For those that fly out of DTW to Vegas:

What is considered a good price?

The most I've paid flying direct from DTW is about $360. The least I've paid is about $250. Thats with fees included, but I don't tend to have a lot of bags.

Usually with a little bit of shopping, you can find a flight for the low 300s. That's a rate I would consider "good enough". But the cheapest flights will be first thing in the morning or late at night, and cheapest returns will be morning or red-eye. If you want to fly out in the middle of the day that could easily add 100-150 to your cost.

Spirit and Delta are the main airlines with direct Vegas flights. Southwest now does (I think) one direct flight a day. Make sure you account for fees when comparing. Spirit charges for both checked bags and carry-ons. Delta charges for checked bags, but not carry-ons. Southwest doesn't charge for bags.

I find Delta prices pretty stable. Southwest has occasional seat sales.

I always flew Delta because they were one of the two airlines that have nonstops to Vegas from DTW (and I'm NOT gonna fly Spirit).

The cheapest I could usually find was about $300, but that doesn't include baggage fees.

I noticed recently that Southwest now has a daily nonstop flight to and from Vegas from DTW for as low as $220 roundtrip sometimes. I'll be switching to them for my next trip if those fares stay that low.

yeah, in the 300's. Of course for 300 the flight leaves at 6 am, or something.

Thanks. I can get on SW $347 RT. Both flights are NS. The flight out is the only bad thing - leaves late afternoon and doesnt get to LV until 5:40pm. The return flight leaves at a decent time.

The other thing is that DTW is about 2.5 hrs away from CLE. But the cheapest flight out of CLE on SW is $633. Guess I will have to stop at the new Hollywood Casino in Toledo on the way to DTW.

If you don't mind a quick stop in Denver. I usually can find a pretty good rate with Frontier. We've actually flown them the last 3 or 4 times. I always try to book far in advance so we've been able to fly for about $250 each with carry on bags.

I usually pay $300-375 direct through Delta. Closer to $300 on most flights.

DTW is Delta's 2nd biggest hub, so about 6 direct flights daily, no need for a layover for a 4hr flight. Easy parking at the Delta parking garage with an easy walk into the terminal. Not need for a shuttle- however, it is $25/daily for this convenience. If you haven't flown out of the MacNamara terminal, it is one of the easiest/best terminals in the world, IMO.

Plenty of cheaper, but safe hotels to stay near the airport if you driving from Cleveland.

I have mixed and matched flights to suit my needs - Frontier out one time and Delta return. One ways can be just as affordable.

I have used Delta, Frontier, Spirit and Southwest, factoring in price and schedule. All but Spirit were tolerable.... Spirit I must have exit row or big front seat and bag fees must be factored in. They are a last resort for me - I will avoid them if I can.

Frontier with the quick stop was fine although directs are preferred, but if the price doesnt work then the Denver stop was ok. I wouldnt go via Atlanta, Charlotte etc - I need to be heading in the right direction from the start.

Most I have paid is around $400 ish round trip. Least $180 (before Spirit had bag fees) Next trip for me has SW at $219 roundtrip and direct.

Thanks for all the replies. I booked on SW and will pay $347 RT. Pretty good considering I am flying back on Sunday. Also better than the $633 on from CLE with stops

I also booked for $219... My habits - shop often. For me on SW I have had good success just after they extend their schedule. Sign up for each airlines email list. Travel Tuesdays, Wednesday, sometimes Thursdays and Saturdays for the cheapest fares. And again, shop often - check daily, sometimes twice and when you see the price you think is fair or a deal, buy it. I dont think there is a true method to it, but this is what works for me.

Wow! Jealous. Hopefully mine drops that low. But I doubt it since it's the opening round of March Madness, spring break, and I'm coming back on a Sunday.

Looks like you booked about 5 weeks out from your trip. Have you been watching pricing everyday? How was it trending? Did it start out high like mine?

I'm about 5 MONTHS out from my trip. Since it's SW, I'll be looking pretty much everyday and rebooking if it goes down.

I've started doing research for my February trip and it looks like for my dates I can get about 285 return from Delta.

I may be able to top that flying Delta out and SW back ... looks like it would be about 220 or so.

I wasn't planning to book for awhile as plans aren't set in stone, but those deals are awfully tempting.

I usually fly Delta out of DTW but I see those $220 dollar fares for next spring on SW. Never flew them before. If both the wife and I are flying what are the odds that we get to sit together? Not sure how their seating works since you can't pick your seats beforehand? Please enlighten me. Thanks.

I'm not a SW expert, but the way it works is you check in for your flight, and based on when you do that they assign you a row and number. And those correspond to how soon they will let you on the plane.

As long as you do your check in online the day before the flight, it probably won't be that hard to get a good enough position to get two seats together.
