I would be checking back in three days later and he never said, great, thanks, my name is … or Kiss my grits. Nada. And they wonder why Caesar's hosts have such a horrible reputation. I LOVE when Caesars sends me the VIP survey...hehehe

Anyway, we get the car one last time, tell the staff goodbye and we'll see them soon, and we're off to Palazzo! On the way we spot an IN AND OUT BURGER. As I was the only one who had eaten at one of these, I enthusiastically suggested we try this yummy and budget friendly Vegas landmark. Ok, I know they're elsewhere, but I haven't seen any in Texas, so we now associate these with Vegas...

Palazzo (and previously, Venetian) has always been my home in Vegas. I had a host I LOVED (and she and I usually get together when I come to Vegas), now have a host I like ok, and am lucky to even get free rooms and a few hundred in freeplay since Mr. S.A. had the brilliant idea to cut comps, court conventions, and get in bed with Holiday Inn... Anyway, at Invited Guest check in, they told us the sad news that we were NOT allowed to have a roll away! But we're four ladies! Who don't like to sleep together! So she put us in a little bit of an upgraded room as it has a humungous 'V' shaped couch that seemed very comfortable (not so much so after they slept on them) and after several phone calls downstairs, we had extra sheets/pillows/blankets/toiletries/towels, and the window remote. We later found the original one in the sofa cushions but not for two days...

This was to be our last night together so we had special plans. Kristen (remember, this trip was for her :) LOVES a good steak, and while I realize there are ones that are more highly regarded on these boards, we really like Emeril's restaurant, 'Delmonico'. My friend, Stacey, grew up in a cattle ranching family and said their steaks were among the best she's ever tasted. (We go for our annual trip in 21 days!!) So we go downstairs to get Kristen a player's card and while they weren't having any great sign up incentives, the very nice man gave both of us a free tee shirt and I think he even gave her a cord for her card! Everyone claims to be out of them but 'you can get one in the gift shop'...

Anyway, we go to find favorite machines to play: Ooohhhh, looking for Davinci Diamonds (Hi Evoni!!), Invaders From the Planet Moolah (they have removed them from both casinos I think... :-(
Top Dollar, WOF, Wizard of Oz, Jaws, Clue, the new Michael Jackson and new Ghost Busters, certain Monopoly games, the original Gold Fish, Sex and the City (Yea!!!!), LOTR, and others I'm too tired to remember. So we have fun with all of us bouncing around the casino, and eventually, we all go up to start the grooming process for dinner at Delmonico's. We arrive (minus Parrish who's on a roll and doesn't want to leave her machine! Lol) and we look at the wine list...ok, let me interrupt here, I look at the wine list, I order for all of us, I also do it at Firefly, at Ferraros, it seems like I even order their breakfasts for them...ok, not really, but Mom doesn't always have her glasses handy, Kristen is just happy to be there, and Parrish is eating certain foods and we certainly don't want her ordering so I'm the default person...So we have a bottle of '09 Renacer Enamore $85. This was after consulting with the wine guy (can't spell the S. word) and trying a couple that weren't great. I realized once we got home that I forgot to leave a tip specifically for him. Sorry wine guy!!! And Kristen had a glass of Kunde merlot $11. Everyone was happy! We were served a wonderful amuse bouche. Can't remember what it was, but it had a little cup of soup with it and was delightful. We ordered ONE Bone-in Rib Eye (med. Rare) $52, some really good appetizer that was $17, sorry! Then a table side Caesar for two ($32), another salad that just looked really good $15, a side of Potatoes Gratin, Buttered Asparagus, and Baked Grits with Bacon and Vermont Cheddar. Our head waiter was Dale and she was a tiny little thing. She was outstanding! And one of the few female waiters at Delmonico. They worked well as a team, giving each table just the amount of attention they wanted, and service was seamless. I will request her when we go back in a few weeks... Total before tip was $278
Ok, I realize this is just Day 3 and I promise, the remaining days will be shorter!!!
