Well I am back from staying downtown for the first time in over 20 years. It sure has changed a lot from what I remember of it. We stayed at the Fremont for the 3 nights, Thursday to Sunday. I must say, while the room was small, it was very nice and clean. I was very well surprised. Not a big hotel, so the elevators are quick, and drop you off into the casino.

    A few things that I would like to point out about downtown;
-The Fremont rooms meet all expectations. Small but clean, and very nice maids. Said hello to us each morning as we exited the room.
-While the casino was older, it was clean, and had all the games you need.
-Good odds and great drink service
-Crap dealers were a lot of fun.
-They have to do something about the people outside wanting money to have their pictures taken. 99% of them look horrible. Saturday night there had to be at least 40 of them outside the fremont alone. Spongebob to Aliens to Pee Wee to Mr. T.
-The D's casino looks nice and American Coney is just as good as the one in Detroit.
-The Plaza casino didnt look that nice and was dead. Pizza joint was ok. Sports book was not part of the remodel and was a dump as well as the bar next to it.
-Golden Nugget was a nice clean casino.
-Las Vegas club was dirty and dead.
-Golden Gate was another nice surprise. Very nice inside, girl dancer-dealers were very nice. Very personable, good dealers, and good to look at.
-MSS and the Cal, both look the same, but clean and both had a good vibe.
-Binions was clean, but not very busy.

We did watch college football all day Saturday at the Golden Nugget. We got there around 8 AM and found a booth open and camped out there all day. They will give you drink coupons for every $100 bet. Thursday night we watched football at the Fremont, and they gave you 2 tickets for every $20 bet made, or a $6 Horse ticket.

Food. We ate the Golden Nugget buffet and it was not good. Just basic. Buffet at the Fremont was the same, very basic, not very good. American Coney at the D, awesome hotdogs. Chili, mustard and onions!! Yummy. Dunkin Donuts in the Fremont, great. Lanahi cafe at Fremont, chili and rice, great, and they have huge hot dogs. New buffet at Ceasars Palace was the most awesome buffet I have ever eaten. Ate there for lunch on Friday and holy cow did it rock.

Final thoughts. $2 Coronas and Heineken at Fremont was an awesome deal. Golden Gate is a must stop now. Plaza and Las Vegas Club, you dont have a chance. The D is nice but loud. Golden Nugget still the belle of downtown. Four Queens is just there. Dancing girls at the D, Golden Gate, and Las Vegas Club. The best were by far at the Golden Gate!!!

Happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay Downtown. I like staying Downtown and am looking forward to my Nov. trip.

I find the Fremont a very fun casino. All of your observations were spot on. As much as I like the Fremont I have yet to stay there. Maybe my next trip I'll book a few days there.

I'm also looking forward to checking out the D. I want to go upstairs and play the Sigma Derby and the old slots. Too bad it's loud. I don't really care for overly loud places.

Yes, the Plaza and the Vegas Club are really sad. Been that way for a while now, even though the Plaza went through a change-over. Glad to hear the Golden Gate is rockin. I will definitely check them out.

Anyway, thanks for your post on your downtown stay. Makes me more excited and can't wait to get there!

did nobody tell you to avoid the fremont buffett before you went? sorry about that.

looks like you have the same view on most of the casinos that I do - I haven't been to the remodelled D yet though. I like MSS and have come to appreciate the Cal.

Mermaids - no trip there? its the fastest drink service in town!!! only old slots to play though but if you are late to the party its a good place to catch your friends up in the drinking state!!!

    No El Cortez???
no drink and drag review?? :D

    not a thorough audit sir!

I've eaten at the Fremont buffet at least 5 times. The food is better than MSS.

I feel that the food at the fremont buffet is decent. It's edible...and it won't get you sick. The Food at MSS is about the same...but MSS has more variety. I think I like eating at the Fremont Buffet better because I wonder if I'm sitting in the booth that Mike and Trent from Swingers sat in.

Wait did I read that right? Cal and MSS the same inside? Did you sleepwalk through the MSS? I think its one of the more unique properties downtown. All the old woodwork, etc..

Aside from that I agree with your assessments. Though fremont buffet = bad. I'd stick with the MSS buffet.

With all due respect, I'll take the MSS buffet over the Fremont any day.

Glad you liked the fremont, I agree with your comments. Just sad about the Plaza, they just dont get it, refurbish the place and then do nothing to get people in the door, I play mostly BJ and walked right in and out, no reason to play there(at empty tables), if you can get better games/rules elsewhere.

    Downtown

We stayed at the Fremont for the first time in Sept. We really liked the hotel. Everyone was wonderful. Will probably stay there again.
We enjoy the Fremont Buffet for breakfast and we always eat the buffet when steak nite is Wed and Sat. Cheap and good food, especially steaks

The Cupid out front was a horrible sight.

Vegas club smelly and old. Just walked through to get to the Calif.

Couple of replys to items you great folks pointed out.
Did go to El Cortez. Looked plain and old, however the bathrooms seemed to be very recently updated. Very clean and polished. Nothing exciting.

I ment the Cal and MSS look the same from what I remembered. They are different inside, and I agree MSS does have some cool things in it. Why is the brew pub closed from 7 to 11 AM? Odd.

I did see Cupid the street performer. What an idiot. I cant believe the same people that were out there day after day. Tough way to make a buck but you gots to do what you gots to do.

Did go into Mermaids for a bit. Had a drink and played some old slots. Couldnt stand the smell after a while.

Sigma Derby at the D was a lot of fun. Had these old ladies rolling after 5 minutest of them sitting down. I was giving the horses names and pretty soon every one was shouting for Santa's Little Helper, Jimmy Bean, Taco, Oatsy, and the Blob. What a great time. Next time you play up there, do what I did, and give the horses a name. Soon all will be shouting.

Another comment. Why in the hell did the Plaza put up a big LED Screen in the middle of their tower and not have it working? Doesnt make any sense at all. Plaza lobby looked nice, everything was spread out, but it was dead and some places were not remoldeled and looked dumpy.

Thanks for sharing your trip report! You've given me the courage to try staying at the Fremont. It's on the short list of downtown hotels I've yet to try, but now I'm game.

Don't know what's up with the Plaza. Right after renovations, and seems very few are impressed. May bite the bullet and try a one-nighter there just so I can post a review.

Agree The D is a little too loud. Last visit (September), I noticed a few casinos downtown seemed to up the volume, including Golden Nugget and Golden Gate. I like loud music and a party atmosphere, but I also like to be able to have a conversation - and be able to talk to the dealers.

Give the Parlour Bar at El Cortez a shot sometime. Great music in the evenings, nice atmosphere, and excellent bartenders.
